2 out of 5 eggsTEW-812DRU failing

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-812DRU V2 AC1750 Dual Band Wireless Router - 4 Gigabit port, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: When it worked, I was impressed. My Netflix connection is at HD levels all the time, and loaded almost instantly.
Good speeds on my home wired network, and even gave me satisfactory WI-FI on my Samsung Note 3. Unfortunately not very good range over the previous router I was using.

Cons: What to say. If I knew why the internet connection just drops out arbitrarily, I would/could troubleshoot it. I do not find out until I go to a site, and get the page can't display. Check in my control panel and see the dreaded red X.
Two calls to TrendNet, and other than telling me to reset the router, I was told to return it.

Other Thoughts: I appreciate the ability to connect instantly with TrendNet technical. Very refreshing.

3 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-812DRU V2 AC1750 Dual Band Wireless Router - 4 Gigabit port, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: * High transfers for wired connections.
* Reliable device, it hasn't failed.
* A lot of features.

Cons: Very slowed wireless connections for my iphones(models :4 and 4S). So every time I connect 2 or more wireless devices like two iphone my internet connections drops from ~30 Mbps to <3Mbps, I use speed test as a guidance. I have to reboot the router so all wireless devices can get the higher bandwidth. I already upgrade to firmware to the latest based on trendnet website. So if there is a setting that you guys know that I should change so both iphones get a high bandwidth, I would highly appreciated. If not I am have to replace it with a better router (not this model).

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsPC Mag meh

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-812DRU V2 AC1750 Dual Band Wireless Router - 4 Gigabit port, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: Very easy setup
GHz LAN
Guest Network

Cons: Poor 5GHz performance
Waste of USB 3.0

Other Thoughts: I started with the V1, and performance was generally quite good. Bought ultimately for the touted streaming capability, which is where it fell down. Blamed it on USB 2.0 - only did 4, 6MB/s at best. The Egg graciously exchanged for the V2 since out of V1. V2 had poorer wireless, and the USB 3.0 was almost identical speed to the 2.0. Aarg!!

Next time skip PC Mag review, go with smallnetbuilder(dot)com. 1200 is the sweet spot.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Stewart,

I am so sorry and quite surprised to hear that 5GHz performance is poor. I am curious what kind of 5GHz AC and N clients do you have and what applications were used to experience poor performance? Does 2.4GHz work better? What kind of storage and application is running to gain 6MB/s throughput via the USB 3.0 port? I would be happy to get you up and running smoothly. Please email me directly at adrian@trendnet.com ASAP with “Amazon TEW-812DRU v2 Review” in the subject line. I look forward to your reply soon.

Warmest regards,

Adrian

5 out of 5 eggsAbsolutely amazing

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-812DRU V2 AC1750 Dual Band Wireless Router - 4 Gigabit port, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: The best of the best. By far the last router I will ever have to buy. The dual band works great, set up is a breeze with the software provided, and the signal strength is pretty solid.

Cons: I would really like a couple more ports on the back. I have it set up in my livingroom with a PS3, PS4, Roku and a PC Media center connected to it, and I also have my PC in my bedroom hardline connected in.

Other Thoughts: I really like the design a lot. I don't like seeing antennae sticking out of the side or the back, or too many crazy lights on the front. Now if only ISP's would get with the program and actually give us the speeds these units can work at, that would be great.

1 out of 5 eggsPerformance is sub par

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-812DRU V2 AC1750 Dual Band Wireless Router - 4 Gigabit port, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: It was easy to set up, and get everything connected. The user interface is OK but not great. The wired connections have worked flawlessly

Cons: This unit gives me completely unreliable wireless. I will come home to notice that the wireless signal has dropped out due to devices I have that do not auto-reconnect. I am constantly having to re-set this router. The first month I would get speeds in the 11/12 Mbps download range.. now I'm lucky if I can get 2Mbps. the last speed test run I got 2.33 Mbps down and 835 Kbps upload. My ipad 2 also barely gets 3 bars of range when on the 2nd floor of the house (router is in the room right below it)

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Fuzz,

I apologize for this router not working as promised. If you have devices that don’t support auto-connect, you probably have to re-connect when connection is no longer available. You can double check on the latest driver which might support auto-connect. As far as 2.4GHz download speed, I would suggest to download and install InSSIDer via the following link, http://www.metageek.net/support/downloads/, and to locate the least congested channel to configure. Also, I would highly recommend to choose 20/40Mhz channel width for possible higher speed. If these don’t help please feel free to email me directly at adrian@trendnet.com with “Newegg TEW-812DRU review” in the subject line and I will respond immediately to assist. I look forward to your reply soon.

Warmest regards,

Adrian

1 out of 5 eggsbad news all the way around

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-812DRU V2 AC1750 Dual Band Wireless Router - 4 Gigabit port, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: Setup was fairly easy, although it had to be run a few times before it was finally connected.

Cons: Unreliable, to say the least. After setting up and throwing away the box the next morning, it began requiring a daily reset, sometimes more. After multiple calls and emails with TrendNet and its various levels of technicians that consumed many hours over several weeks, we had reset the firmware, downloaded new firmware, changed the settings, and anything else the technicians told us to do. Nonetheless, the problem persisted. We just want our money back.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy Setup and Fantastic Speed

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-812DRU V2 AC1750 Dual Band Wireless Router - 4 Gigabit port, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: Very easy to setup. I have my whole family's computers connected to 2.4GHz wireless and mobile phones connected to 5GHz wireless. The speed are fantastic on both wireless 2.4GHz and 5GHz. The USB 3.0 option gives me easy to stream my video thru network.

Cons: Nothing so far.

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-812DRU V2 AC1750 Dual Band Wireless Router - 4 Gigabit port, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: Awesome speed and great range!

Cons: Slow processing times when changing settings, even with the updated firmware.

Other Thoughts: Like the USB NAS option if you have an external USB drive you want to plug in and share on the network.

3 out of 5 eggsGood product overall, but requires regular restarts

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-812DRU V2 AC1750 Dual Band Wireless Router - 4 Gigabit port, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: A good product overall, very easy to setup, no problems connecting my wireless printer with WPS.

Cons: Once in 3-6 days both 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi signals disappear forcing you to restart the device. This became a deal breaker for me and I'm returning it.

Another small complaint is external HDD read/write speed, shamefully slow for USB 3.0. The fastest I got was about 20-25MB/s when copying a large file over 1GB Ethernet connection.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Mstone,
