2 out of 5 eggsOverheats and shuts off

Pros: 3 units are working fine
Enough speed for my 25 Mbps internet connection

Cons: One of the units Overheats

Other Thoughts: I bought two sets of these (4 units). 3 of the units work great but one of them overheats and shuts off after a few minutes of use.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello CGS,

We are sorry to hear that you are having an issue with one of the adapters. Please email Adrian@trendnet.com and we’ll have someone help you setup an RMA request for warranty services as soon as possible.

Adrian

3 out of 5 eggsDepends on Your Application

Pros: - Easy set up
- Good for some applications where you can't use wireless or wired

Cons: - Erratic throughput
- Very little (ok, essentially zero) diagnostic information

Other Thoughts: I bought these to connect a HTPC to my NAS. Wireless throughput was too low for HD, and running a cable would have been problematic. Set up was easy. Throughput, however, is very erratic, which is bad for watching movies. First, it depends a great deal on where you place the connectors. Experiment a little. Second, even when I see average throughputs of 20kbs - 25kbs it will regularly fall below 5kbs. And performance seems to be degrading slowly over time. Moral of the story - no much good for use with HTPC.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Valued Customer,

We are sorry to hear that you are having some connectivity issues. Please visit our website for the latest firmware updates located on the Support page. Try using different outlets and disconnecting electronics around the units to see if you can identify a device that may be causing interference. If you do find a device causing interference try relocating the device or use a different outlet. Please also ensure you disconnect chargers that aren’t actively charging devices as they can cause interference on Powerline networks. Also avoid using GFI outlets and outlets on AFCI breakers as they can also cause issue with Powerline.

Regards,

Adrian

4 out of 5 eggsBe sure to update firmware

Pros: Plug low profile does not get in the way of the 2nd AC outlet if you plug it into the lower plug.
Easy to sync to 2nd adapter.
Firmware very easy to update.

Cons: Software and firmware needed to be updated to latest from Trendnet's website.

Utility pgm crashed on startup until upgraded.
Does not give you 500mbps thruput (that's lab environments), real life I got 105mbps.

Other Thoughts: I'd buy this again but use it only in a paired mode by setting a different network name; too many devices sharing a 105mbps pathway is not ideal.

5 out of 5 eggsWireless killers

Pros: After reading the reviews all I have to say is these adapters exceeded my expectations.

The home network is 8 computers with 3 direct cabled to the wireless router and the remaining 5 being wireless comprised of 2 laptops and 3 desktops.

The modem is a Motorola SB6121 going to a wireless router D-Link 615 running 4 hard ports (10/100 Mbps) and wireless N, and finally a D-Link 8 port gigabit switch attached to the router.

Comcast is the internet provider with a 30 Mbps maximum download service. Typical wireless download speeds range about 17-20 Mbps tops with 5 bars and the hard ports download speeds range from 27 into the 29's Mbps. All speed measures using Speedtest.net .

I hooked up one adapter to the switch. Simply plugged the adapter into the wall and attached a cable from the adapter to the switch. That's it.

Plugged in and cabled the 2nd adapter to a slow wireless dual core laptop in the bar down stream from a GFCI. Took about 1 minutes for the adapter to initialize and wa la, got about 28 Mbps download test speeds.

Unplugged the adapter and went to the kitchen to try on a faster wireless laptop. Plugged in the adapter, again down stream from a GFCI, cabled to the computer, waited about 1 minute for the adapter to initialize, and again about 28-29 Mbps download test results. These were both Win 7 home premium machines.

Unplugged the adapter, and moved to the garage on two different outlets, also down stream from a GFCI, and cabled into a wireless Vista 32 home desktop computer. The initialize took about 2 minutes and I was off and running with 28-29 Mbps download speeds.

The wireless desktop units are fixed and the laptops get moved around the house but tend to be within 4-5 feet of an 120V outlet. I ordered 2 more immediately and will most likely get an additional 2 for 6 total because I was originally looking at the adapters for a smart TV application that I did not want to run wireless.

The house was built in 2000 and I know enough about wiring to know the home has a continuous neutral wire (the white one) running uninterrupted at the outlet level and that must be the wire the adapters use since they are two prong eliminating using the ground. I also oriented the adapters the same way in the event they did not have smarts to select the neutral wire.

The bottom line is all of my wireless computers achieved hard port connection speeds when attached to the internet via the Trendnet adapters. They are not as fast as a direct connect between computers because multi machine file transfers are clearly faster on the hard wired machines versus to a wireless machine running from the 120V adapter but who cares? All of the desktop wireless computers will be converted to the 120V adapter as I get more in.

If you live in a house that has wiring that has not been corrupted by a Do it yourself type (meaning a continuous neutral) , the adapters should work well on every outlet even on old 2 wire electrical

Cons: The adapters are not as fast as a direct cable to the router for machine to machine transfers. If you are moving gigabytes of data that may be a problem. For me, it is normally a non issue.

2 out of 5 eggsA BIG LIE

Pros: small
cheap
see other thoughts...

Cons: The ad about 500Mbp is a LIE!! The horrible thing that they write it even on a box! 500Mbp is a power line chip, but it has 10/100 Ethernet adapter inside, so they can do it 500Gbs over the grid - who cares if it will not run faster than 100Mbp to your PC!!

Other Thoughts: If your WiFi is strong use wifi, as N or AC are much faster. if you need a good distance with speeds that are consistent with 100Mbp(speed is reliable so far, that's why I've added one more egg), you can try this adapters. This speed is good enough for 1080p, but if you need file transfers and you got used to 1Gbs, that will be slow.
Although I believe it's unacceptable to lie in you ads.

5 out of 5 eggssix stars!

Pros: Simple to install and use. Works better than I expected.

Cons: Not yet.

Other Thoughts: This is my experiences: My router is on the first level of my home. My bedroom TV is on the second level, the farthest from the router. With the TPL-406E2K It's like the router is right next to the TV!
I've been using wireless extenders but the TPL-406E2K is much better.
I've just ordered two more so I can get my computers additional speed over the wireless WiFi I'm using now.

5 out of 5 eggsFast - just what I needed!

Pros: I got this to stream HD video to an HTPC. I had another brand that was rated at 200 Mbps, and it could not handle streaming the HD video. I would get a lot of stuttering and pixelation. Streaming video with this product has been flawless. I am very satisfied.

Easy set up. Just plug one unit into an outlet near your router and connect to router via ethernet, then plug the other unit to an outlet near your computer and connect via ethernet, and you are up in running.

My source is in the basement, and the HTPC is on the ground floor. Zero connection issues.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: It's small. It leaves your other outlet on a typical 2-outlet plug available for use.
