5 out of 5 eggsEasy setup and good stable throughout

This review is from: TRENDnet TPL-420E2K Powerline AV2 AV1200 Adapter Kit, Up to 1.2Gbps

Pros: Setup and installation was a breeze. I was worried about performance because I'm in an older house that does not have 3 prong outlets everywhere.

I purchased this because my wifi was too weak in my living room to stream hd content from my home PC or web. Plan was to place a node in my living room and run cable to TV. Previously my tv was pulling speeds of < 1mbps from bandwidth place.com, now I am getting around 30. I plugged the cable into my laptop was was getting my full up and down speeds (50/50).

I haven't tried file transfers from my main PC yet to see max throughput but if I can pull 50 up and down this thing has met my needs. I will post transfer rates from my internal network (all gigabit connections) when I have time to play around.

Cons: None yet. Didn't block other power outlet, cables included. I did see that the units go to sleep when they are inactive so I'm not sure how long the modes take to wake up and resync.

Other Thoughts: I don't know how robust these are but for home multimedia use mine is working fine. I'm going to connect this to an older router I have for a second wifi network and to hard wire connect my tv and set top box.

4 out of 5 eggsBetter than WiFi

This review is from: TRENDnet TPL-420E2K Powerline AV2 AV1200 Adapter Kit, Up to 1.2Gbps

Pros: I rent a detached unit and the landlord provides the internet via a Crapcast WiFi connection. With no options to run wires this works a lot better than WiFi.

Cons: All power line adapters are a hit & miss.

1 out of 5 eggsNot ready for primetime

This review is from: TRENDnet TPL-420E2K Powerline AV2 AV1200 Adapter Kit, Up to 1.2Gbps

Pros: Easy to reach customer support on the telephone.

Cons: I purchased two kits (total of four adapters). One adapter from each kit was DOA - the power LED didn't even light up. Customer support suggested holding in the reset button (which isn't documented) for 60 seconds. Didn't help. Quality control is sorely lacking.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello . ,

5 out of 5 eggsGreat addition to the family.

This review is from: TRENDnet TPL-420E2K Powerline AV2 AV1200 Adapter Kit, Up to 1.2Gbps

Pros: I've been using Trendnet 200Mbps adapters for a very long time and I love their products. With all the hype from smallnetbuilder I had to run out and purchase this unit. The primary adapter is connected in out family room about 30 ft away from the secondary unit (Boys room) where they have a xbox one to do their gaming. Wireless is not an option because of the way out house is constructed. Unlike the previous user my kit setup in 5 minutes flat. My house was built in 1953 and has power adapters, toasters, washer/dryer, etc in it's path to my boys room. This kit ROCKS!!! This is about 3 times as fast as my 200Mbps kit which gave me about 100Mbps. This new unit is very close to 300Mbps and my kids are forever grateful. I highly recommend this to everyone looking to get more speed where wireless just can't.

Cons: Price a little too high but worth it. If you can get this under $100 go for it by all means. This product resembles everything that was said by smallnetbuilder.

Other Thoughts: Follow the users guide for the quickest way to set this up.

1 out of 5 eggsTRENDnet TPL-420E2K - DOES NOT WORK

This review is from: TRENDnet TPL-420E2K Powerline AV2 AV1200 Adapter Kit, Up to 1.2Gbps

Pros: Nice packaging ?

Cons: I have now had three (3) new units mailed to me. The first one had a defective unit while the other one worked - I guess (lights were on).

The second set sent to me - none of them worked - no lights - no links.

Third set I received promptly from Newegg (they are great by the way). The units both lit up - WOW!!!! I was finally able to get them to sync after resetting the units three (3) times - hum, a pattern developing here.

Anyways, they linked up and from only 38 feet away I was able to get - wait for it - 42 mb/s. Let me help you - my Wi-Fi from over 55 feet away at the longest spot gets 135 mb/s. I mean really!? My house was built 12 years ago - so I think my copper wiring is still good.

This product is not ready for prime time in my professional opinion. I am an IT geek on both PC's & Mac's and I can say this product does not work AT ALL.

I called TrendNet's tech support / reviewed their FAQ - nothing. Cannot do anything to get a better connection than what I have done.

So, with that good luck if you are unlucky to buy one. But if you do - then G love ya.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Jack,

We are sorry to hear that you are having issues with the TPL-420E2K. Powerline adapters are a great alternative if you are unable to achieve wireless coverage. They fill a need when wireless isn’t an option. Powerline networking speeds are going to be impacted by distance and interference. Trying different outlets and locating or eliminating sources of interference may improve the speed you get through them. Please also avoid using the adapters on GFI outlets or outlets on AFCI breakers as they can cause connectivity issues.

Adrian

Pros: I bought this powerline adapters because I like the new stuff and powerline technology is more reliable over WiFi. The speed is not to gig like the test site said.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Performance

This review is from: TRENDnet TPL-420E2K Powerline AV2 AV1200 Adapter Kit, Up to 1.2Gbps

Pros: Easy to use powerline connectivity

Cons: Using three TPL-420E2K adapters connecting across two different non-GFI and non-filtered (1990 built 2000 sqft two story house) circuits between upstairs office gigabit capable wi-fi router and gigabit connected NAS box to downstairs PCs in den and family rooms. Pretty much symmetric download/upload from NAS to PC in each room results: 46 Mbps and 56 Mbps respectively. Far short of 1Gbps and worse than existing 5 MHz N bridge's 70Mbps and MoCA adapter's 195 Mbps performance.

Other Thoughts: Some years ago, I had some TrendNet homeplug turbo adapters which eventually got donated to Goodwill, I seem to recall that they had about 50 Mbps performance on my house power circuits. So for me, the MIMO Homeplug AV2 technology did not yield any improvement under actual real-world usage.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

Environmental factors are going to play a role in the performance you receive through the adapters. The old turbo units were only capable of approximately 25Mbps in perfect environments. They were not capable of 50Mbps throughput. Powerline is good for locations that cannot receive high speed wireless connections or for hardware that doesn’t have wireless capabilities. Different outlets and locating possible sources of Interference can also help with performance. If you require assistance with the units please email adrian@trendnet.com and we will have someone assist you as soon as possible. Please include a link to this review.
