5 out of 5 eggsNice Router

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-812DRU V2 AC1750 Dual Band Wireless Router - 4 Gigabit port, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: Best wireless speed I've ever had. Never drops the connection. This with the TEW 800MB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833156455 bridge works very nicely in my entertainment area at near wired speeds.

Cons: Range
bought another brand range extender and now i'm golden

1 out of 5 eggsEasily worst router ever.

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-812DRU V2 AC1750 Dual Band Wireless Router - 4 Gigabit port, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: I can't think of any at all

Cons: *Have to reboot device every 3 hours.
*Device drops signal if put under heavy load
*I tried the open source OS and even underclocked the cpu since it was getting super hot. Made it worse.
*Drops packets when you are 5 feet away with full signal.
*No "best settings" anywhere to be found
*No dlna support
*5gz light rarely makes an appearance/broadcast (seems to only send that signal out when it wants)
*Can't even stream netflix.
*Even though the box and their advertisments say they support Open Source, small print says you void your warranty if you load ddwrt.
*This thing drops packets, no matter what you set for tcp congestion, no matter what you do.

Other Thoughts: How is there no consumer protection against spending $100 on an empty box? Trendnet, you guys are crooks. I have read through more than 25 posts just like mine on that other online store and here on Newegg.

3 out of 5 eggsFast, when it works

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-812DRU V2 AC1750 Dual Band Wireless Router - 4 Gigabit port, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: nice price, good reviews on pcmag site. Wireless on it is very fast. Interface is very simple to use.

Cons: It keeps failing. Drops packets like mad.
Port Forwarding did not seem to work.
Remote Admin didn't work.

Other Thoughts: Bought this router based on reviews I saw online about it. Was excited to get it. I'm a network admin by trade, and have setup many routers. I upgraded from a Linksys WRT54G because I wanted the AC speed this thing offered.

It was working great for a few months. However, I was never able to get the port forwarding to work properly. I was trying to get it to forward port 3389 to the IP of my local PC, so I could remote desktop from work to my Home PC. I set it up according to instructions, but it just wouldn't pass the data. I also setup the remote admin per the instructions, and the same thing, it simply just didn't work. I've set these feature up on the Linksys and cisco routers, and they had no issues.

I let it sit for a while. Then I disconnected the whole thing, and just used my cablemodem's features for a few months. I decided to give this router another try. I reset it to factory defaults. Plugged it into my cablemodem, which had DHCP set to give out and IP. ran the wizard. Set my PC to DHCP, and everything seemed fine. Setup my server IP, and another workstation. Went about my normal business and 30 min later, the thing stops working. No ping replies. reboot router and it comes back. works for a few hours and then boom, it stops working again.

So, I disconnected it, and it's sitting in my drawer. I think I got a bad device. It works GREAT when it works.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello John,

We have recently released a firmware update for the router that should help. Please update the router with the latest firmware update found on our website. Please ensure you perform a factory reset after the firmware update to finalize the process. We have extensively tested port forwarding and have not run into any issues. Please make sure the devices you are forwarding the ports to are using this router as their gateway. If you continue to have this issue please email Adrian@trendnet.com and we’ll have someone assist you as soon as possible. Please include a link to this review.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks well, when it works

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-812DRU V2 AC1750 Dual Band Wireless Router - 4 Gigabit port, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: Dual band, very fast, decent range ( I can go down two flights of stairs and off the property to smoke, and still be connected to my router) and plenty of configuration options for those who are savvy enough to know how to work them. Looks sleek, fits on a bookshelf, and doesn't have dozens of antennas sticking out from it, which is something I definitely like.

Cons: I came back from an extended vacation and work trip, and hadn't used the router in a good 5 months. I plugged it back in after being boxed up, got it up and running, and started to notice that it would not stay connected to the internet. It constantly required a reboot. I would renew the IP address and that would work for a bit, but after about 10 times, it required a reboot to start working again. After the 20th reboot, I was no longer even able to access the routers page.

I checked to see if there might have been a firmware update, and there was, so I downloaded it. After several failed attempts to update the firmware, I was able to finally get the firmware updated without the router shutting off. Unfortunately, the update did nothing to solve the problem of connectivity. After some discussion with the help desk online, they told me to send it in for "possible" warranty replacement. I have to pay for the shipping, as well as providing everything that came in the box, otherwise they will not even consider replacing, and finally I decided to just buy a new router and take this one as a loss.

Other Thoughts: I really liked this router. It fit well on my bookshelf, hidden from sight, and gave me a good 6 months of lighting fast internet. Unfortunately, after what I went through with the warranty and the issue with updating the firmware, I feel horrible for recommending this product to all of my friends.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Clinton,

We are sorry to hear that you had an issue with the router. The original box and other materials are not required for warranty services. It just needs to be packaged properly for safe delivery. We recommend sending in the unit and power supplies when sending in a unit for warranty services so we can replace both. If you would still like to submit a warranty claim on the unit please email Adrian@trendnet.com and we will have someone assist you as soon as possible. Please include a link to this review.

1 out of 5 eggsWorse router ever

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-812DRU V2 AC1750 Dual Band Wireless Router - 4 Gigabit port, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: none

Cons: This router was constantly having issues rebooting after ever change and spotty wireless configuration. Today it says there was a problem with my cable modem. I rebooted all of them several times and still same problem. Plugged in a machine directly to the modem and no problems to Internet. Plugged in my older n router...no issues. Returning this now.

5 out of 5 eggsReliable router

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-812DRU V2 AC1750 Dual Band Wireless Router - 4 Gigabit port, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: Easy configuration web interface and strong signal

Cons: No wall mount

Other Thoughts: I had this router for 5 months and still haven't rebooted it. I have strong signal in all places in my townhouse. This is by far the best wireless router I've ever had. I have owned Dlink and Linksys.

1 out of 5 eggsTRENDon't

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-812DRU V2 AC1750 Dual Band Wireless Router - 4 Gigabit port, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: Price?
I now have a reason to re-finish my walls now that I've punched so many holes in them from trying to get this to preform as advertised.

Cons: Coverage is spotty, if you can get it. I purchased it for my apartment, and made the mistake of suggesting it to my friend for their house based on all of the high reviews. I have issues getting speeds above 54 Mbps when I'm holding it in 1 hand, and my laptop is on my lap. Customer support blamed me for the poor performance, not updating my drivers and having a dual boot of Linux and Windows.

Other Thoughts: Needless to say, I'm not going to be purchasing a TRENDnet device anytime soon. This was more of a letdown than Windows Vista.
