5 out of 5 eggsTRENDnet TEG-S80G GREENnet Switch

Pros: Arrived on time from Newegg (always great!), works as described by TRENDnet and I have had no problems with them.

Cons: Cats like to play with the blinking lights.

Other Thoughts: Purchased and deployed in January 2012 and it is now June 2013.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat...for 10 months

Pros: Looks solid, looks good. Works...mostly. Cheap.

Cons: Worked terrific for 10 months. Then I noticed that I could not access my NAS and saw that the switch dropped everything. I unplugged it to troubleshoot and now it doesn't even power back up.

Other Thoughts: None. I just need an unmanaged switch for my internal network. This worked for 10 months and just...stopped.

3 out of 5 eggsAffordable, but...

Pros: It was great while it lasted. I set it up in my entertainment center, using it to stream media as well as remotely accessing my security camera system. It worked very well as long as it worked.

Cons: After about a year, I began to have to power cycle it every couple of days or so.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsGood, while it lasted

Pros: Did what it was supposed to do. Was very reliable until it up and died.

Cons: Died shortly after a year. Disappointed since I have had other TRENDnet products and have been satisfied with them. Expected it to last more than a year.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear TRENDnet Customer,

We are truly sorry for this matter. We at TRENDnet take great pride in our products and testing procedures. Seems to me that there may have been a malfuntion in the hardware. Please contact me at adrian@trendnet.com with "Newegg TEG-S80G Return" in the subject line and I will assist you immediately with the hasslefree return process. 2 out of 5 eggsTRENDnet TEG-S80G Unmanaged 10/100/1000Mbps 8-Port Gigabit GREENnet Switch

Pros: Was good, while it worked. Haven't ever had this issue with other TRENDnet products. That's why I gave it two stars instead of one.

Cons: Had a home network failure that sent entire family into panic mode. Found switch had died. Bit disappointed, especially considering what I paid a year ago for this switch ($49.99).

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsGigabit speed so much better

Pros: I use these as my go to Gig switches. I install these for friends and family when they need more ports. I use mine for connecting my home servers and printers.

Cons: Nothing I can think of. I have used a half dozen or so of these without issues.

Other Thoughts: No DOAs, no problems. Plug it in and it works.

2 out of 5 eggsDied after 2 days

Pros: Worked while it lasted.

Cons: Hooked it up, after 48 hours my entire home network kept resetting itself and not coming back online I would have to unplug and plug this back in.

Other Thoughts: I've had two of these, both dead before a year. I switched to the Rosewill model, worked better.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Pusherman,

5 out of 5 eggsGrade = A.

Pros: This plugged right in & immediately worked (as ANY simple ethernet switch should, with correct CAT5E cabling, etc.).

05/10/2013 test results using a 20Mbps down / 1.5Mbps up internet connection, a fast Core i7 PC with a gigabit connection, with ALL other equipment & settings identical:

through TP-Link TL-SG108 8-port gigabit switch:

test 1: 19.78Mbps down / 1.39Mbps up
test 2: 18.80Mbps down / 1.41Mbps up
test 3: 20.49Mbps down / 1.40Mbps up
test 4: 20.62Mbps down / 1.39Mbps up

through TRENDnet TEG-S80G 8-port gigabit switch (about 2 minutes later):
test 1: 20.07Mbps down / 1.41Mbps up
test 2: 21.80Mbps down / 1.40Mbps up
test 3: 20.87Mbps down / 1.40Mbps up
test 4: 21.36Mbps down / 1.41Mbps up

You'd never notice this speed difference, but the (slightly cheaper, as of the writing of this review) TRENDnet did win the side-by-side speed test. Again, you'd never notice that speed difference, & it's probably within the fluctuation of the cable web connection, but after four tests
each, a pattern is seen.

Speed winner: TRENDnet.
Price winner: TRENDnet.

Cons: This has only a 3-year warranty, versus its competition @ 5 years.
Warranty winner: TP-Link.

Other Thoughts: The TP-Link plugs the CAT5e cables into the front, whereas the TRENDnet plugs them into the back. Which is better depends on your environment & your preference, so that's a wash. Both worked without a hitch, so as far as I'm concerned, they're both "winners."

5 out of 5 eggsNot a Router

Pros: This is a switch.... Not a router. It will not service DHCP requests nor will it route IP traffic.

Cons: None as long as you know what you're buying. This is an excellent switch. This will not serve as a router on your network.

Other Thoughts: For everyone complaining about this device not sharing internet with multiple devices, you need to understand the difference between a switch and a router. You have to have a router if you want to have more than one device connecting to your internet connection. This device will only switch datagrams otherwise known as frames and they contain absolutely no IP header information whatsoever. You don't have to use a TRENDnet router to resolve the problem and you don't have to pay for their tech support, however you do need a router. Period. Google Router vs. Switch and educate yourself on the difference. Routers operate at layer 3 of the OSI Model and Switches operate at layer 2.

Before anyone questions my post, I'm a Sr. Network Engineer with years of experience in this field. I am a subject matter expert.

It's a shame that TENDnet tech support can't explain this.
