The TRENDnet TEG-PCITXR Ethernet adapter is a high-bandwidth network adapter that delivers high speeds ranging from 10 to 1000 Mbps. This network adapter is capable of auto-sensing connection speed, half/full-duplex modes, and MDI-X media type. For optimum utilization of network bandwidth the adapter utilizes the latest VLAN tagging. The bandwidth can be doubled to up to 2000 Mbps, making this adapter ideal for high traffic Power Server and Video-Conferencing Workstations. The card is compatible with 32-Bit PCI Local Bus Master high-speed operation at Rev. 2.2 specification.
Plug and Play installation ensures no need for external drivers. Its built-in FIFO (8K/64K) buffer decreases memory transfers overhead to minimize network congestion. Great for the budget-conscious, it offers the benefit of Gigabit Ethernet networking, along with the familiarity of existing 32-bit PCI Bus Ethernet. A great network adapter at a greater price!

good value; confusing numbers
- Pros: This card uses the popular inexpensive RTL8169 series gigabit controller chip, so price and software support are pretty good, but performance is mediocre unless you have a quick machine and/or large-ish jumbo frames (9000 bytes or so) to keep the network connection's CPU use low.
Even if it's not the highest performing GigE chip on the market, the low price still makes it a good deal.
- Cons: Reliability seems to vary widely among card manufacturers. They try to squeeze profit out of this low-cost gigabit IC by cutting back quality assurance. I think this manufacturer's entry is a bit better than others'. It's not the cheapest, but you could pay more and get better.
Also, if you're troubleshooting, don't confuse a bottleneck for a reduced connection “mode”. The mode of the ethernet controller has nothing to do with the speed of the bus it bridges to. A gigabit controller could operate in 1000bT mode quite happily on an old ISA bus, even though throughput would be severely bottlenecked by the bus.
- Other Thoughts: Some people seem confused about PCI vs gigabit throughput, and bits vs bytes (note case: 'b' vs 'B'), and the ways mega- and giga- are used (and abused).
32bit PCI @ 33MHz means 33000000 32bit transfers per sec: 33MHz * 32 = 1056000000 bits/sec. There are 8 bits per byte, so we divide by 8 to get 132000000 bytes/sec.
The giga- in gigabit means 10^9 = 1000000000 bits per second (thus 10/100/1000 million bits/sec in “1000baseT”). Dividing by 8, we get 125000000 bytes/sec.
How many megabytes per sec (traditional MB, which is 2^20 bytes, and not true “mega” bytes, which is the slightly smaller 10^6 bytes) are those?
1056000000 / 2^20 ~= 125.9 MB/s for 32bit PCI @ 33MHz (theoretical max). 1000000000 / 2^20 ~= 119.2 MB/s for gigabit ethernet (theoretical max).
The 32bit PCI bus is about 5.5% faster than gigabit ethernet. Most GigE cards don't come close to GigE's theoretical speed, and slow computers without jumbo frames mean the under-performing GigE chip isn't even the bott
cheap Gigabit
- Pros: Cheap, well-supported in Linux, no installation or performance problems so far.
- Cons: Doesn't support full 9000-byte jumbo frames; maximum jumbo frame size is 7200 bytes.
- Other Thoughts: Overall, a decent buy. Works well with a D-Link DGS-108 and cheap CAT-5 cables; it's a vast improvement over my old 100 Mbit LAN setup.

Not working most of the time
- Pros: None.
- Cons: Frequent drop, low connection speed.
- Other Thoughts: I can't get this card to work properly with either TRENDnet or Realtek's driver. This card causes random system crashes on my Vista and XP boxes. On the rare occasion that it works, it only connects at 10Mbits/sec.
Excellent Card
- Pros: I've been using 8 of these in my office for the last couple of years. Excellent performance on our Gigabit network; never had any complaints.
- Cons: None. Performs as it should.
works
- Pros: plug and play downloaded current drivers and linked to other computer at 1 gig very much worth the price!
