Overview

The Powerline 500 AV Nano Adapter Kit with Built-In Outlet, model TPL-407E2K, uses existing electrical lines to create a secure high speed network. Connect the first adapter to your network and plug the second adapter into an outlet on your electrical system for instant high speed network access. The compact form factor saves space and offers an additional electrical outlet, built into the front of the housing to power computers and other devices. A noise filter maintains optimum connection speeds when devices such as computers, televisions, and gaming consoles create electrical background noise.

This adapter automatically connects to other TRENDnet Powerline AV adapters with no installation required—TRENDnet recommends pressing the "Sync" button to automatically change default encryption keys. Use up to eight adapters to network devices in different rooms without running new cabling. Power Save mode reduces power consumption by up to 80%. Quality of Service technology prioritizes video, audio, and online gaming. LED displays convey device status for easy troubleshooting. Advanced 128-bit AES encryption secures your network. This adapter is ideal for use in buildings that interfere with wireless networking signals.

1 out of 5 eggsDisconnects Often

Pros: Speed

Cons: Unreliable, disconnects 1-2 times per day.

Other Thoughts: I would not recommend this product.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing an issue with the TK-407E2k. You can try different outlets and disconnecting electronics around the units to see if you can identify a device that may be causing interference. Try to relocate the unit or the device to see if that helps. Avoid using GFI outlets and outlets on AFCI breakers as they can also impact your Powerline network. Typically this type of issue is caused by interference. If you cannot find a source it may be a hardware issue. Please email adrian@trendnet.com and we will have someone assist you as soon as possible. Please include a link to this review.

Regards,

Adrian

1 out of 5 eggsGreat Specifications but Sad Performance

Pros: Has built in AC outlet.

Cons: Dismal performance: I bought this to replace Trendnet TPL-307E2K bought from Newegg.com 2/1/13. I expected superior speed since the TPL-407E2K was supposedly capable of 500 Mbps compared to the 200 Mbps of the TPL-307E2K. Instead of superior performance the TPL-407E2K was inferior @ 10 Mbps compared to the TPL-307E2K's 25 Mbps in the same placement. User's guide & called Trendnet tech support were consulted. No remedy. I replaced the new TPL-407E2K with the old TPL-307E2K & performance returned to 25 Mbps. Next step RMA with Newegg.

Other Thoughts: I called TRENDnet technical support. To my surprise the only menu option was to select English language. Apparently the same call center (India. Good command of English and only mild accent.) supports for all their products (routers versus powerline adapters, etc). After explaining that the new TPL-407E2K with 500 Mbps specifications was only getting 10 Mbps and that the older TPL-307E2K with 200 Mbps specification was getting 25 Mbps in the exact same placement the call center person promptly read a response blaming my internet connection and home wiring. When I explained again that could not be the problem since the older TPL-307E2K could perform adequately in the exact same placement she read off the same response. It seems TRENDnets technical support consists of a call center supplied with responses blaming environment of the product rather than people trained to help with technical solutions or replacement of defective products.

4 out of 5 eggsWould Highly Recommend

Pros: - I get 100Mbps from connecting upstairs to down stairs

- Works 10x better then wireless

Cons: - This thing is rated for 500Mbps, but it only has a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet connection.

- It will drop connection every so often. It reconnects within seconds, so this isn't a big issue.

Other Thoughts: - You need to play around with plugging it into different power plugs. Even in the same room, on the same circuit, I get different speeds.

- Do not plug anything to demanding into this outlet. Avoid connecting power strips to it. It will heat up the box and drop more often. I just plug my router into it.

- I have 3 of these set up in my home. Works amazing. Before I could only have my router in the office in the side of the house. This allowed me to move my router to the center of my home.

- If you are looking for true 500Mbps, look for the same brand with gigabyte Ethernet connector. Though, you will never truly reach the 500Mbps advertised speeds.

Pros: Easy to install. plug play and run. Nothing else needed very impressed with these gems and may buy more just as an incase.

Other Thoughts: Comes with software so i thought i was going to have to use and configure these before deploying them. Nope they just hooked up to each other and ran. Very very impressed with these

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works from hub/switch in first floor living room to basement via power line. Washer and dryer next to computer do not interfere with it. Replaces a wifi connection that was barely usable. (thru a wood floor covered by slate, then thru a stone planter, a La-z-boy and across the living room.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Not sure if washer/dryer are on the same circuit/phase.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far, so good. 100-187Mb/sec

Pros: Plug and play. Getting 100-187Mb/sec. They are two rooms apart and on different circuits in my home. Makes XBMC running on my Zotac nano-PC much more reliable playing content from my NAS versus flakey Wi-Fi.

Cons: A bit pricey, which is why I took off one egg.

Other Thoughts: The included application is pretty handy. It allows you to see the installed devices. They don't tell you that when the devices are in sleep mode, their transfer rate drops to 11Mb/s (according to the app). But that's not an issue since they are not being used. They are probably just pinging each other. As soon as they wake up, they are back to full speed.
