can this device be used as a repeter? so that I use the ethernet cable to connect it to the network (a remote hub) and use it to broadcast a wifi signal of the network?

Offhand, I don't see how it could do that. The purpose of the product is to attach a wire-only Ethernet device to a WiFi network. (In my case, I attached a printer.) The product presents the device (my printer) as a wireless device with a specific IP address to a router's network. A WiFi router implements a small local network that (1) allows multiple devices to communicate with one another, and (2) provides a gateway to other networks (typically, the Internet). There is a type of product that does what you want: a network repeater, or a remote hub, but they cost more. You could also replace your existing router with one with a stronger signal (I think Newegg sells them), but in addition to the cost, you need to configure it yourself (i.e., don't expect much help from the cable company). I don't know how much you need to extend the range, but sometimes relocating a router can do the trick. Metal blocks the signal, as do electrical/electronic devices. (Example: Putting your router behind a flat-screen TV may not be a good idea.) Walls can make a difference, depending on how much wiring, plumbing, or structural metal is in it. If the router has two equal antennas, try positioning one vertically and the other horizontally, so that at least one of them is optimally oriented for your remote WiFi device's internal antenna. If you are in a multi-story private house and aren't getting reception on the top floor, maybe there are too many floors (i.e., more than one) between the router and the remote device; relocating the router to an intermediate floor might be an acceptable compromise, provided it doesn't drastically reduce the signal (and, therefore, speed) to other devices. You might also consider replacing your existing router with another that puts out a stronger signal.

I'm using this as an access point to connect my Sony Blu-ray players wired Ethernet port to my network.  It works well this way and I've never had an issue or had to cycle power etc.  It should work the same way with any device (such as older technology) that only has a wired port that you want to connect to your wireless network.

I have not used it as a repeater.  I do not remember if it supported that mode and the TRENDnet website does not list this as a native firmware function.  There could be open source firmware to enable this function. I did not find support for dd-wrt.

From a practical stand-point a repeater function is best performed by a router with external antennas to give maximum range  and speed with the least chance of data loss.  This unit is small (about 5in tall) so the internal antennas cannot have that much area.  It is MIMO so that's a plus.

Question 3

I have this adapter, and while it serves its purpose as providing network access to nonwireless devices which have Ethernet ports. I connect the Trendnet to a 5 port bridge, which allows me to connect up to 5 remote devices to my network.
The only problem I have is that the adapter occasionally needs to be manually reconfigured. The last few times I have done this, I set it up to have a static IP address of 192.168.1.208, so that I could set up a permanent bookmark in my browser to access the adapter's menu interface. But although it connects to my wireless network, I can't access it via my browser using the 192.168.1.208 IP address. In addition, only the power and LAN lights are illuminated. The wireless light is dark. Does anybody have an idea how to get around this?

Question 4

I just installed a surveillance system in my barn, 400 ft max away from the house and my wifi network.  The DVR is wireless capable but obviously out of range of my network. No way to install software on the DVR for an air card.  Would this work?

If you have an Ethernet connection on your DVR this would connect but I don't believe it would do anything greater than the wireless capabilities of the DVR onboard wireless. I would suggest a mifi that broadcasts wireless signal instead of an air card.  I am purely guessing that there is some sort of web interface you can setup from the DVR manufacturer.
