3 out of 5 eggsIt works....

This review is from: BUFFALO AirStation HighPower N300 Wireless USB Adapter - WLI-UC-G300HP

Pros: It works just fine on XP and Win7 64bit, does what its supposed to do, no problems for me installing drivers etc. Couldnt say if it operates at specified speeds advertised, as we dont have the greatest connection up here.

Cons: Doesnt work with linux, not even detected by it. Not a problem for my folk's pc's, as they use windows, however, I am a long time linux user (albeit no guru lol) which makes this adapter rather pointless for me.

Other Thoughts: After googling, I found several complicated methods of making the ralink chipset operate, yet none worked. Further research showed ralink provided a driver for linux, however it was only rated to operate on the 2.6.3x series linux kernels. Sadly, no matter what I tried, I couldnt get the driver to compile, nor could I get the system to even recognise that it was even there. 3 eggs for the fact that it DOES work on windows, -2 for incompatibility with linux.

2 out of 5 eggsNo Drivers for win 7x64

This review is from: BUFFALO AirStation HighPower N300 Wireless USB Adapter - WLI-UC-G300HP

Pros: Updated review. Looks good and works well on Win Xp. Connects at 270Mbps with XP if you toggle to 40MHz mode. Connects at 130Mbps in 20MHz Mode.

Cons: NO wireless N drivers for x64 operating systems. Will only connect at 54Mbps in Win 7x64. Buffalo confirmed that it will not work in N mode on x64 operating systems.

Other Thoughts: Too bad I really liked the adapter and would have purchased a couple more if they had worked at rated speed.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks on XP problems on Win 7

This review is from: BUFFALO AirStation HighPower N300 Wireless USB Adapter - WLI-UC-G300HP

Pros: After downloading newest Drivers I can get it to work under Win 7 x64. Works well with XP. Can only get speeds to 130Mbps on my router. Connection seems stable and doesn't use as much power as my Airlink 101 150n adapter.

Cons: Finding the newest drivers is tricky. Goto buffalo-technology not Buffalotech both sites are from the same company and have drivers for this device. Its hard to configure in Win 7 x64 even with the newest drivers. On my router connections speeds are nowhere near the 300Mbps range. Connection strength is about the same as my other n adapter.

Other Thoughts: Nice looking and works but don't expect a really fast connection speed or better range than other similar devices.

4 out of 5 eggsBetter than Netgear WN111v2

This review is from: BUFFALO AirStation HighPower N300 Wireless USB Adapter - WLI-UC-G300HP

Pros: Flip up antenna, strength indicator LEDs, solid build quality, 2 year warranty

Cons: Didn't work as well with XP Zero Config. Lack of 64-bit drivers from Buffalo (though I read you can use the Ralink RT2870 drivers)

Other Thoughts: My old Buffalo PCMCIA wireless card finally broke, so I decided to get a USB wireless adapter. First I bought the Netgear WN111v2 based on good reviews and the Atheros chipset. It was dropping connections constantly whereas my PCMCIA card never did. I got fed up and decided to go back to Buffalo and buy this new adapter. Installed using XP Zero config first. When connection was dropped, somehow it wouldn't reconnect. Eventually decided to disable zero config and use the Buffalo Client Manager software instead. Now it works well with only a rare connection drop, performing much better than the Netgear.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst ever Wireless USB adapter

This review is from: BUFFALO AirStation HighPower N300 Wireless USB Adapter - WLI-UC-G300HP

Pros: Antenna. Yeah, that's all, nothin else.

Cons: Every time I restart my PC (or shutdown and turn it on later) I need to disconnect it from USB port and reconnected, otherwise the system (XP Pro SP3) cannot detect it.
I had the chance to test many Wireless USB adapters, most of them cheaper than this ($80 + Tax at Fry's), but none of them so bad. It's already on my RETURN list.
