2 out of 5 eggsNo improvement in coverage

Pros: Inexpensive. Not too hard to set up, although the admin password thing was misleading between the quickstart and the manual (the quickstart was wrong.) Firmware update was simple. Easy to set up multiple SSIDs. Connections seem fine - nothing dropped that I've noticed.

Cons: I was hoping it would provide better coverage than my FIOS wireless router. But neither one can reach my wireless-n TV less than 50 feet away. Works fine for everything else, so it must be my TV or some interference in the house. Bummer. A waste of money but I knew that was a possible outcome of this test.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Valued Customer,

We are sorry to see that the unit isn’t providing the coverage you were looking for. Channel selection and placement could help. Try varying channels to see if that helps and try to mount your wireless hardware as high as possible and avoid enclosing them in any type of shelving. If you still do not receive a wireless signal it could be interference, the amount and type of obstructions or an issue with the TV. You may want to explore other hardware alternatives such as Powerline.

Adrian

5 out of 5 eggsBulletproof WAP

Pros: Basically a cheap WAP for N. Fast, small, and cheap.

Cons: No Gigabit LAN port. Seems a little odd not to have one on a wireless N device, but whatevs. You'll rarely see actual speeds that fast unless you're right next to it anyways (and no, that's not this WAP's fault, that's just N).

Other Thoughts: No problems recommending this device to friends (and good friends at that!)

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate

Pros: Inexpensive, works most of the time.

Cons: Started dropping connections.

Other Thoughts: Stated earlier that I replaced a 5 year old Rev 1 version of this device that I never had a problem with. This unit started dropping connections. I did a FW update that was available and no dropped connections since.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Small, inexpensive

Cons: Range is poor

Other Thoughts: Should have done my homework. The output power is not what it needs to be to go thru a few walls in my house.

5 out of 5 eggsSuper easy to set up

Pros: Small foot print, easy and fast set up. No knowledge really needed. Just put a wall jack in at the house and connect to it and you're done.

Cons: Port and power connectivity are on the "side" of the device instead of the back. Looks a little weird with the antennas on the side. Cosmetic stuff...

Other Thoughts: I added this to my second floor. I was having trouble getting over 2 bars from one side of the house to the other. It also had to transverse upstairs to downstairs. Now i have to access points in the house. Between the two, i never go under 4 bars now.

2 out of 5 eggsUnstable, seeking better brand

Pros: Cheap to buy. When it works it's OK, though not fast.

Cons: Not so cheap in time required to keep it running. Everyone who uses wi-fi has learned how to pull power to reboot this TrendNet AP, a step never necessary with prior wi-fi gear.

Unit is somewhat stable with laptops running Intel Centrino wi-fi clients. They have trouble maybe once a month, fixed by rebooting AP.

But iPads and phones have a tough time all the time. TrendNet AP drops or simply fails to connect. My colleague takes her iPad Mini to other AP locations where she does not have this problem.

Also, iPad seems to find TrendNet AP ONLY if SSID is broadcast, unfortunate because security was better when it could be hidden.

Yes, our TrendNet AP has latest firmware. The unit has had to be reset to defaults and reconfigured after certain lockups where it would not respond via browser. But these steps just got it back to working for a while, they improved nothing.

(The older wi-fi g AP this unit replaced, brand-not-mentioned per guidelines, was stuck in a back storage building, connected to LAN via Ethernet-over-AC-power, just in case someone needs to connect there. It is still working, reliably, with absolutely no maintenance or rebooting, even though it has acquired quite a few cobwebs.)

Other Thoughts: This TrendNet AP is N300, but we now have dual-band wi-fi radios in our newer laptops. So I am evaluating N600 or better APs/routers, maybe I'll jump to AC (no AC clients yet so that would be a gamble). But based on our experience, I'm looking at other brands.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Techhawk,

I am deeply sorry for your unpleasant experiences with this access point. I am curious if a less congested wireless channel can help to connect to iPads or iPhones. Please email me at adrian@trendnet.com with "Newegg TEW-637AP Review" in the subject line and I will respond to you immediately to assist. Also, if you have any pre-sale questions regarding N600 or AC I definitely can help. I look forward to your reply soon.

Warmest regards,

Adrian

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It works perfectly for me after I set it to "b/g only mode".

Cons: 3 seconds of lag appeared intermittently (roughly every 5 minutes) until I set it to "b/g only mode"

Other Thoughts: It's still plenty fast in b/g mode, though, IMHO, and way better than my old b/g AP.
