Good old RTL8139

Pros: I bought this for an old laptop that lacks built-in Ethernet and is limited to USB 1.0, so my USB Ethernet adapter wasn't working out for me. This CardBus card goes much faster. It's also based on the RTL8139 chipset, which is supported by just about every OS on the planet.
Cons: DOES NOT AUTO-SENSE! If you're like me, you're so used to auto-sensing Ethernet ports that you've forgotten what a "crossover cable" is. Luckily, I was able to work around it.
Other Thoughts: Vendor 0x10ec, device 0x8139. In Linux, this card wants the "8139too" driver.

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: price, its super cheap, worked right out of the box with windows 98 on an old ProStar 8500p laptop; once the drivers were installed of course. old drivers for win 95/98/me/xp included on the disk. fits snug in its place once connected, doesn't feel like it will fall out if i move the laptop with it plugged in. Descent speeds even on an ancient laptop.
Cons: no self install software, had to hardware scan and manually load the drivers myself, no big deal for most on newegg but for someone with little experience this could confuse them. the software only gives you a link to a pdf version of the user manual on the disk and the company website, which obviously cant be reached if the product isnt installed since it is after all, a vital piece to your internet connectivity.
Other Thoughts: when you buy something in this price range you're always rolling the dice, and this time it wasn't snake eyes for me. I know the age old proverb "you get what you pay for", but this time i got a little bit more, it worked. in fact it worked rather well. i wouldn't spend much more than this for a part on an old laptop anyway, but if you need it and have a few extra bucks, just buy this one. After all it does work.
