The best!!!
- Pros: It consistently works and connects fast.
- Cons: It is twice as expensive s most of the other network wireless connectors. I don't care for the Netgear wireless connection wizard. It wouldn't such a nag if it would minimize after the connection is established but it doesn't and you have to manually minimize it yourself. However, it is a good setup tool. But that is as far as it goes.
- Other Thoughts: When you are purchasing a Netgear Wireless Adaptor make sure that it is the version 3 and not the version 2. Both of these look identical but the version 2 doesn't have all of the same features as in the version 3. The version 2 model changes the way the startup menu connect Icon looks and works.
Netgear Fail
- Pros: It works on occasion. And it's stylish, with this really neat blue light!
- Cons: Drops connection intermittently, apparently picky drivers, stark lack of actual support for this product.
- Other Thoughts: I've used this product off and on for as needed for a while. Unfortunately, I need it now. More recently I've had to connect a desktop to a wireless modem. Not ideal, but I can handle that with a good adapter.
The WG111v3 doesn't seem to think it can handle that.
The unit gets extremely hot and randomly drops my internet connection, even though other wireless users in my house claim no such similar drop. I did try a temporary wired setup that worked just fine, which means: it's the adapter.
I'm currently on Netgear's "latest and greatest" drivers, and so my conclusion is that they aren't actually all that great. I'm glad this hardware does actually work for some people, but it's clear that it has a long way to go.
Unfortunately, so far there's little in the way of actual support other than to sit back and wait for Netgear to fix something. In the meantime I'll be at the store browsing competitor's products. Netgear got my money once; good for them. Never again; good
A great usb Wireless adapter w/ 1 issue
- Pros: Bought it to extend the range of my netbook Wireless BGN, the blinky blue LED looks cool. Get at least 20% better signal. Quick performance. Works with Backtrack 4 software (for u network security types)
Utilizes Realtek Chipset. Upgraded performance from WG111V2. Works great with Vista and Windows 7
- Cons: THIS USB Adaptor uses alot of power and generates so much heat from the transmitter it may shut down like its predecessor the V2, but much rarer. I found the solution is to plug it in to a cheap small notebook or desktop USB hub (powered or unpowered). The cheapy gigaware, irock, or cyberpower hubs work great. if you attach it to hub it will bleed off the heat and keep your laptop/desktop and itself cooler. if u directly connect it to a laptop, prepare for that entire side to be toasty.
- Other Thoughts: I use this USB adaptor in 3 computers, an Asus 1005HA-P, and HP DV5, and a Gigabyte EP45-UD3R custom. THis adaptor works great in XP, Vista, and Windows 7. This USB adaptor is great for increasing your latop's range and is compatible with every router at home and at school. (linksys, cisco, netgear, trendnet, dlink etc) also have a WG111V2 which VISTA ABSOLUTELY HATES. Unfortunately, the heat problem is a necessary evil, beter range, = more power= more heat. Id rather take the heat and be able go connect with better speed at longer range and apartment complexes
