3 out of 5 eggsI wasted way too much time and money

Pros: The only pros are a small form factor, DDWRT and removable antennas.

Cons: Really bad range and you can't fix it. Trust me. I purchased 2, I purchased the optional directional antenna. I played with every setting in every version of the firmware. Tried multiple antennas. Unless range isn't an issue for you, forget this router. I wasted way too much time and money on these. I picked up neighborhood routers almost as good as these in my own home. Add in stability issues when wireless throuput is too high for too long and you've got a terrible product that they should have yanked from the market long ago.

Other Thoughts: I purchased a highly rated competitive product for not too much more and all my problems disappeared. The range is easily 2X - 3X better and I get simultaneous dual band, a gigabit switch and 2 shareable USB ports for the few extra bucks. This router is as bad as the original WRT-HP-54G was good. That model still outperforms this one. I hate to so thoroughly trash a product but this completely deserves it. I am an idiot for not throwing in the towel on this product a long time ago.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Customization

Pros: It is a great router for people that want a high level of customization in their router.

Cons: The only disadvantage I have found is simply the ease-of-use of the DD-WRT firmware.

5 out of 5 eggsPleased

Pros: These, even before getting directional antennas for them, were able to bridge the gap between buildings that my client needed to cover---a 100 ft span with line of sight. Add to that the ability to connect easily with Android, and the small size, and you've got a good product. Gigabit, also, which should be industry standard. Your wired connections should ALWAYS outperform your wireless.

Cons: Product is light enough to be easily jostled, rattled, and banged around. Had to switch the flip-switch to "ON" instead of "AUTO," which really shouldn't even be a choice. WLAN should not be something that switches off when it doesn't think you're using it, because who knows when you'll need it or if that will be an emergency. The power saved is simply too minuscule to worry about.

Other Thoughts: Initially attempted a WPS setup. Don't bother. WPS seems like a feature that time forgot. Wireless Bridge or Wireless Repeater modes will have to do, because even setting it up "right" with so many verification my head spun, WPS still did not function. Not deducting an egg, though, because the other modes worked fine.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat router once flashed

Pros: Excellent, stable router, but only when flashed with non-Buffalo builds of dd-wrt. Hardware is robust with plenty of RAM and a strong broadcast signal (20dBm out of the box).

Cons: Stock firmware dropped the WAN port connection on any update of software settings (and I mean any update, even adjustments not related at all to the WAN connection). Only reestablished WAN connection after router was fully rebooted. Release / renew of WAN IP did not function.

That said, I did not have this issue even one time after flashing to an updated dd-wrt build. In my case at least this issue was completely due to the stock Buffalo dd-wrt build.

5 out of 5 eggsAs advertised

Pros: Works just as advertised. Preloaded dd-wrt is easy to set up.

Cons: Any cons I encountered would be attributed to dr-wrt, the hardware seems fine.

1 out of 5 eggsIn firmware limbo

Pros: Easy set up for the beginner. Easy firmware upgrade for the advanced user. High power . Helpful customer service.

Cons: The unit I was sent worked but had what they called a firmware hang up. The router connected easy. The limbo firmware prevented it from making it secure. I called customer service. After some trouble shooting they came to the conclusion that the factory firmware was in limbo. They said send it back for a new one. They said it must have slipped by quality control. Well I got the RMA and sent it in. Almost 2 weeks later and still no return. I would have never purchased this item if anyone told me I was going to be without wireless for at least 2 weeks.

5 out of 5 eggsso good so far

Pros: Up just over a month. No isues of any kind. stable, No reboots, it just works.
Firmware has lots of options and flexability, most all of which I have no need to touch, if one wants to get carried away you can be your own worst enemy.
I replaced a previous Buffalo (now a spare, no problems with it either) with this one that has more features. I did lower the power, as I have a small area to cover. Learn about decibels to play with the power. I dropped it to about 1/8th the factory output. This may contribute to stability or not. I am not interested in testing this, as I don't need to.

Cons: Dc cord on power adapter is about 4-5 ft long and is short for my needs as this is mounted near the cieling. I don' t have an outlet near the cieling.
The wire on the dc side is probably about 2cents a foot manufacturing cost, longer would be nice!

Other Thoughts: I have had 2 different buffalo models over the last 2-3 years and NO problems with them at all.

1 out of 5 eggsHeavily discounted for a reason!

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Need to set up WDS or wireless repeating with my VZW hotspot with Broadcom chipset . Spent couple hours tried to set it up myself and couldn't. Thought I didn't know DD-WRT enough, but called tech support the next day and he couldn't get it to work either. He said the unit is defective and told me to exchange for one. He said I'll have to pay for the round trip shipping if I want to do it with Buffalo. That's crazy considered that I had the AP for only 2 days and it didn't work. They're lucky I didn't ask them to pay for my time wasted on this. I rather pay to return it to NewEgg and give them this review. I'd give them zero egg if I can.

4 out of 5 eggsdd-wrt pre-installed

Pros: dd-wrt makes a router more secure, stable, and feature rich, but it's a pain to figure out and install the first time.

That's why this router is wonderful for the average joe that just wants a better router without the hassle of figuring out how to install and understanding it.

dd-wrt is very snappy on this

it's smaller than it looks in the picture

comes pre-configured 192.168.11.1 which is a plus for att dsl modem users that use 192.168.1.1

it is also pre-configured with wifi security turned on
(password is on the label)

Cons: wifi range is nothing special. I was hoping this would beat the asus wl-520gu with dd-wrt on it because I'm looking for a router that supports wireless-n to replace it

Other Thoughts: this is a 5 star router for the average joe

it's just a 4 star router for dd-wrt geeks
