5 out of 5 eggsBest router around

Pros: Speed
Flashable with DD-WRT
4 GB Ports

Cons: Power brick is big

Other Thoughts: After playing around with the default firmware I installed DD-WRT which I personally enjoy. I use the router now for my test network. It works flawlessly.

1 out of 5 eggsWifi completely stopped working

Pros: Very Fast
Easy to Use DD-WRT software
Looks Good?

Cons: I've had problems ever since about a year ago. First it stopped broadcasting SSID, which a reset helped. And then it stopped broadcasting and then wouldnt use any other SSID name and WPA2 password except for the default.

Now it won't broadcast AT ALL. After multiple resets, firmware upgrades, etc, im on my last leg with this thing. Stay away from this router, you will regret it in a few years.

1 out of 5 eggsWXR-HP-G300NH

Pros: Looks nice, good antennas. Nice DD-WRT Firmware where you can lose yourself for days and may end up bricking the device. I would have given it zero eggs but that is not an option.

Cons: WiFi freezes no matter what firmware you use even the open WRT. It broadcasts SSID but not working. Must do hard reset to get it to work. Temperamental. Packet Loss. I was living by Buffallo quality and after two of these which I have shy of over 1 year, I am a laughing stock of IT community. I will go back to Linksys since these obviously have issues.

Other Thoughts: What a waste of weekends, nights and precious time.

Manufacturer Response:

WifiNev, please contact me so we can trouble shoot your router. It could either be a setup issue, or the device needs to be replaced. The upgraded processor and highpower amplifier should be giving you a strong stable signal.

I looke forward to hearing from you

thanks

4 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: works well with factory firmware once configured properly. Range is good (just live in a small condo, and get reception all the way by my parking spot). No issues streaming videos wirelessly off the harddrive I plugged into it as a NAS to my PS3.

Cons: Had issues with wireless dropping frequently, don't recall the exact fix, but recall something about using 40MHz.

DD-WRT is available directly from Bufallo, but beware that you will lose some functionality that is built in, while gaining other advanced benefits from dd-wrt. Mainly, I couldn't figure out how to get the attached hd to stream via dlna, which made dd-wrt a no-go. I last tried this about a year ago so it could be that DLNA is now supported by dd-wrt, but I stopped worrying about it once I figured out how to fix the wireless dropping issue...

1 out of 5 eggsDon't not buy if you need to use the internet more than 20 minutes at a time

Pros: Decent signal range and easy set up.

Cons: This router is terrible. The router will just shut itself off randomly and there is no way to fix it. I tried installing updates and re-installing the router numerous times and nothing worked. I bought this router cause my girlfriend and I are both in school and take online classes so we need a good dependable router. It cuts off all the time and you just have to reset it.

There is no timing or pattern to it either. It didn't matter if we had every wireless device in the house using wifi or just one it would cut off just the same for all of them.

Other Thoughts: Unless you want to limit everyone's internet use in your house to 30 minutes at time get another router.

1 out of 5 eggsIt worked for 5 mintes before dying...

Pros: No idea. It's the first Buffalo I've bought. The interface seemed ok.

Cons: It worked for a short while, then the LAN stopped connecting to anything no matter what port I used. The wired connections are dead. Wireless I've reviewed the forums and documentation. I configure routers and switches all the time. I generally blame user error or ignorance.

Oh well...

1 out of 5 eggsAnd the 'ol tech-graveyard grows...

Pros: Provides excuse to waste countless hours of troubleshooting and linux hacking, which may make you smarter.

Inspires continued respect, use and deployments of the good old Linksys WRT54GL routers..

Cons: Despite all of your tinkering efforts, nothing actually fixes the router and in the end, by the time you give up, you'll be further haunted by the weekends you wasted trying to get it to work, the hair you pulled out of frustration, the weeks of spotty internet connectivity and the fact you bought the device in the first place.

- extremely unstable wifi, requires reboot
- lan-wan packetloss over cat5 as well..

Other Thoughts: I was struggling to get two Buffalo WHR-HP-G300N units working as reliable wifi APs at an office.. I couldn't believe these could be so unreliable and figured it was wireless interference at the office or just 2x faulty units..

Unfortunately, I then purchased this Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH (original version) for MY OWN HOME so I could see if it works and if not, go ahead and hack it more freely since I own the unit, hopefully coming up with a solution that I could apply at the office.

Well, I had a terrible home network for about 6 months while struggling with this unit.. Stock firmware, Buffalo DD-WRT firmware, Open-WRT, all eventually had the same problem.. Wireless goes down almost daily and requires a reboot to restore..

Gargoyle firmware seemed to be the most reliable and worked reasonably well for quite a while, minimizing required reboots for wireless to once every few days. Eventually, LAN performance became progressively more awful.. 750KB/s to the NAS over wireless. Also, WAN bandwidth (strangely much faster) was also becoming really spotty, even when plugged in. At first I thought it was a cable modem problem, but of course it wasn't.. Wish I gave up on this Buffalo before I ever bought it..

At the end, I found there was extreme packetloss everywhere - including WAN side between router and modem.. as if the wifi drops that require reboot weren't bad enough.

Had to go back to the old trusty Linksys WRT54GL running Tomato - which is incredibly reliable... This Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH unit is now taking up space in the designated drawers of useless tech purchase disappointments.

Once I find a new gigabit home router, I might attempt to throw Open WRT on this Buffalo and re-purpose it to be a dumb gigabit switch.. Of course after a year of struggling with it, it's probably safe to say that it will not even work as a switch reliably.. A smarter , less stubborn person than I would throw this away and stop wasting time on it.. Wish it never entered my house. It's like the Raven.

DO NOT LET THESE BUFFALO ROUTERS INTO YOUR LIFE, especially if you're the type that tinkers/tweaks/fixes things.. It will drive you mad.

5 out of 5 eggsLike it!

Pros: Not expensive. Lots of advanced features.

I have had this wireless router for over a year. I am using DD-WRT and it does what I want it to do. Port forwarding is easy once you figure it out.

Cons: The only con I can think of is that I had to do a web search for how to use the more advanced features. <shrug>
