1 out of 5 eggsPiece of garbage

Pros: Bought two on massive sale for my desktop that has a broken WiFi adapter but solid Ethernet. Thought this would be a perfect fit, although I was hesitant considering bad experiences with trendnet products in the past (which is why I bought two). Sure enough...

Cons: Wireless reception is pure garbage. My laptop (which is currently sitting literally two inches away from this unit) can pick up signals for 4 different SSID's, including the one in my house and three in neighboring houses. Ditto for my desktop before the WiFi went out. The first one I bought at one time detected a random SSID I have never seen before (and does not exist in my neighborhood), and didn't see it since. No amount of tweaking the settings or upgrading the firmware fixed it. Never did see my AP.

Contacted Trendnet support to see if I managed to get some settings wrong. Nope, the tech rep claimed hardware failure was to blame, and that I needed to send the unit back to them. Luckily I bought two right? Opened up the second unit, hooked it up, and it actually saw my network! But again, saw no others. Managed to get it working for about half an hour until it quit picking up my WiFi. Tried the same as the first one, upgraded firmware, tweaked settings, nothing was going to do it.

Bottom line: I bought two of these for less than 50% retail price of one, and considering what unholy trash the thing is, this is worthless to me. Trendnet support was less than helpful (and also less than comprehending of my situation -- some Indian schmuck with an American-sounding name yet copy-paste answers for everything). This would probably be a good product if it had a halfway decent antenna, but as it is, it's only useful if you're within Ethernet distance of your router anyways so what's the point?

Other Thoughts: Done with Trendnet products in general. I previously bought a wireless printer driver from them ten years back, and it worked for a good week or two until it somehow fried itself. Frankly ANYTHING with a "Trendnet" brand is now something I will forever shun and turn my back on. They've lost me as a customer with their shoddy workmanship and even shoddier products.

1 out of 5 eggspoor quality

Pros: not as overheated as netgear WNCE2001.

Cons: Bought as a replacement of my old netgear WNCE2001. Worked great for about 5 hours. Then data speed degraded significantly (less than 1 mbps even next to the wireless router). Essentially became useless.

Other Thoughts: Good product concept. but why is it so difficult to make a reliable and good quality product?

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointing

Pros: WPA2, Lots of configuration options, can be connected to a switch for more ports. Very fast when working measured 368 Mbits PC to PC with 4 of 5 bars strength.

Cons: Looses connectivity every time it is not used. This is a big one and worth the other four stars. So you have to push the link up button on your router than you have 60 seconds to push the link button on this device. No problem...except you have to do it every time you turn off your computer or just when your computer goes to sleep, and pretty much every time this thing is not used for 30 minutes or more. When it's idle it disconnects. Extremely disappointed as I use this device downstairs and my modem is upstairs.

Other Thoughts: Buy one that stays connected even when not in use. Once you get past the poor quality wizard they provide you for setup it actually has a lot of options for configuration however nothing that will keep it connected when not in use.

4 out of 5 eggsWorth the $$

Pros: I was watching Netflix 10 minutes after opening the box. This appliance is cake to setup. Rock stable with plenty of bandwidth while streaming video. Love it.

Cons: I subtracted an egg because the link needs to be reset every once in a while. That could be improved. Not a big deal for me, but I can walk over and hit the reset button with ease. If I would have had to place this in a hard to get at place, e.g. behind other stuff, that little reset thing would be annoying. That said - I still love it and it is well worth the price.

2 out of 5 eggsDoesn't seem to work on DVR's

Pros: Price.

Cons: Can’t for the life of me get my Directv DVR to recognize this puppy. Recognized on my laptop but it was advertised as working with DVR’s. No joy so I am returning it.

5 out of 5 eggsNeed WIFI

Pros: This is an excellent piece of tech if you need something that is hard wired to be WiFi. I use it on an older XBOX 360 instead of buying the $100 adapter. The Xbox recognizes it as a hard wire connection! It is the same for any hard wire device that does not have WiFi.

Cons: Wish it had more then one port in the back to allow multiple devices.

5 out of 5 eggsWonderful unit

Pros: Worked great right out of the box. Connected to unmanaged 4 port switch to feed TV, HD-DVD player, Blu Ray player and all work flawlessly. Set Static IP in router mirrored to TEW and has been solid ever since.

Cons: none

1 out of 5 eggsGreat when it works...

Pros: When it is working, I am able to get excellent download speeds off of this thing, as well as get great performance while gaming online.

Cons: As you may be reading in other reviews, after a month or two of usage, it starts getting connection issues. It will disconnect itself from the internet quite often throughout the day. It doesn't matter if I am downloading a lot or just idling. It will reconnect on its own after 20-30 seconds, but this is still extremely frustrating if gaming online as you will often be booted from whatever server you were playing on.

There is little to no help to be found on Trendnet's website other than a firmware update, but good luck getting that to work. When following the instructions included with the update, it will give you a link to a web page for the adapter to apply the update. Unfortunately, whenever I tried to access this page, it can never be opened. All other web pages work, but it is as if these update pages no longer exist.

Other Thoughts: tl:dr I strongly recommend against this product.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Anonymous,

We feel extremely sorry for your frustration while breaking connection and updating firmware. Please try to update firmware via the following link, http://www.trendnet.com/downloads/list_subcategory.asp?SUBTYPE_ID=1447, if you failed to update. Also, reset back to the factory default and re-configure is highly recommended. If these still don’t help please contact me at Adrian@trendnet.com with “Newegg TEW-687GA R” in the subject line and I will respond immediately to assist and get connection up and running again. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon and hope to restore your faith in TRENDnet’s products.

Warmest regards,

Adrian
