1 out of 5 eggsWaste of money

Pros: Good idea: small and simple.
Although, first few days it worked as necessary.

Cons: After few days it start disconnecting, then no accept connections, and finally stopped work at all.
I am IT professional, applied all my knowledge and spent a lot of time to get it worked. No result.

Other Thoughts: Waste of money, poor quality product.
Newegg policy covers only replacement, no refunds. Think twice before buying.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointing product

Pros: Great idea, poorly executed
Sale price was great
Perfect size and travel case is nice

Cons: I have tried two of these this past week, and both have the same issues:
Sometimes it works great, sometimes it does not work. For example, I have high bandwidth into my home from Comcast Blast. Our mobile devices (iPhone, iPads, Kindles) all connect at either 2.4 G or 5G to our Asus RT-N66U router and WD Range Extenders, fine, usually at 40mbps at either band, depending upon proximity to signal. strength.
This travel router can be connected at near 40mbps -- when it works. Problem is, it is flaky. I tested it again before I yanked it from power just now so I can can repack it. It barely got 1mbps. Sometimes it can't even connect to the wireless devices.
Last night it was working well, and had two 1080p videos streaming through it to iPad and Kindle at same time. Worked great. It got hot alright, but it worked fine for over an hour doing this. This morning it would barely work (and it was cooler). Then it worked well again; then it didn't. (You get the picture.)
I have set it up as a router and an AP; no difference in performance.
I have many tools to measure the performance of wireless signals; first using, and a great Android app called WiFi Analyzer. These tools graphically show what is happening, and good signals measure good, and bad ones measure bad. This travel router measures mostly bad.

Other Thoughts: Not recommended at all, unless you want the same problems I and others have mentioned. One often cannot tell how well it is working without using the tools mentioned above.
Newegg is great regarding the first exchange, and now the return for refund.

I have many (four or more) TrendNet gigabit network switches in my house. They all work well, so I figured the travel router would, too, but I was wrong! Product gets 1 Star, because at least it was not also DOA.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Mike,

Thank you for sharing with us regarding the inconsistent Wi-Fi speed. Based on your input, we would suggest to measure TEW-654TR performance with only one wireless client connected to it in your whole network via or Wi-Fi analyzer. If you still witness inconsistent speed please email me at with “Newegg TEW-654TR R” in the subject line and we will contact you immediately to go through the hassle free RMA process. We hope to hear from you soon to restore your faith in TRENDnet.

Warmest regards,

2 out of 5 eggsNice...while it lasted

Pros: ► Small Footprint
► Excellent Price Point
► Relatively Easy to Set Up
► Up to Task...when Working
► TrendNet Technical Support

Cons: ►Runs Hot
►Unreliable Life
►Short Return Window
►Died in Less than One Month

Other Thoughts: I was initially leary about purchasing this router since several reviews made claims of similar units running hot and/or of premature failure, Anyway, when NewEgg put the router on sale at a ridiculously-low price, I decided to take a chance and give it a go.

I had big hopes for this tiny router when purchased. The unit worked great right out of the box, and set up was a breeze. The unit functioned in an apartment with four different Internet users, with four individual computers, and with a shared wireless printer. Connectivity and download speeds were never an issue. Everyone was pleased and surprised how well the tiny router performed. Unfortunately, my unit suffered the same fate as the other units that were reported as running hot and dying young. In less than 30 days, the router was toast.

The reason for awarding two eggs instead of one was TRENDnet's technical support. They were superb. They had me run a few checks and tests, and they worked with me on the determining that the router had indeed given up the ghost. They stood behind their product and directed me to NewEgg for a replacement or refund. As usual, NewEgg was prompt to offer me either a replacement or a refund. I opted for a refund and decided to purchase another router by a different manufacturer...through NewEgg of course.

I cannot recommend this router, but I can recommend TRENDnet and NewEgg. They both provided hassle-free customer service.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello TRENDnet Customer,

I can understand your frustration for this unit not meeting your needs. I see that you have already returned this product for a refund through Newegg's hassle free return. I'm glad to see that our helpful Customer Service took care of your needs promptly. 4 out of 5 eggsWorks good as AP, doesn't do WISP

Pros: + Easy to set up to provide mobile devices WiFi access point to a wired Ethernet connection. Working in 5 minutes.
+ Works good as a bridge for wired devices (e.g., printers with an Ethernet Cat5 jack) to connect to a wireless network.

Cons: - Doesn't work at all as a Wireless Internet Service Provider device.
- Meaning, if you want to use this in a Las Vegas hotel to share one paid Wifi connection between a laptop and 2 smartphones, it won't do that.

Other Thoughts: Great for use as a Wifi access point for your smartphones and tablets to a *wired* network connection.

But it wont do WISP... Many, if not most of the Vegas hotels don't have a wired Ethernet jack in the rooms anymore. So a device that shares a single purchased Wifi connection between all your devices, and avoids ridiculous $10/day per device charges is what you need, i.e., WISP.
For a travel router that does support WISP, for the Las Vegas hotel scenario, one that I subsequently got, and works, and covers all the scenarios is the TP-Link MR3040 and MR3020. The MR3040 also supports 3G/4G wireless using a USB dongle modem. Those run about $45 or so at last check. the MR3040 has a built-in battery and this supports a "very mobile" away from power scenario.

3 out of 5 eggsIt works but has very limited range

Pros: 1. Small and portable.
2. Has USB power supply. Needs 2 ports though.
3. Includes CAT5e cable.
4. Has power supply included - made for US mostly.

Cons: I bought 2. Set both of them up. Updated the firmware from TrendNet. Went smoothly. I was planning on using this as AP to extend the range.

1. Every setting change requires a auto-reboot.
2. Can't seem to access the router using Chrome. IE works.
3. During setup, I had to log on to my main router, look at the client list, find the TrendNet IP number and log on through there. The default access doesn't work. It took several attempts and changing different log on IP location to get it right.
4. Range is VERY limited. 10 ft away with no obstruction, you will lose 2-3 bars. Going up outside, even with windows, at 10 ft, you may get 1 bar. Going upstairs, 10 ft away, you will get a poor signal. If you are directly over it, signal will improve to 3-4 bars. At 15-20 feet, forget it. You'll lose connection. I tested with both units. In a small motel room, you will be ok. In a small apt, as long as you are within 10-15ft, you will probably be ok. (The main home router -ASUS- signal is still 5 bars in these circumstance.

4. It does get very warm. Vents are on the bottom. May need to turn it on the side or invert it for better heat dissipation.

Other Thoughts: Works ok. May be useful in a pinch. The range is very limited though. Consider your application or it very carefully.

3 out of 5 eggsCheck Your Connection Speed

Pros: Small, light and mine came with a 110-220 power brick so I'm good for international travel. A few trips through the menu and I was configured. Has MAC filtering. Travel case is a nice touch.

Cons: Connection speed is very slow unless network cable is repeatedly and snugly connected. After configuring the TEW-654TR the connection to my laptop seemed pokey. A Speedtest showed a 2mbps connection on my home ISP - Comcast. Changing the RJ45 cable and router port brought that up to 10mbps so I wrote it off as a bad cable but the next day I was back down to 2mbps again. Repeatedly removing and inserting the RJ45 cable 4 or 5 times brought the connection speed back up. My ISP is stable, my home router doesn't behave this way and I've tried multiple cables and ports so the problem seems to be with the TEW-654TR, maybe I just got a flakey one. Minus 2 eggs for this.

Other Thoughts: Check your connection speed. I know now that when I travel with this I'll have to run some kind of speedtest each day to make sure it's connected properly. It should work properly out of the box.

5 out of 5 eggsTRENDnet makes good stuff!!!

Pros: I really like TRENDnet stuff! No question, this is a FANTASTIC little device. Comes with a nice case, is easy to use and just flat out WORKS! If you're looking for a portable setup / road warrior gear, look no further. I keep one in my car and in my kit. They come in handy when you don't think you'll need it, but GLAD that you do have it!

Cons: None that I can think of... Maybe a smaller power brick... But it does come with USB options which are nice...

Other Thoughts: I've used this thing in bridge mode and it works very well for that too! Unit gets warm when streaming NetFlix, but nothing that would burn your face!

3 out of 5 eggsNot bad, gets really hot!

Pros: It's small, comes with a nice little zip up case and a flat CAT5 cable. It has all the basic features.

Cons: I usually have to unplug and plug it back in again within the first 5 minutes of setting it up. I'm not sure what the deal is, but it will stop transferring data until it's reset the first time. After that it's fine.
It gets HOT. Not just a little, A LOT. Doesn't seem to effect operation.
Poor signal. Not really a big issue, but in a standard hotel room when placed in one corner of the room, you'd be hard pressed to get a signal from the other end of the same room. Since my intent is security from hotel networks, it doesn't bother me that much, but if you're looking for something that can broadcast a wireless signal a decent ways, look elsewhere.

Other Thoughts: It's not a bad little router really. I needed something to put up a wall between insecure hotel networks and my computer. This little thing fits the bill and it's very portable.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Naviathan,

Deeply sorry for what you have experienced. Do you know what signal level your wireless client gets from the TEW-654TR? We suspect it might be due to an unusual hot unit. Please contact me at with “Newegg TEW-654TR” in the subject line and I will respond immediately to troubleshoot or send a replacement. We Look forward to your reply soon and hope to restore your faith in TRENDnet’s products.

Warmest regards,

5 out of 5 eggsused this for years

Pros: I have been using this model for years. Everytime I see a sale I buy more. The router works flawlessly and newegg knows how to through a sale. I paid $19.00 for my last two before the price went up. When I was on the first floor of a hotel (directly below of course) I received the signal from the 2nd floor. Not bad huh.

Cons: I forgot it once and was really upset, but hey that's my fault.

Other Thoughts: Seriously, this is a great product. It works with the big boys.
