can you put one of these at each and and use to as an extender?

Sure. That's actually what we do with most of these we order. For instance, our office building and our main warehouse are several hundred feet apart. We have fiber optic cable ran underground connecting the two buildings. We come out of a switch in the office and connect to the Ethernet side of one of the converters and connect the other end to a pair of fibers. In the warehouse we connect the same fibers to the other converter then hook the Ethernet side to another switch and feed stuff in the warehouse from it. Works great although if you're using a lot of bandwidth between the two locations you might want to consider upgrading to a Gigabit converter. Hope this helps!
