2 out of 5 eggsTake yer chances.

Pros: Well, if it had worked, I'd assume it would have been an upgrade from my current adapter. If you get one that works I'm sure it would be an upgrade from a USB 2.0 wireless adapter, but mine didn't, so it wasn't.

Cons: -Not plug and play
Utilities for these kinds of products rob speed and eat up CPU/RAM and really just shouldn't exist.

-Didn't function.
I tested on two PCs with USB3 mobo ports. On one, the utility wouldn't even open (Windows 7 Pro Ultimate 64-Bit) and the light on the adapter didn't light up on either PC.

Other Thoughts: Waiting on an RMA. Wish it would have worked, but oh well. USB 3.0 technology probably shouldn't be bought cheaply but I like to roll the dice from time to time. Sometimes I hit a home run, sometimes I strike out. Whatabummer.

Manufacturer Response:

We are sorry you had this experience with the TEW-805UB. The LED should blink even if it isn’t connected to a network.
With the adapter connected to a computer please check your Device Manager to see if the adapter is being detected at all. Press the Windows key + R and type in devmgmt.msc to open the Device Manager. It should be listed under the Network Adapters category as AC1200 Dual Band USB Adapter. If you see it listed under Other Devices with an exclamation point, please right click on it and uninstall it. After it has been uninstalled, reinstall the utility from the CD.

If the driver fails to load or the unit just doesn’t appear in the Device Manager at all we would recommend following through on the RMA for warranty services. If you submitted an RMA request at please email with your contact information and a link to this review and we will take care of it as soon as possible.

5 out of 5 eggsAnd it really really works!

Pros: Had an internal PCI wireless card which was great. Sadly it cooked. SO, I wanted something simple and easy. This is it. I've notice how laptop wireless seems to be the first thing to go. When the internal wireless card went out, I figured, why make brain surgery out of it. This works great, there are no flickers or jitter with streaming video content, and if it goes out, yank it and put in another. Simple

Cons: None that I can see.

Other Thoughts: Who says you need a truck when bicycle will do?

1 out of 5 eggsBAD

Pros: It's got a pretty box.

Cons: Caused lag in my games. Called Technical Support, spoke to someone whom I could barely understand his English. He told me to try 2.4ghz, I told him that is not why I purchased this adapter. He told me it could be interference. I very seriously doubt interference is the issue, because I live in a rural area, with the only other wireless devices are connected 2.4ghz. I will be purchasing another adapter, rest assured it won't be Trendnet.

Manufacturer Response:

3 out of 5 eggsTrendNet Scores again, but...

Pros: *Great Connectivity on 2.4Ghz Band
*Utility Software works, simple and not trying to do to much.
just gets the job done - connecting you to the network.

Cons: *Somewhat wide... eats USB ports that are in close proximity
*Doesn't work well at all on 5Ghz Band - drops frequently.
*USB 3.0 connectivity makes zero difference in network performance.

Other Thoughts: Tested on two PC's. My self built AMD 8350 based machine & a newly purchased Asus X502CA-HPD1104I-P Laptop with USB 3.0 ports for my fiances daughter. = 21.4Mbps Down / 2.98 Up - respectable
10ft from router via inSSIDer on desktop = -45db strength
Outside in front yard via Asus Laptop roughly 65ft away = 68db

Over 5Ghz, the connectivity was very spotty. Same result over USB 2 or 3. However, switching back to 2.4 things worked well. But even then, this adapter was not as strong as the integrated wifi in the Asus or HP laptops.

I can't say I recommend this adapter for 5Ghz networks. Now, it could be that it just doesn't care much for my Buffalo AirStation. However, the AirStation didn't have any problems at all communicating with other 5Ghz equipment I own. Odd. But since it is marketed as an AC Adapter I just can't recommend it. But it is a good effort.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsEconomically priced and easy setup with fair to good performance

Pros: -2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n and 5 GHz 802.11a/n/ac with up to 867 Mbps Wireless AC or up to or 300 Mbps advertised wireless speeds.
-Backwards compatible with IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11b, and IEEE 802.11a networks.
-Multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) technology which should allow for expanded coverage.
-Windows XP (32/64-bit) through Windows 8 (32/64-bit) compatibility.
-USB 3.0 connection which should equate to greater I/O bandwidth and higher speeds.
-Protected Setup (WPS) button and nonobtrusive status light.
-3-year limited warranty.
-Very reasonably priced.
-Very easy and quick installation using the TRENDnet utility (see utility cons below).

During my testing, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signal strength was consistently at 80% or above when the adapter was placed at less than approximately 45 feet from my Netgear AC1200 capable Gigabit wireless router. However, signal strength degraded quickly at distances greater than 45 to 55 feet, and was less than 30% by approximately 65-70 feet. TEW-805UB in door coverage is advertised at up to 100 meters (330 feet). USB 3.0, 5 GHz connection speeds were 150-175 Mbps and 2.4 GHz connection speeds were 80-110 Mbps when tested at approximately 40-45 feet from my router.

The adapter never lost connectivity during testing when the adapter was placed at less than approximately 45 feet from my wireless router.

Cons: The adapter is a bit bulky and could easily block access to adjoining ports. This problem could be easily addressed with a USB 3.0 extension cable, but an extension cable was not included with my TEW-805UB package.

It appears that the TRENDnet utility is necessary for the adapter to work; I could not get the adapter to work properly by only installing the drivers. Acknowledging that the utility works well, such utilities can cause problems and/or conflicts. Additionally, it was not possible to connect with the utility without creating a profile.

I was not able to obtain advertised maximal wireless speeds or advertised maximal coverage range.

Please also see other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: All said and done, I have mixed opinions about the TEW-805UB. That is, the TEW-805UB is a slightly bulky AC1200 dual band wireless USB 3.0 adapter that is very reasonably priced at less than 40 dollars, very easy to setup and configure using the included setup utility and drivers, and includes a generous 3-year limited warranty. In comparison, this adapter performs better than my N600 wireless dual band USB 2.0 adapters and was on par with a few AC1200 adapters that I have tested.

In contrast, the package should ship with a USB 3.0 extension cable, installation without the utility should be possible, and I was not able to obtain anywhere close to the advertised maximal wireless speeds or advertised maximal coverage range.

In fairness, maximal capabilities are seldom obtainable, individual findings may vary greatly based on factors such as hardware and environment, and I was not able to test the TEW-805UB on a paired AC1200 TRENDnet wireless router. Equally, while my Netgear paired AC1200 adapter has greater speed and distance performance, the cost was double that of the TEW-805UB and it only included a 1-year limited warranty. I was torn between a rating of 3 and 4 and given that 3.5 was not an option, I chose a rating of 4 based on product features, ease of setup, warranty and cost.

So when would I recommend this adapter – For users with an AC1200 Gigabit wireless router that are in need of economic performance gains above that which a typical N600 wireless dual band adapter can offer, and for an environment where the adapter will be no more than 50 feet from the wireless router.

Disclosure: I am not paid by, subsidiaries, partners, and/or vendors to test products or write product reviews. I am provided with sample products which I may or may not be required to return to Newegg. I make every effort to test products under real world and end-user conditions, and to report my individual experiences in a respectful and fair manner.

5 out of 5 eggsI'm impressed

Pros: This thing must have a really powerful antenna in it. I'm totally impressed by the signal strength I'm getting with it. I've had at least 5 USB adapters in the last few years and this one is top notch. Windows has been reporting 300Mbps since I installed it and it feels to me like I'm wired into my home network.

I usually hate utilities that come with these things and only install the driver. I installed the utility with this and it's really not too bad. It's simple and well layed out.

Cons: The adapter looks cheaply made and is rather large. I've installed this into a USB port in the back of the computer since it's too big to have it plugged into the front and risk hitting it with my knee or something. I would assume it's large due to the bigger antenna.

My other gripe is that it isn't plug-n-play. It seems like everything I buy from TRENDnet anymore has to have the drivers supplied with it on a CD and/or I need to download them from the internet.

Other Thoughts: I've given away or thrown away all the other adapters I've owned over the years but this one is a keeper.

4 out of 5 eggsUSB wireless

Pros: Easy to use, install and connect.
AC connections speeds of 867Mbps
Utility to see you speed and signal str.
supports USB3.0
driver cd included

Cons: Have to have drivers installed 1st.

Other Thoughts: over all things went will during the testing and use of the dual band wireless adapter. Drivers installed quickly and once that was done, windows 7 recognized it with no problem. No default drivers for the Dual Band wireless cards is a small draw back. Plus you will need to make sure you have an access port that supports it as well. My speeds ranged from 650Mbps - 867Mbps, that is over all better than the standard N speed of 300Mbps. I did use it to patch a few games on my laptop and several hours of game play.

3 out of 5 eggsBring the noise bring the Klunk

Pros: Works as advertised.

Cons: No plug and go.

Other Thoughts: To each their own.
There are others out there for less that would be a better value.

This requires drivers via website or cd.
The fact Win 7 did not auto detect drivers was understandable.

Be careful if you are portable with this device.

1 out of 5 eggsDo not buy!

Pros: USB 3.0

Cons: I got this along with a new D-Link AC router and a cheaper wireless N rosewill adapter. Everything worked great except for this Trendnet ac adapter.

The software included is trash, and hangs or doesn't launch at all.
The drivers included are old, and you still have to get new ones from website.
The adapter just DIDNT WORK at all most of the time
When it did work it was getting 10-50mbps connections, where the cheap old N adapter was getting 300mbps!
There was twice where this adapater made one of my computers blue screen.

Other Thoughts: I am on Windows 7 64 bit, and I work in IT as a system administrator so I can assure you this is not user error.

I'm pretty much furious that there's responses to the negative reviews here on newegg from the manufacturer but they still haven't responded to the ticket I sent in 6 days ago! They said 1-2 business days! Still nothing. I used to like TrendNet, but the poor quality of this product combined with the even bigger lack of support from TrendNet has ruined them for me. Thank goodness newegg has great customer service and I'll be able to return this hunk of junk.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello TechGuy,

We truly apologize for your overall experience and frustration. If you haven't returned it I would suggest to point the 805ub to your router in orientation to see if that helps. If that doesn't work please email me directly at with "Newegg TEW-805UB Review" in the subject line and I will be able to assist you immediately with the hassle free return. Thank you for taking the time to review our product and I hope to hear from you soon to restore your trust in TRENDnet.

5 out of 5 eggsrealtek RTL8812AU chipset

Pros: So, all these eggsperts, and not one mention of the chipset ?

"you have to use drivers from trendnet" or "you have to use trendnets wifi utility"

Cons: eggsperts

Other Thoughts: not surprised at all. BTW, trendnet, nice product.
