4 out of 5 eggsGreat Price

Pros: Works perfectly in Active - Passive mode when having a WAN outage.

Cons: DHCP functionality is limited to a small number of nodes.

Other Thoughts: We own 2 of them and they work just fine for what we do with them.

1 out of 5 eggsMakes a good paperweight

Pros: Nice blinking LED's. Makes a very attractive paperweight.

Cons: Bought this for dual wan port capability to separate VOIP from other traffic. SURPRISE! The latest firmware revision of the router removes the ability to disable SIP ALG, a requirement of our phone system, and a feature available on most routers. OK. The previous version of the firmware has the setting available. Downloaded the previous firmware version, and the update failed. Found a restore firmware utility for this router from Cisco, specifically for the case of an update fail. Our in house Cisco guy, who we hired away from Cisco, and who was in the group which wrote router firmware had never heard of such a utility. He guesses that firmware updates must fail a lot on this router. So, now the router does nothing, and there appears to be no way to fix it.

1 out of 5 eggsOne problem after another

Pros: Comes in a box.

Cons: Cannot log into the Management interface. Log-in freezes and requires a reboot to get back in - so not good for remote management. pretty much the same as most the other reviews on here.

Other Thoughts: Confusing firmware update instructions.

3 out of 5 eggsSimple configuration UI, but ships with bugs

Pros: This router has a simple management UI which makes it very easy to set up. The VPN configuration is the simplest one I've seen in all of the business-class routers I've used - just one page, and you can see the entire VPN definition. This is the simplest implementation, and I prefer this approach best among the VPN routers I've used.

Cons: The router's CLAIMED NAT throughput speed is a whopping 800mbps, but reality is very different. On a 150mbps connection, I get a maximum throughput of about 132mbps. If you look up this router in various forums, there are many postings from users who have 1gbps connections - lucky them - who complain that they can only get max speeds around 135mbps. Those postings are more than a year old.

The other "gotcha" with this router is that the management UI becomes unresponsive - as in, you can't log in to the router to do any configuration work - after it's been running for more than about 24 hours. It still passes traffic, but any attempts to connect to the management UI simply times out after a few minutes. There are forum postings about this problem that date back more than a year. You can't deploy this thing into the field in its current state if you can't remote manage the thing.

So, the first thing I did when I got this router was to update the firmware. The currently shipping firmware DOES NOT fix the above two problems I mentioned. However, if you call the Cisco small biz tech support and describe the problem to them, they will escalate your case and you will be given new, beta firmware that does fix these two problems (you'll have to agree to a beta test contract first).

Other Thoughts: So, overall, the router is usable AFTER you get the newest beta firmware. It's performance is reasonably fast, and configuration is very easy. The VPN connection is very stable. It can be remote managed through https, and it even has a local DNS server inside. I don't use VoIP with this particular router, so I can't vouch for that - I've seen forum posts from users whose VoIP services don't work with this router if both WAN connections are in use.

It's disappointing that a company as big as Cisco doesn't act fast enough to fix long-standing problems and release the fixed firmware officially. But, to their credit, they did FINALLY fix the two most annoying problems - even if they do force you into installing beta software.

I can't vouch for longevity of the router since I've only had it for a few weeks. However, my last RV-series router - a then-Linksys RV0041 - lasted for 8 years. I replaced that RV0041 with this RV042G to get faster throughput for a remote server deployment.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible firmware

Pros: Handles 2 incoming internet lines. Can designate which PCs use which lines.

Cons: web interface will not allow me to log in after a day without reseting it. I have tried updating the firmware and resetting to factory defaults, which works for a little bit, but after a while it just locks up all the time. It still work but you can not log into it to make any changes, which makes it worthless in my opion. I even paid for 1 year support through cisco and they basically told me they can't fix it. It's a know problem. They keep saying to wait for the new firmware, then the new firmware comes out, and it still doesn't work.

Other Thoughts: It's cheap for what it does but what's the point if you can't use it. Buy something else

Manufacturer Response:

Hi,
Sorry for the inconvenience. When you contacted the small business support center, did they give you a Service Request number? If so, please email it to me so that I can see the status of your case. My email address is citoy at cisco dot com. Hopefully we can find a resolution for you.
Regards,
Cindy

1 out of 5 eggsNot up to Cisco Rep

Pros: Performed some basic functionality.

Cons: Does not provide DMZ for single IP owners
Weak tech support
GUI not great

Other Thoughts: Had this for a week so I could DMZ a web server from our single Public static IP. This device can NOT provide a proper DMZ for a single static IP. You need at least 2, which drives up your monthly ISP cost significantly. I've worked much with Cisco (being a CCAI) and this does not appear to be from them; but perhaps a smaller off-shore company. Support was minimal and the support's tech knowledge was much below what I expected. I switched to ZyWall USG50 which is a vastly superior product. When I talked to the techs there it was a difference of night and day. The documentation from Cisco for using their product was incredibly weak; using terms that were not explained technically. Unless you want to do something really basic, this is not a great product.

1 out of 5 eggsUnit Failed twice under a 12 hour period

Pros: All the product features listed in RV042G item description were "pros" I was looking forward to

Cons: Unit failed twice within a 12 hour period, causing significant down time for our company.

Other Thoughts: After the first failure, I gave the unit the benefit of the doubt after being lulled into sense of security by the Cisco branding. The 2nd failure shook me out of the marketing trance Cisco had placed me under. Never again, Cisco.....Never again.

5 out of 5 eggsCisco RV042G

Pros: Crazy fast. I had a dying Linksys (which served me very well; it was simply getting old) which was giving me 0.5-4 Mbps throughput. With the new Cisco router I am getting 26-64 Mbps, depending upon the time of day (I have Comcast cable access). Setup was very easy. The interface is easy to navigate.

Cons: None so far. Does everything I need, and it's FAST.

1 out of 5 eggsDON'T BUY IT - My Opinion

Pros: Dual WAN, DHCP, Gigabit all around, feature rich GUI

Cons: The GUI locks out after a few minutes after being loged in.
After enabling, then disabling the emails of logs, they kept coming. Had a 2 lock ups that required a reboot of the router - unacceptable!!!

Other Thoughts: I am a very unbiased user, I bout this product because it was in the small business class level and had dual WAN for my dual ISP, plus it was a DHCP router - perfect package. But after filing out ticket after ticket with tech support who where responding with "Do you have the latest firmware" which I did out of the box.

If it would have worked, I would have been a happy camper.

Will be returning.

Now setting up a server with pfSense to act as my corporate grade Router/Firewall/VPN/DHCP/ect... - Best option I made so far!!!

1 out of 5 eggsI would not recommend

Pros: works for 3-4 months

Cons: see above for the cons. I have purchased two of these units. Both ver 3. The first one had a problem and it was too late to return to Newegg. So I did not have time to fool with it, everyone needed their connection, I purchased a second one. Now that one after 4 months is losing the internet connection.
Today I went back to the old one to upgrade the firmware and it blew up. It was reporting an Ip address, but it would not open up. Now its on to tech support. After reading everyone's notes, I don't hold out much hope.
