5 out of 5 eggsNevermind my other review

Pros: It works normally and does what you expect it to do. 30megabytes a second downloads and uploads as advertised.

Cons: Will reset to static IP at times.

Other Thoughts: My other review blamed the TEW-640 for more than just changing to static IP. Turns out, after tons of troubleshooting, that a roomate changed our router firewall to high from medium and that was the issue with Steam, GW2 and Teamspeak. Overall, I'd give this product a 4 since it has issues changing back to static IP. I gave it a 5 here to try to balance off the 1 I gave it before.

1 out of 5 eggsStopped working after 3 months

Pros: When it works, it is great

Cons: When it does, there is really no explanation for why.

Other Thoughts: Came home after a long weekend away, booted up the PC and found that my TEW-640 doesn't want to work anymore. Figure out that it had somehow reset the IP settings, so I did a reset and did the configuration again, setting it to DHCP. Finished that, and it can connect to the internet. Thing is, now, it won't connect to Steam or Guild Wars 2 for some reason. No other settings changed on my computer, so I am blaming the media bridge for this. We'll see what kind of support I get.

2 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

Pros: In the short term I was very happy with the purchase. It was very easy to set up and seemed to work well.

Cons: After a few weeks it would occasionally stop working and need a reset. Then it would happen more frequently. After about 6 months, it happened all the time. Basically at this point it is useless for any website or game that requires significant data exchange (social networking; streaming, gaming). Trendnet gave convoluted troubleshoots that never resolved the problem.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

The TEW-640MB is a wireless client. The access point that it connects to defines all wireless network parameters. Try changing channels on your router to see if you receive a better signal on a different channel. Please also ensure that you have not selected to hide your SSID on the router. This can cause connectivity issues.
For best practices when placing wireless hardware try to mount them as high as possible with plenty of space around them so they can better send and receive wireless signals. Avoid enclosing the unit inside any type of shelving or placing them near anything that would cause radio frequency interference.

If you continue to have issues with the unit it could be hardware related. Please email me at Adrian@trendnet.com with your contact information and a link to this review. We’ll have someone help you start the RMA process for warranty services as soon as possible.

Regards,
Adrian

3 out of 5 eggsDoes not work for Samsung Smart TV

Pros: Easy to install. Works for media players.

Cons: It does not work for my Samsung Smart TV no matter how hard I tried. Not sure it's this bridge's or the TV's problem.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Cheaply produced. I tried to connect to my network. The unit keeps resetting itself every 30 seconds after establishing a connection. No firmware update since 2 years ago. I would stay away from this one.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great with our TivoHD & Sony BR Player

Pros: I just installed mine. Super easy with the WPS setup. Press the WPS button on my ASUS router and then the WPS button the on the media bridge. Just a few seconds worth of effort. Took longer to take everything out of the box.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Have it hooked up in our bedroom to our TivoHD and Sony Blu-Ray player. Streams Netlix perfectly on the Tivo and "Prime" streaming on the BR player. Super happy. Now I am going to sell the Tivo wireless G adapter...

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as intended

Pros: Does what it is supposed to do. Has been up for over a year without a reboot.

Cons: None that I can tell after a year

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these for my house to provide a stronger wireless connection to my Xbox 360. Previously we would often lose connection. I placed one in the halfway point between the router and xbox, and another near the xbox.

I hardwired the xbox to the bridge and let the bridge bounce to the other bridge and to the router. Solved the problem and works great.

2 out of 5 eggsVery Finicky

Pros: - when it works it reaches 8-9 MB/s.
- allows me to WOL a computer attached to it

Cons: - very difficult setup (and I am a network architect).
- drops signal frequently
- it takes a while to start working again
- web interface is slow and unstable (flashes when it updates, freezes, resets for no reason)

Other Thoughts: This is hooked up to my HTPC and allows me to wake it up remotely (WOL). This works reliably. The problem is when you want to transfer a file. Windows (7) goes through a few cycles of trying to copy the file and getting connection cannot be established, not responsive, not available etc. It is very frustrating to have to wait every time until this device resets 3-4 times before it starts working again. I often open the web interface at the same time and can see it restarting (not responding, asking me to login again) and resetting the wireless statistics counts. Many times I get fed up and just run a cable temporarily to the remote computer. It makes me really appreciate having a wired gigabit connection.

I would not buy this again. Sorry Trendnet but this product is flaky at best and there is no support. have checked on the Trendnet website for a new firmware version a few times and there is none.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Kman,

I can understand your overall frustration for this bridge not working as promised and for that we apologize. I would suggest to do a soft reset first and re-install firmware again. Meanwhile, if possible, please locate and use a less congested wireless channel in your wireless network. If these don’t help please email me directly at adrian@trendnet.com with "Newegg TEW-640MB Review" in the subject line, and I will respond immediately to assist. If it turns out to be a defective unit then I will help for a hassle free return. I look forward to your reply soon.

Warm Regards,

Adrian

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: Was easy for me to install and configure. Has good signal when it works.

Cons: Looses connection every day. Will usually re-establish connection after rebooting but at times will need to be rebooted 2-3 times to re-establish the connection. I am Very Disappointed in this product. After a week or so of constant dropouts I threw it against the wall and shattered it so it was a total waste of money for me.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Henry,

I can understand your disappointment and frustration with the connection failure. If you didn't throw the unit like you said you did, then I will be able to assist you in a hassle free return. 3 out of 5 eggsDifficult

Pros: Seems to work well after difficult setup

Cons: Very confusing setup, requiring doing Trendnet's job for them.

Do not buy if you aren't network savvy.

Other Thoughts: I received a reply from Trendnet which was a cop-out. This appliance ships with a static IP address and wants you to fill in the IP of the default gateway. Well, the default gateway is your router.

Of all the lame excuses I've seen, Trendnet's takes the cake. I explained below how to set it up, but it shouldn't be necessary. It would plug and play if it had a dynamic IP selected in setup.

If your system goes down and this unit won't work, once you have rebooted your modem and router and your internet is working, simply unplug this unit and plug it back in. It needs to be rebooted too. That's it.

Just be sure that when you first get it you follow my suggestions below, log into it using Internet Explorer and change it to "Auto."

Now reboot everything and mine works fine.

Trendnet should ship the unit set to auto and it would plug and play.
