5 out of 5 eggsamazing

Pros: It's just as fast as (Cat5) ethernet cable, I don't even notice a difference. Maybe even faster?

Cons: It's a little thick, which makes it difficult to use adjacent USB ports.

Other Thoughts: If you're doing a fresh install of your OS, make sure it's plugged into your USB 2.0, and download drivers to make your USB 3.0 functional first.

5 out of 5 eggsTew-805UB/A

Pros: Connects to my DLink AC router from Optimum. The connection fluctuates between 85 mbps to 130 mbps. However even though it doesn't connect at 300 mbps. The download speed is excellent. My son has a New Dell Latitude 5540 and he is downloading at 54Mbps and this card is doing the same. I tested using speakeasy.net. My Ethernet connection was also in the 56Mbps. I used the original drivers. I plan to check to see if there are newer drivers. Maybe it will solve the fluctuation. My internal wifi card was downing loading at 16mbps. This card tripled my download speed over the internet.

Cons: Like other USB it takes the space of the next usb port.

3 out of 5 eggsIt was fun while it lasted

Pros: Connects at the specified speed of 867Gb/s to my Asus AC router.
Very portable.
No issues finding or connecting to WiFi.

Cons: Died after 7 months of use. There is no power response when using either USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 ports.
When transferring data (connected via AC speeds), there's a tendency for the transfer speed to fluctuate. This is very prevalent when transferring a large file such as VOB or large mp4 file.
Actual data transfer speeds are not as high as expected. Most of the time the speed would waver between 25-40 GB/s. This is far lower than the connected 867 Gb/s speed. And yes, I do recognize that 867 is a theoretical number (not taking into account packet overhead), but I still expected that hard drive speeds would be the lowest common denominator, not this NIC.

Other Thoughts: Even with the cons, If it hadn't died, I would have recommended this for those individuals whose WiFi NIC maxes out at 150 Gb/s.

My reason for the initial purchase was to replace the built-in WiFi on my then new (GAMING) laptop that tops out at 150 Gb/s (physical NIC is 100 Gb/s). I could rant about this design decision by the manufacturer for days, but that's another review for another product. A mistake on my part, never again.

1 out of 5 eggsDo not buy under any circumstance

Pros: None

Cons: Large size blocks USB ports on all sides, often blocked by case.

Connection isn't consistent- tested side by side with other machines, this one would have very short bursts of connectivity followed by long slogs of no connection. More accurately, the OS thought the connection was fine but no data came through.

Did not work with Ubuntu. Did not work OOB with Windows, needed drivers on disc.

Would not function upon resuming from sleep, needed to un/plug or dis/enable on each wake.

Did not work on unpowered USB hub along side Logitech wireless receiver and wired keyboard.

Suspected, but impossible to confirm, to have caused BSODs. I didn't BSOD when it wasn't plugged in- wired networks worked fine for days and weeks. Of course, it could be coincidence/correlation only.

Other Thoughts: I'm finally throwing this poc away.

5 out of 5 eggsworks perfect on all w 8 platforms, +linux, +mac

Pros: this has the rtl8812au chipset from realtek. drivers are all over the www. you DO NOT have to use the drivers and/or utility from trendnet.

Edimax has the best selection of drivers for windows, linux, and mac.

you can even get them from realtek, but unless you are a tech level 6 or higher, you wont find them.

Cons: tech level pinocchios

Other Thoughts: working perfect on w 8.1 x64 pro

2 out of 5 eggsTake yer chances.

Pros: Well, if it had worked, I'd assume it would have been an upgrade from my current adapter. If you get one that works I'm sure it would be an upgrade from a USB 2.0 wireless adapter, but mine didn't, so it wasn't.

Cons: -Not plug and play
Utilities for these kinds of products rob speed and eat up CPU/RAM and really just shouldn't exist.

-Didn't function.
I tested on two PCs with USB3 mobo ports. On one, the utility wouldn't even open (Windows 7 Pro Ultimate 64-Bit) and the light on the adapter didn't light up on either PC.

Other Thoughts: Waiting on an RMA. Wish it would have worked, but oh well. USB 3.0 technology probably shouldn't be bought cheaply but I like to roll the dice from time to time. Sometimes I hit a home run, sometimes I strike out. Whatabummer.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

We are sorry you had this experience with the TEW-805UB. The LED should blink even if it isn’t connected to a network.
With the adapter connected to a computer please check your Device Manager to see if the adapter is being detected at all. Press the Windows key + R and type in devmgmt.msc to open the Device Manager. It should be listed under the Network Adapters category as AC1200 Dual Band USB Adapter. If you see it listed under Other Devices with an exclamation point, please right click on it and uninstall it. After it has been uninstalled, reinstall the utility from the CD.

If the driver fails to load or the unit just doesn’t appear in the Device Manager at all we would recommend following through on the RMA for warranty services. If you submitted an RMA request at TRENDnet.com please email Adrian@trendnet.com with your contact information and a link to this review and we will take care of it as soon as possible.

Regards,
Adrian

5 out of 5 eggsAnd it really really works!

Pros: Had an internal PCI wireless card which was great. Sadly it cooked. SO, I wanted something simple and easy. This is it. I've notice how laptop wireless seems to be the first thing to go. When the internal wireless card went out, I figured, why make brain surgery out of it. This works great, there are no flickers or jitter with streaming video content, and if it goes out, yank it and put in another. Simple

Cons: None that I can see.

Other Thoughts: Who says you need a truck when bicycle will do?

1 out of 5 eggsBAD

Pros: It's got a pretty box.

Cons: Caused lag in my games. Called Technical Support, spoke to someone whom I could barely understand his English. He told me to try 2.4ghz, I told him that is not why I purchased this adapter. He told me it could be interference. I very seriously doubt interference is the issue, because I live in a rural area, with the only other wireless devices are connected 2.4ghz. I will be purchasing another adapter, rest assured it won't be Trendnet.

3 out of 5 eggsTrendNet Scores again, but...

Pros: *Great Connectivity on 2.4Ghz Band
*Utility Software works, simple and not trying to do to much.
just gets the job done - connecting you to the network.

Cons: *Somewhat wide... eats USB ports that are in close proximity
*Doesn't work well at all on 5Ghz Band - drops frequently.
*USB 3.0 connectivity makes zero difference in network performance.

Other Thoughts: Tested on two PC's. My self built AMD 8350 based machine & a newly purchased Asus X502CA-HPD1104I-P Laptop with USB 3.0 ports for my fiances daughter.

Speedtest.net = 21.4Mbps Down / 2.98 Up - respectable
10ft from router via inSSIDer on desktop = -45db strength
Outside in front yard via Asus Laptop roughly 65ft away = 68db

Over 5Ghz, the connectivity was very spotty. Same result over USB 2 or 3. However, switching back to 2.4 things worked well. But even then, this adapter was not as strong as the integrated wifi in the Asus or HP laptops.

I can't say I recommend this adapter for 5Ghz networks. Now, it could be that it just doesn't care much for my Buffalo AirStation. However, the AirStation didn't have any problems at all communicating with other 5Ghz equipment I own. Odd. But since it is marketed as an AC Adapter I just can't recommend it. But it is a good effort.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsEconomically priced and easy setup with fair to good performance

Pros: -2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n and 5 GHz 802.11a/n/ac with up to 867 Mbps Wireless AC or up to or 300 Mbps advertised wireless speeds.
-Backwards compatible with IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11b, and IEEE 802.11a networks.
-Multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) technology which should allow for expanded coverage.
-Windows XP (32/64-bit) through Windows 8 (32/64-bit) compatibility.
-USB 3.0 connection which should equate to greater I/O bandwidth and higher speeds.
-Protected Setup (WPS) button and nonobtrusive status light.
-3-year limited warranty.
-Very reasonably priced.
-Very easy and quick installation using the TRENDnet utility (see utility cons below).

During my testing, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signal strength was consistently at 80% or above when the adapter was placed at less than approximately 45 feet from my Netgear AC1200 capable Gigabit wireless router. However, signal strength degraded quickly at distances greater than 45 to 55 feet, and was less than 30% by approximately 65-70 feet. TEW-805UB in door coverage is advertised at up to 100 meters (330 feet). USB 3.0, 5 GHz connection speeds were 150-175 Mbps and 2.4 GHz connection speeds were 80-110 Mbps when tested at approximately 40-45 feet from my router.

The adapter never lost connectivity during testing when the adapter was placed at less than approximately 45 feet from my wireless router.

Cons: The adapter is a bit bulky and could easily block access to adjoining ports. This problem could be easily addressed with a USB 3.0 extension cable, but an extension cable was not included with my TEW-805UB package.

It appears that the TRENDnet utility is necessary for the adapter to work; I could not get the adapter to work properly by only installing the drivers. Acknowledging that the utility works well, such utilities can cause problems and/or conflicts. Additionally, it was not possible to connect with the utility without creating a profile.

I was not able to obtain advertised maximal wireless speeds or advertised maximal coverage range.

Please also see other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: All said and done, I have mixed opinions about the TEW-805UB. That is, the TEW-805UB is a slightly bulky AC1200 dual band wireless USB 3.0 adapter that is very reasonably priced at less than 40 dollars, very easy to setup and configure using the included setup utility and drivers, and includes a generous 3-year limited warranty. In comparison, this adapter performs better than my N600 wireless dual band USB 2.0 adapters and was on par with a few AC1200 adapters that I have tested.

In contrast, the package should ship with a USB 3.0 extension cable, installation without the utility should be possible, and I was not able to obtain anywhere close to the advertised maximal wireless speeds or advertised maximal coverage range.

In fairness, maximal capabilities are seldom obtainable, individual findings may vary greatly based on factors such as hardware and environment, and I was not able to test the TEW-805UB on a paired AC1200 TRENDnet wireless router. Equally, while my Netgear paired AC1200 adapter has greater speed and distance performance, the cost was double that of the TEW-805UB and it only included a 1-year limited warranty. I was torn between a rating of 3 and 4 and given that 3.5 was not an option, I chose a rating of 4 based on product features, ease of setup, warranty and cost.

So when would I recommend this adapter – For users with an AC1200 Gigabit wireless router that are in need of economic performance gains above that which a typical N600 wireless dual band adapter can offer, and for an environment where the adapter will be no more than 50 feet from the wireless router.

Disclosure: I am not paid by Newegg.com, Newegg.com subsidiaries, partners, and/or vendors to test products or write product reviews. I am provided with sample products which I may or may not be required to return to Newegg. I make every effort to test products under real world and end-user conditions, and to report my individual experiences in a respectful and fair manner.
