5 out of 5 eggsNeed WIFI

Pros: This is an excellent piece of tech if you need something that is hard wired to be WiFi. I use it on an older XBOX 360 instead of buying the $100 adapter. The Xbox recognizes it as a hard wire connection! It is the same for any hard wire device that does not have WiFi.

Cons: Wish it had more then one port in the back to allow multiple devices.

5 out of 5 eggsWonderful unit

Pros: Worked great right out of the box. Connected to unmanaged 4 port switch to feed TV, HD-DVD player, Blu Ray player and all work flawlessly. Set Static IP in router mirrored to TEW and has been solid ever since.

Cons: none

1 out of 5 eggsGreat when it works...

Pros: When it is working, I am able to get excellent download speeds off of this thing, as well as get great performance while gaming online.

Cons: As you may be reading in other reviews, after a month or two of usage, it starts getting connection issues. It will disconnect itself from the internet quite often throughout the day. It doesn't matter if I am downloading a lot or just idling. It will reconnect on its own after 20-30 seconds, but this is still extremely frustrating if gaming online as you will often be booted from whatever server you were playing on.

There is little to no help to be found on Trendnet's website other than a firmware update, but good luck getting that to work. When following the instructions included with the update, it will give you a link to a web page for the adapter to apply the update. Unfortunately, whenever I tried to access this page, it can never be opened. All other web pages work, but it is as if these update pages no longer exist.

Other Thoughts: tl:dr I strongly recommend against this product.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Anonymous,

We feel extremely sorry for your frustration while breaking connection and updating firmware. Please try to update firmware via the following link, http://www.trendnet.com/downloads/list_subcategory.asp?SUBTYPE_ID=1447, if you failed to update. Also, reset back to the factory default and re-configure is highly recommended. If these still don’t help please contact me at Adrian@trendnet.com with “Newegg TEW-687GA R” in the subject line and I will respond immediately to assist and get connection up and running again. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon and hope to restore your faith in TRENDnet’s products.

Warmest regards,

Adrian

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible

Pros: Fast...when it works

Cons: Drops connection constantly. This device needs reset on a daily basis then needs re-configured, and if I'm lucky, will keep a connection for a few hours until it drops out again. I have the latest firmware and it has not helped with dropped connections. I'm now in the process of looking for a replacement.

Other Thoughts: I do not recommend this product.

1 out of 5 eggsHorribly Inconsistent

Pros: The signal and link strength are very good from what I have seen with multiple routers and varied distances through floor levels, when it works this functions like a good product.

Cons: *Updated to the 9/12 firmware, no change*

Everything ran fine for the first month and a half, after which the device stopped connecting to my computer and would return a blank gateway. Power cycling did not resolve the issue. Resetting the adapter several times I was able to get a connection as well as find another flaw- after a fresh reset the adapter would connect to a router ONLY THROUGH WPS. Any information I manually put in would be lost after I tried to apply the settings, when I would look at them again they would be random values other than what I had put in. It works for a few days or a few weeks at a time, then has to be reset before I can get a connection.

Other Thoughts: I have owned this for over 9 months, it is fairly expensive for what it is and what it does, the fact it functions like a cheap piece of garbage is unacceptable and quite disappointing.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsWould not buy again

Pros: Easy setup when it worked.
Connection would be stable for the 30-60 minutes it would run at a time.

Cons: Connection blanked out constantly. Could not finish matches of online games without losing connection at least once. The wireless connection in my home is 24 mb down, 2.4 mb up and my laptop in the same room was reading full bars so there was no reason for the spotty service.

After changing wireless routers to accommodate a larger portion of the house, I could no longer access the setup on this device and promptly returned it for a refund.

Other Thoughts: I am willing to defer to the amount of people who have had good experiences and accept that my specific device or situation may have worked against this unit's overall quality, but after using the TEW-687GA for a month and logging ~8 hours a week of online gaming through it, I would recommend it.

1 out of 5 eggslook somewhere else

Pros: good when it worked

Cons: first one started giving me the perm-yellow triangle no matter what i tried to fix it.....RMA'd it...got the second one....worked fine for a month or 2...then started getting intermittent yellow triangle. Had to reset not very often. The last week, connection would last maybe an hour then...yellow triangle, ...troubleshooting doesnt work, unplug it for like 20 minutes.....it may work...but for like an hour then back to yellow triangle....im done with it...im glad i bought this on sale cause if i would have payed 150 bucks for this, i would have shot myself. Going with Don's suggestion and getting the premiertek.

Manufacturer Response:

Valued Customer,

2 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

Pros: Very good while it lasted. Ping and download speeds matching a wired connection getting the full 50 Mbps from my ISP

Cons: Became flaky after 3 weeks of use. Internet connection would drop out every day or so and windows would show that I was connected to an unknown network.

Access to the configuration page for the adapter was a a crapshoot, most of the time my web browser couldn't find the page even though the computer light on the adapter was lit.

At first I was able to fix this by hard resting the router and reconfiguring it, now I'm not even able to do that. RMA time.

Manufacturer Response:

Valued Customer,

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you. If possible, please take our advice as follows:

1. Reset to the factory default setting by using the reset button.
2. Please update firmware if applicable from this link, http://www.trendnet.com/downloads/list_subcategory.asp?SUBTYPE_ID=1447
3. Web into the TEW-687GA to re-configure. Connect to the router to create and activate one profile only. Then, power cycle the TEW-687GA to expect connection to the router automatically.

If it still doesn’t help please contact us at sales@trendnet.com, reference "New Egg product review" and people will contact you immediately for replacement. We look forward to working with you directly to restore your faith in TRENDnet products.

2 out of 5 eggsFirmware flash off website failed - DEAD

Pros: Small. Ethernet port connects to machine removing the hassle of wireless device detection. If no updates are performed, it's about as good as any wireless device I've tried from my place. Physical quality is overall good and device isn't big enough to catch your attention.

Cons: Performance seemed to degrade over time so I attempted a firmware update - fail. Radio doesn't turn on when powered anymore. Out of laziness I have yet to introduce it to the trash collector.

Latency was reasonable by comparison to other cards I've tried, but nothing exceptional. Warcraft had lag spikes, like every other device I've ever used from this location. Connection to router through multiple walls totaling around 50ft was averaging around 4-5ms. If that's supposedly good, it's time to run some cable.

Firmware development is non-existent. Reflashing was a "last ditch effort" that has me now throwing the device into a ditch.

Other Thoughts: I have not tried to reach out to the mfg. for replacement yet so I have no input about whether they're good or bad about support. No registration card anywhere so I assume I'll be road-blocked. Device deserves two stars for performing basic functions without catastrophic failure but deducted the rest due to impending doom if you seek to update it.

Manufacturer Response:

Valued Customer,

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you. Please take our advice as follows:

1. Double check if you could update firmware via the Ethernet port again. If not, then we could RMA this unit.
2. If you could please reset it to the factory default and check if radio is available. If not, then we could RMA it.
3. If available, please choose channel width 20/40 when you don’t have 802.11b devices around.
4. Meanwhile, suggest to choose a fixed wireless channel with the help from the InSSIDer tool to avoid overlapping.

If it still doesn’t help please contact us at sales@trendnet.com, reference "New Egg product review" and our Sr. technical personnel would like to help and resolve the issue. We look forward to working with you directly to restore your faith in TRENDnet products.

1 out of 5 eggs50/50 Chance

Pros: If this thing worked as intended it would be awesome. It seems to for some, but not for the rest. So if you think your found your adapter then good luck. You have a 50/50 chance.
