5 out of 5 eggsWorking Great

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-811DRU AC1200 Dual Band Wireless Router- 4 Gigabit port, , DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: Spent an hour updating firmware, reviewing at every setting and picking a good location. This was a few months ago now. Working well ever since. Connecting wirelessly with: 2 new android phones, MAC Pro laptop, iPad-2, PS3, and 2 Windows 7 PCs. Wired has a NAS and 3 more PCs. I know ... it's a technical family. All's good: Olympics via streaming looked great.

Cons: Nothing wrong with unit. Would actually move more to "wired" if there were more than 4 ports (I know, tell the chipset makers). Not a ding, just a wish.

Other Thoughts: Had a G wireless router for 8 years, and finally decided it was time to jump to an AS. This was one model/brand that consistently reviewed well at a few of my trusted websites. Never used Trendnet before, and the user reviews here are a bit scary/mixed. I had no issues at all. Believe all wireless routers are a bit complex to setup correctly ... firmware updates, 100 settings, placement, bad client devices, etc.

4 out of 5 eggsDD-WRT and 802.11AC

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-811DRU AC1200 Dual Band Wireless Router- 4 Gigabit port, , DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: Go to Trendnet's support page and download the open source firmware, that is the DD-WRT build for this router. No need to scavenge forums and read long tutorials. Just download that firmware file and upload it to your router. Boom DD-WRT the easy way. Both 2.4ghz and 5g has solid throughput. Mind you, not the fastest connection I ever seen, but at ~$85 for a dual band router and DD-WRT basically officially supported, I am not complaining.

Cons: The router is powered by a 800mhz ARM A8, which to me seems to be overkilled. DD-WRT never report cpu loads higher than 25% and the CPU idles at 75C. Underload the temperature quickly climbs to ~80C and I suspect some thermal throttling on the Wlan interface. Unfortunately the under/overclocking does not work at all with the official dd-wrt, so I just cross my finger and hope the soc can sustain such high temperature.

Other Thoughts: I don't have an AC receiver to test the throughput, but my older devices get above average speeds with both 2.4 and 5ghz N. The response time is also fairly quick, except occasional hiccup presumably related to thermal issues. I might crack the box open and add a bigger heat sink or attach a fan to the side. I guess a DD-WRT router is never meant for those who just want their router to perform out of the box. But for the tweakers, this is a good router to work with.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-811DRU AC1200 Dual Band Wireless Router- 4 Gigabit port, , DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: I've heard the new wireless standard and wanted to give it a try. I always have trouble connecting to my iPad when I’m in my back yard. Replaced my old router, used same wifi name and password. My iPad now is getting very strong signal. Full bars. I don’t have to change wifi password on my PS3 and my smart phone. I’m a satisfied customer.

Cons: Nothing so far

2 out of 5 eggsSignal strength is horrible

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-811DRU AC1200 Dual Band Wireless Router- 4 Gigabit port, , DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: The speeds on this router and the price is quite nice.

Cons: The signal strength of this router is simply horrible. I live in a small house and with only a bathroom to seperate the room with the router and my bedroom I barely get a signal and it drops signal regularly.

1 out of 5 eggsExtremely Disappointed

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-811DRU AC1200 Dual Band Wireless Router- 4 Gigabit port, , DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: The router does offer some really nice features such as the usb storage port, SMB and FTP. I've not gotten to use any of these yet unfortunately due to the issues I've had in fear of further complicating the issues or triggering a bug. Wired connections seem to be ok for the most part. Having 1Gbps LAN ports on a router is great and works well with the gig-e trendnet switches I've been so happy with over the years.

Cons: Let's start with the small things before I rant below about my intermittent weird connectivity. First of all the UI isn't the most friendly to use, which isn't a big deal, but to save or change any settings you must reboot the router every single time (unless I'm missing something?)

And for the rant about connection drops:

This has been almost unusable since I installed it 3 weeks ago. My connection never completely drops (ICMP still gets out) but anything using any bandwidth to speak of (or maybe TCP?) dies every few minutes until I re-auth with the AP. This probably does seem to be specific to the wireless only and happens with both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz.

Youtube is not watchable without several page reloads and re-auths, any file transfer over ~10MB to my Windows NAS fails when sending and forces me to re-mount the file share to even browse. Spotify on phone or tablet works for about 5-10 minutes before it says unable to connect. I've been forced to save tracks for offline so I can listen to an entire album, or switch to my mobile carriers network. Airplay to my Apple TV does not work unless I am plugged in to my switch on the same broadcast domain. Google Chromecast works for about 10 minutes before I have to restart it.

I've had issues with several different device types. This happens on both the 2.4Ghz as well as the 5Ghz. I've even tried disabling the 5Ghz to test. I've tried looking for clean channels using both iStumbler and Kismet with no change at all.

After purchasing so many Trendnet products and being so happy with the value this is my first time I've had any disappointment, and it's a lot of disappointment. Unfortunately I waited awhile before swapping out my trusty old WRT54GL for this and so my 30 days to get a refund have passed. I'll go ahead and try the suggestions the Trendnet folks posted because otherwise this is useless as a wireless AP and definitely doesn't meet my needs for a wired only router.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsNot Good

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-811DRU AC1200 Dual Band Wireless Router- 4 Gigabit port, , DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: Long Range

Cons: Even after the latest firmware update, droped connections several times. Had to reboot twice a day. My family's iPads were not happy. NewEgg gave me a RMA. Thank you New Egg!

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Anonymous,

We apologize for the overall frustration due to connection drops. Once you receive a replacement, if possible I would suggest you to download and install InSSIDer via the following link, http://www.metageek.net/support/downloads/, to locate a less congested wireless channel to use on both 2.4 and 5GHz if applicable. The WPA2/AES security is suggested, and remember to set channel width to 20/40MHz on 2.4GHz for a better speed purpose. If these still don’t help please email me directly at adrian@trendnet.com with “Newegg TEW-811DRU review” in the subject line and I will contact you immediately to assist.

Warmest regards,

Adrian

1 out of 5 eggsSad Little Thing

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-811DRU AC1200 Dual Band Wireless Router- 4 Gigabit port, , DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: -Fast Speeds (When in Range, see cons)
-Easy UI
-Tons of options/features
-Small (In physical size)
-Works great as a switch & DNS Server

Cons: -Really bad Range
-Froze
-Couple of devices could not hook-up to it

I really wanted this router to work cause it was a great price for what looked to be very promising. However one major downside to this router was the terrible range it had, not just on 5ghz which I was expecting but the 2.4ghz couldn't even cover my house. I don't have the largest of houses I have a main floor and a basement and the router is placed in the study on the first floor. In the room right below the study (so in a bedroom in the basement) the computer only received one bar in signal and was communicating at max speeds of 1.5 mbps to the network and .2 mbps with the internet. So therefore I had to switch back to my old Linksys WRT54GL (old reliable).

I than turned this router into a test network (I work in IT and have many projects in which a test network is great to have). However, I found my network was constantly going down and even after updating the firmware and resetting the device the problems never ceased.

Other Thoughts: I work in PC support for a high quality insurance agency.

My personal rig:
Intel i5-3570k
MSI MPower z77
8gb 2133 G.SKILL
MSI 7870
Corsair 500r
240gb OCZ ssd
1TB Samsung hdd
3TB Seagate hdd
LG Blu-Ray/DVD
Windows 7 Pro x64

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Valued Customer,

I apologize deeply for this router not working as promised. I would suggest to try one of less congested wireless channels or change of orientation. If these still don’t help please email me at adrian@trendnet.com with "Newegg TEW-811DRU Review" in the subject line and I will respond to you immediately to assist. Hope to hear from you soon to regain your trust in TRENDnet.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-811DRU AC1200 Dual Band Wireless Router- 4 Gigabit port, , DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: Good overall design and footprint of the router. Good speeds with minimal distance between router and client.

Cons: Thoroughput drops off as distance increases. You may have to centralize the router in your home to get maximum signal coverage.

Biggest issue is that the port triggering (special applications) of advanced router settings does not work. I have several xbox's in my home, so I needed to get port triggering working. I have tried several times to open the ports and everytime I apply the settings, the router loses all internet connectivity and I can no longer log into the router management settings. This has happened after several resets of the router and reapplying the settings. Same outcome every single time.

Other Thoughts: The frustration of going through the process several times has alone turned me off on this product and the brand. It will now sit here as a basic paperweight with no function. i was looking forward to the product after seeing the 4 egg reviews on Newegg, but now I question how many of the consumers are using this beyond the basic wireless router. Completely useless to me now. I've even upgraded to the latest firmware and the same issue happens.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello John,

I apologize deeply for this router not working as promised. If possible, I would like to know more about your port triggering settings and hope to replicate it in our lab. Please email me at adrian@trendnet.com with "Newegg TEW-811DRU Review" in the subject line and I will respond to you immediately.

Warm regards,

Adrian

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-811DRU AC1200 Dual Band Wireless Router- 4 Gigabit port, , DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: >strong signal strength
>simple internal software interface
>Guest networks

Cons: >non-standard IP access number (not 192.168.1.1, like every other router)

Other Thoughts: You're going to be hard-pressed to find a better router for the price. It offers all the features you would expect for a router at this price point, as well as some of the control settings (wireless bridging) you don't normally find until you start looking at more expensive routers.
I got strong signal strength and speedy connection through my house, with the router in a central location. The 5Ghz band was the always the first to begin to drop out, but never completely cutting out (never below two bars). The 2.4Ghz band was strong though out the house, and never fell below 3 bars.
Streaming videos and TV shows was not a problem, probably more than enough for the majority of users.

1 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-811DRU AC1200 Dual Band Wireless Router- 4 Gigabit port, , DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: Worked well when able to get a signal. Capable of handling streaming video from HTPC to extenders.

Cons: Range was very poor. Had trouble maintaining a consistent connection in the same room as few as 8 feet away. I RMAd this router and got a AC66U instead, which has much better range.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Anonymous,

We apologize deeply for this router not working as promised. I would suggest to reset this unit back to the factory default settings and re-configure it. Meanwhile, if applicable, please use this link : http://www.trendnet.com/support/supportdetail.asp?prod=100_TEW-811DRU , to update to the latest firmware . Also, different orientation can help.
