1 out of 5 eggsTEW-811DRU

Pros: Speed up to 90Mbps on ac WIFI with Comcast internet.

Cons: Even with the latest firmware, n WIFI is defective and stuck at around 2Mbps while the same Comcast connection on other n routers could constantly go up to 75Mbps. The point is that most devces are still connected at n WIFI where this router fails miserably. This ac1200 router n connection is clearly inferior than many other n routers. Perhaps, I got a defective unit. But according to many users' comments on Newegg, the problem is probably inherent in the design or the firmware.

Other Thoughts: Only 8MB flash for mini dd-wrt and cannot support the full dd-wrt version. Newegg RMA service is eggcellent!

4 out of 5 eggsPretty good base for modding

Pros: Price - if you can get it on sale and slap some promotion on top of it it's almost free
WAN to LAN speed - definitely higher than my cable subscription
Internal antenna connectors are standard and can accept aftermarket pigtails for antenna mods
Seems to have good 5GHz speed out of the box
Comes with a random password set

Cons: Poor internal antennae design
2.4GHz speed is low
Difficult to open (can we have screws instead of plastic clips?)
Small heatsink and poor thermal interface between the chip and the heatsink.

Other Thoughts: should be 2 stars for an average user who wants just open the box, may be update the firmware and expect things to work. 4 stars for tinkerer who enjoys some modding. I've added 6DBi external antennas and reseated the heatsink with some thermal paste added. 2.4Ghz 802.11n speed is not very fast (about 10mbit speed test) in a bedroom 2 walls away but I have like 15 WiFi networks in range so it doesn't look too bad. All together it's a little gem for me as I got it on sale and I enjoy paying close to nothing and making things work better.

3 out of 5 eggsgreat for 5ghz

Pros: At $20, it's the cheapest AC router supporting 1.2Gbps & DD-WRT v3 with beamforming. However, smallnetbuilder review shows about 134mpbs downlink over 5ghz.

Cons: 2.4 Ghz signal is worse than my 2005 G router. Two issues, tiny internal antenna optimized for 5Ghz and no amplifier. Both antennas are shared for 2.4 and 5. Luckily it's internal antenna's wiring is a plug. Once you have it open also put real thermal paste on the heatsink for the CPU. Drops the temps from 90C to 85C... run it horizontal and half exposed and it drops to 77C. Still hot, but FAR better. Changing to external antenna helped a little with 2.4 link speed, but signal quality did improve.

Other Thoughts: With a cheap enough price it's useful as a lesson router for DD-WRT. v3 development for it is alive and well so you'll be getting continuous updates. Latest beta build is 7/2015.

For the average user, get the majority your PCs/tablets @ at 5ghz, leave your other lower speed devices (printer, etc) at 2.4 and it'll be a fine upgrade if you only had 2.4 prior.

5 out of 5 eggsa little bit more than I expected

Pros: All four (five) green lights light up immediately when I first turn it on and four green lights stay on. With an AC1200 adapter, I can connect to both 2.4 and 5 GHZ simultaneously. With modem, it draws only 9.4W of power which is the same as my older, less powerful router/modem. I like how fast it is to be ready. Everything worked fine right out of the box. It is the latest standard (AC).

Cons: It is quite a bit bigger than my old router.

4 out of 5 eggs"Broke" in a week, but fixed by upgrade

Pros: It was a bargain, easy setup, and very fast. So, so range.

Cons: It "died" within a week. It was running maximum 40-45kbps over the internet, but it was running normal speed between the LAN/WLAN connection. So, the hub/router function was fine but something was wrong with the WAN interface, it was super slow. It was even slow on the router's own admin interface, loading pages very very slow and giving errors (problem with request).

So, I upgraded from the original firmware of 1.0.2.0 to 1.0.4.0 to 1.0.6.x and those did not help, but 1.0.8.0 worked. It is now full speed.

The range looks the same but I need to test some more. Also disabling the 2.4 radio seems to have a little.

Other Thoughts: If you have the same problem, where the DL speed from internet is around 40Kbps, try the 1.0.8.0 firmware.

1 out of 5 eggsbad WAN port

Pros: Small size

Cons: Bad WAN port. Unable to test any further.

Other Thoughts: Disconnected my old working router and connected the TEW-811DRU. Configured the router using the wizard. The router was broadcasting the two bands but was not connecting to the cable modem. Troubleshooting with TWC and they could never detect any activity while the TRENDnet router was connected. Reconnected my old router and everything worked as before. Returning for a refund. QA/QC of routers being sold these days is terrible.

2 out of 5 eggs50% Success Rate

Pros: AC1200 for a small price
Great range and throughput-for direct line of site measurement :)

Cons: 1 of 2 DOA
Cannot use special characters for password
Cannot change default username
For the one that seems to function-will not update date\time
No firmware update for over 1 year
Firmware offers Limited DHCP management

Other Thoughts: Purchased 2 TRENDnet TEW-811DRU and immediately updated firmware. I was surprised the firmware had not been updated in over a year, considering the recent security issues to routers.

1 of 2 would not route, no matter how nice I was to it-I could log in but it would not pass traffic. The 2nd one worked without much issue-the 2nd unit will not update date\time. I am surprised how limited the firmware is in machine management-whiled being spoiled by other manufacturers, TRENDnet wants me to copy the information from one section in order to manage in another section....not convenient at all.

I want to change the default username-it is a basic function of security management and yet I am stuck with 'admin'. I can create additional login sets but 'admin' is hard-coded, meaning if someone wants to hack in, half of the job is done for them. By the way, other TRENDnet products allow special characters for passwords, yet the TEW-811DRU does not-whatever.

Manufacturer Response:

Valued Customer,

We are sorry to hear about the inconvenience this product has caused you. Please email us at sales@trendnet.com and we will gladly swap your unit out .
