3 out of 5 eggsIt works ok

Pros: I got this for a friend. Neither one of us could get the wireless to work right so she just uses it wired now.

Cons: Could not set up the wireless for some reason.

2 out of 5 eggsOnly last a few years.

Pros: When they work, they're ok.

Cons: Wireless only lasts a few years.

Other Thoughts: I've gone through two of these. They last a couple of years and then the wireless starts having connection and speed problems.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsGood with OpenWRT

Pros: Bought to use as a bridge to give my xbox, blu-Ray player, etc. wireless access in the basement without moving my cable modem and wireless router. Works well for this purpose.

Cons: Took a while to get it up and running. Insufficient flash able memory space to run a GUI on OpenWRT, so make sure you're comfy with using command line for Linux networking config (... I'm not. Learning experience for me, but works now.)

Other Thoughts: All in all a decent buy. Worked for intended use.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat value

Pros: Great value for the price. Installation and configuration were very easy. Wireless range is adequate for my house, but the speed does drop off with the distance. Measured idle power consumption at around 1.3 W. Very impressive.

Cons: None, if you have reasonable expectations given the price.

Other Thoughts: Know what you want and need. I'm sure you can find a router with better wireless coverage. Just not at this price and power consumption.

2 out of 5 eggsDid I get lemon? It does not work

Pros: If you are tech savvy and know how to live without DHCP, this may work. Wireless signal is okay for what it's worth if you can get it work.

Cons: DHCP function does work at all. Maybe I got a lemon. Re-writing firmware did not solve the issue
You have to assign IP address, gateway, DNS manually to make it work. I have 11 different machine with different O.S. This router cannot detect any of my machine.

Other Thoughts: I bought this because this was advertised as wrt-compatible, beware, this is NOT DD-WRT compatible router.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Anonymous,

Sorry for any inconveniences due to typo of DD-wrt advertised on Newegg. Instead it’s an Openwrt compatible. It’s very likely that it can be a defective unit on DHCP, and we would like to troubleshoot with you, if possible. Please email me at adrian@trendnet.com with “Newegg TEW-712BR” in the subject line and I will contact you immediately to assist. I look forward to your reply and restoring your faith in TRENDnet soon.

Warmest regards,

Adrian

1 out of 5 eggsNO dd-wrt support

Pros: It didn't burn my house down...

Cons: This router is NOT a dd-wrt supported device. To see that, all you have to do is go to http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database and type in TrendNet TEW-712. You'll get no results.

Other Thoughts: Save yourself the significant pain of dealing with Newegg support and avoid this router at all costs if you're interested in dd-wrt compatibility.

3 out of 5 eggsWould not work properly with OpenWrt

Pros: Works properly with original firmware

Cons: Short range
Did not work properly once flashed with open-source firmware

Other Thoughts: I bought this as a cheap OpenWrt device. After I flashed it with the open-source image from the manufacturers website, wireless connections would drop out every few minutes.
After I re-flashed with the manufacturer's original firmware the wireless worked properly again.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works and it's cheap.

Cons: Sometimes its hard to get connected to the wifi. I cannot get the firewall config to let me set up and get working DMZ or port forwarding. The configuration is right but it's not working. I did test to verify the issue is in the router.
