4 out of 5 eggsWorks surprisingly well

This review is from: TRENDnet TPL-308E2K Powerline 200 AV Nano Adapter Kit Up to 200Mbps

Pros: Simplicity... plug & play.

Cons: None I can think of.

Other Thoughts: I use them to connect a SlingBox in my living room to my network on the 2nd floor. Was going to install Cat-5E cable but the sale price of these were too appealing, so I decided to try them. They stream SD video just fine, no pauses or stuttering. Haven't tried any Hi-Def sources. The TrendNet utility claims 127 Mbps between the two adapters. My house has typical 16-gauge copper wiring.

3 out of 5 eggsIt works - slowly.

This review is from: TRENDnet TPL-308E2K Powerline 200 AV Nano Adapter Kit Up to 200Mbps

Pros: If you need to get an Ethernet signal to a otherwise inaccessible area, the Trendnet TPL-308E2K is a dead-simple option. At its easiest, just plug one unit into an outlet near a switch or router, and plug the other where service is needed. Done.

Well, almost. Plugging one unit into a surge suppressor drops the connection speed to under 4Mbps, and the connection itself is prone to dropouts. If either of the units is connected to an AFCI breaker, performance and connection reliability also drop. GFCI outlets did not seem to cause problems.

At their best (adjacent outlets in the same room), I measured sustained 21Mbps connection speeds. More typical speed was 7-12Mbps. Not great, but better than nothing.

The plugs encrypt communications, so your neighbors won't be spying on your internet.

Cons: Trendnet advertises a maximum connection speed of 200Mbps. This in itself is somewhat misleading, as they are counting both upstream and downstream connection speed - the highest theoretical speed one sees in a single direction is 100Mbps.

Note the "theoretical". The adapters have a management utility that reports link speed. Like the specifications, it adds both up and downstream speeds. Even so, actual measurements showed lower connection speeds still. Count on real-world performance in the 10Mbps range for outlets on different circuits. As noted above, AHCI breakers play havoc with the connection quality, so plan accordingly.

Other Thoughts: Changing the encryption key from the default (a simple process of holding down the 'sync' button) is certainly recommended. The signals can be (faintly) transmitted outside your circuit box.

The best use I found for these adapters was that I could get a signal through an outside outlet far beyond the reach of a wireless connection. Working outside on a sunny day is easier.

1 out of 5 eggsTPL-308E2K - Connection Dropping out intermittently

This review is from: TRENDnet TPL-308E2K Powerline 200 AV Nano Adapter Kit Up to 200Mbps

Pros: none

Cons: TPL-308E2K - Connection Dropping out intermittently

Other Thoughts: I am in Canada.

I also own 2 Linksys power line adapters these adapters have never-given me any problems.

I Purchased 2 sets of Trendnet Powerline adapters on the boxing week in Dec 2013. There were 2 adapters in each box. I am having troubles with my internet connection ever since. When I boot up my PC every single time there is no internet connection, sometimes i have to wait 5 minutes or sometimes i have to take the adapter out of the plug or reset it. Even after doing the resetting these adapters go offline intermittently. Both sets have the same problems. I have upgraded the firmware as well but that did not help.

There are no unnecessary appliances plugged to my electrical lines. My house does not have any AFCI breakers, or GFCI outlets. I have switched back to Linksys powerline adapters and have been using them at the same location where Trendnet Powerline adapters were. Linksys power line adapters are working flawlessly at the same place. Trendnet Powerline adapters are useless do not buy.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy ethernet

This review is from: TRENDnet TPL-308E2K Powerline 200 AV Nano Adapter Kit Up to 200Mbps

Pros: Product if very easy to set up and comes with everything you need. Just plugged them in and they worked. I have another pair of powerline adapters and they did not interfere as far as I can tell.

The plugs are not polarized so you can plug them in upside down if needed.

Speeds are decent enough to stream Netflix or movies over your network.

Indicator lights are not obnoxiously bright.

Cons: Hard to find any cons for what someone would use these for but the Ethernet cables are a bit short for my application so I had to use another.

Other Thoughts: There is a relink button on the bottom just in case you need to rebind them together but so far I haven't needed to do this.

If you have a big house and wifi gets diminished then these things seem to work much better for me. I even tried hooking a router set as an APN to extend my wifi with no problem.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for what they are

This review is from: TRENDnet TPL-308E2K Powerline 200 AV Nano Adapter Kit Up to 200Mbps

Pros: Gets the data to those hard to reach areas with almost zero work.

Cons: Nothing beats a good Cat6A or Cat7 shielded wire for transfer speeds. These are no substitute for the real deal.

These things are no faster than USB 2.0 specs for transfer speeds so if you want file transfer bandwidth use gigabit Ethernet and run real cables.

Other Thoughts: I am not a fan of these things.
I would use these under certain circumstances:
If i needed a connection past a barrier such as metal or concrete where wireless is less than useful and if the connection only supported Ethernet.
I would install them as a temporary solution to dragging an Ethernet cable down a hallway and/or out in the open.
If at all possible I would run proper Ethernet cable under a crawlspace or in an attic and install a real jack and use patch cables.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

This review is from: TRENDnet TPL-308E2K Powerline 200 AV Nano Adapter Kit Up to 200Mbps

Pros: I love these things. They are so convenient, and for most applications and uses they are more than enough. Even for gaming on my PS4 they worked way better than my wireless N wifi.

Cons: 10/100 port... but it still works for most applications

2 out of 5 eggsUnstable connection, low signal

This review is from: TRENDnet TPL-308E2K Powerline 200 AV Nano Adapter Kit Up to 200Mbps

Pros: Compact and neat, have good/average/low connection quality indicator (not just connection on/off).

Cons: Unfortunately connection quality is low. Connection quality indicator is red (low) when connecting adjusent rooms (router to TV - which is my setup). While testing, I was able to get 'good' signal only withing the same room.

The most annoying problem is unstable connection in this setup. Device tends to drop/reset connection from time to time and recovery takes 20+ seconds. TV just drops any stream it was playing at the time after a short timeout. This usually happened 2-3 times times per standard film length (~2 hours).

I have another powerline kit (TP-LINK PA210) - and it works on the same setup (router to TV) without disconnects. Unfortunately it looks somewhat bulky/ugly - and this TPL-308 was intended to be a prettier replacement :(

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Mhael,

We are sorry to hear that you are having issues with the units. Please ensure that you avoid AFCI breakers as they can degrade power line performance significantly. You can also look for and find sources of interference near the power line products and try to locate the devices away from them as much as possible. Since you are using comparable Home Plug AV devices without any issues it may also be a hardware problem. We would be happy to RMA the unit for warranty services to rule this out. Please email Adrian@trendnet.com and we can have someone help you with submitting an RMA. Please include your contact information and a link to this review.

5 out of 5 eggsA+ for Ethernet connected netcam placement.

This review is from: TRENDnet TPL-308E2K Powerline 200 AV Nano Adapter Kit Up to 200Mbps

Pros: This is neat, for reference purposes this is a little bigger than a 4 AA Battery Charger; it’s much smaller than powerline adapters I’m accustomed to.

The latest generations of powerline adapters have gotten much better; much of the quirkiness is gone. Previous obstacles like adjacent electrical panels, i.e. Bedroom arc fault/ remainder of the house aren’t the problem they once were.

Look at these adapters as more or less as Ethernet access points; with the power line the actual cord. You plug one into a wall plug close connecting it to its source with an Ethernet cable – and – its mate where needed. Sync them and otherwise impractical applications are easily accomplished.

My favorite application is remote access video monitoring. I’m constantly amazed by this coupling, its sheer technologic magic. You can put an Ethernet provisioned camera virtually anywhere there’s an outlet. Whether it’s a pet or a clandestine operation, this takes camera placement to a new level.

Cons: I wouldn’t recommend using this for demanding applications, i.e., remote access point placement. This is function specific, for audiovisual applications and online gaming.

The unit doesn’t have an AC plug-in on its front like many competitors.

Other Thoughts: I’d classify this as user friendly (advice), buy two sets - because in the near distant future - an exact compatibility match may not be available, i.e., adding netcams. Keep in mind this will support up to 3 overlapping devises per electrical system. For those requiring greater expandability than 3 overlapping devise, the next model up will accommodate up to 16 overleaping (nodes) devises - plus - it’s faster.

No more drilling holes, crawling and running painstaking cables afterward being committed to that place, put anything compatible anywhere there’s an outlet; you have the luxury of being able to change your mind without giving a second thought of what hassles changes involve. Furthermore, its built-in simplicity is wonderful.

I’ve assigned my rating based upon bang for the buck (value judgment). At the current street price, this is an extremely good deal for anyone who has uses which fall within its limitations.

5 out of 5 eggsGame Changer

This review is from: TRENDnet TPL-308E2K Powerline 200 AV Nano Adapter Kit Up to 200Mbps

Pros: This device simply works as advertised at the advertised speed. It is as close to plug and play as devices get. I used these to extend my wireless network with a spare router I have.

This is how I used them: I plugged the first unit into the wall and connected it to my living room router via CAT5. The second unit I connected in my bedroom and connected it to my spare router via CAT5 and viola. Now I have the same speed and strength on my wireless network over my entire house. All for the low cost $24.99, an amazing immediate solution.

* My routers were pre-configured with my preferred security settings. *

Cons: - They don't cook breakfast

Other Thoughts: I have a brother-in-law who has the same issue with his larger house, I will be providing a set of these as a gift along with a spare router.

5 out of 5 eggsTRENDnet TPL-308E2K Powerline 200 AV Nano Adapter Kit Up to 200Mbps

This review is from: TRENDnet TPL-308E2K Powerline 200 AV Nano Adapter Kit Up to 200Mbps

Pros: Very Affordable
Plug and Play
They actually work

Cons: I can not come up with one con.

Other Thoughts: When I received these powerline adapters I took them straight to work to put them to the test. I have to be honest I was not very optimistic . I have had bad experiences with these types of products in the past. Well i can honestly say I was very surprised at how well the technology has come in the last 7 years since I first was exposed to products like this. Inside my work office we could not get them not to work. What I found out was as long as they are sending signal through the same breaker box they would work. I had them plugged into power strips, different circuits and one guy I work with took them home and used them from his house to his garage and said they worked perfectly. We usually got between 30mbs to 85mbs depending on how much it had to transmit the signal through. Going through different circuits obviously will dropped the speed down. I would also like to mention they will not work through battery backup systems. I work for a small IPS and we were so impressed that we bought bunch for the office for when we run into impossible cable run jobs. So if running cat5 cable is out of the question these little guys are definitely a solid option. You are not going to get ground breaking speeds out of them but they will get you connectivity, decent through put and very respectable pings. I would recommend these to anyone being they are simply plug and play and work pretty much flawlessly
