5 out of 5 eggsA pretty good router

Pros: Easy to setup and use, comes with a stand or can be lain flat, 4 port gigabit Ethernet, USB networking.

Cons: Wish I got it on sale...I guess that's a con...

Other Thoughts: Bought for apt...living room is in center, with master and kid's room on either side...neither rooms have problems connecting wirelessly...can even connect my phone down three floors and out in the parking lot about 20 yards away. Had to have 4 ports to connect HTPC for streaming and main pc for gaming. However, my son's iMac connects and plays The Old Republic and NFS World just fine through Wifi.

Definitely recommend picking one up.

3 out of 5 eggsNot quite

Pros: Fast, good range, good price, DD-WRT, stable for web browsing.

Cons: Loses connection during Netflix videos, about once an hour on average. DD-WRT versus "user friendly", Movie Engine or not, nothing helped. Which means it fails the wife test, which means my ancient WRT54GL is back on the job. Tried using the Buffalo as a repeater, but that wasn't stable either.

Other Thoughts: Hard to find a good solid router these days.

4 out of 5 eggsOk for price I guess

Pros: Seems to do its functions properly.
Has lots of configurable options
For the price, it does a fairly good job.

Cons: Needs restart every few days. (I used to own a WNDR3700 which needed restart in few weeks but then again, that was almost thrice the cost.)
Concept of having a NAS via USB port is impractical to use. File transfer speed is to slow.
Doesn't support Jumbo frame and you're limited to 1500mtu (at least with stock firmware).

Other Thoughts: WNDR3700 was super nice and I loved it. If not for that weird radio dying issue, I would still be using that. Since most of the equipment is hardwired at home, I didn't want to spend 100s again for a super nice router (that may fail in a year or two). So this fits the bill perfectly. Has all the features that I want, is fairly configurable and functions nicely overall.

3 out of 5 eggsat least it comes with dd-wrt

Pros: Comes with dd-wrt installed. Usb port for shared printing or file sharing.

Cons: I don't get as good of a signal from this router as I do from a 6 year old draft-n router. The usb port is only 2.0.

Other Thoughts: All of the good things from this router are features from dd-wrt. It was convenient not having to flash it myself. Setting up a vpn server and file sharing with samba were easy enough to set up. The best feature is you can set an ip to ping at set intervals, if it can't successfully ping it for a set period of time, it will reset the router. That kept me from having to go back and unplug it due to my shoddy internet service.

Given the signal problem, the only reason I am still using this router is as a bridge, i.e. two wired networks with a wireless connection between them. That is another great feature of dd-wrt.

I guess the hardware deserves credit for having the necessary memory and processor power to run dd-wrt, but if you can't get a good signal on your devices then what good is that?

2 out of 5 eggsBuffalo, low quality, bad RMA service

Pros: When it works, it's great.

Cons: 1st unit lasted 18 months, 2nd lasted 6 months, long turn around time for replacement, replacement is a refurb unit, you pay shipping for returned product under warranty.

Other Thoughts: I normally don't write reviews, unless a product is extremely good or bad. This was a company I really liked. They give you 2 years warranty, but both units didn't make it that far. You have to ship it back on your dime, which adds $10 to your cost. My router controls my Internet access as well as 2 phone lines. Don't they understand how critical this item is and how reliable it need to be? Why make it such low quality? To make things worse, here's my experience with RMA: The first time they suggested I buy a cheap router for the 2 weeks it will take to ship back and forth. I made a mistake and bought the same unit. This time around, they received my unit last Friday and as of today-Thursday they still haven't shipped a replacement. To make things worse, they ship you a refurb (That lasted 6 months). So after buying 2 new units in the last 2 years, I will now have 2 refurbs on my hand on top of having spent $20 in shipping. I sent a "Shame on you" email to their RMA dept, to which I got no response.
I think we should vote with our wallets and just avoid buying low quality products, until the manuf gets the message. I, for one, am done buying Buffalo products.

3 out of 5 eggsworks fine but limited wireless range

Pros: slick design. dd-wrt support, comes with management software that make setting up an easy thing for an average person. USB HDD support; UPnP service.

Cons: extremely limited wireless range. I cranked the TX power up to 125 but still the get no wireless signal in the garage while placing this router in the living room (about 35 feet apart)

Other Thoughts: for some reason I can't get the data transfer speed between PCs in my network to go faster than 11 mb/s with all gigabit 10/100/1000 setup at full duplex on wired connection. I am not sure if it's the router's fault or it's limited by my hard drive read/write speed. i am just an average joe.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Paid 44.99 shipped. Easy to set up and use. Very fast wireless. Gigabit ethernet is a big plus at this price. Never had a dropped signal. Advanced settings could be a problem for some. All connected devices feel much more responsive when using this router.

Cons: Wireless range doesnt seem as good as some but the speed even with the reduced range is unmatched.

Other Thoughts: I will not buy another high end over priced router. They all burn out wireless signal in 2 years tops for me usually one year.
3 wired pc's
1 laptop
2 smart phones
1 wii
1 ipad
Never had a problem

5 out of 5 eggsGreat router

Pros: -Easy to set up (see other thoughts)
-Comes with DD-WRT pre installed

Cons: -None

Other Thoughts: I formerly had a Linksys WRT110 that was giving me tons of problems, so I bought this as a replacement.
Every issue I had with the Linksys is now completely solved and the Buffalo router is working perfectly.

I only find two things questionable:

1. The setup guide doesn't have any text, just a bunch of pictures.

2. Weird base plate, cant figure out how to lock it into place (or if it's even supposed to). Not really a con since the router has rubber feet if you want to lay it on its side, which is what I ended up doing.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Router. Meh documentation

Pros: Easy set up and great signal strength.

Cons: There is not one piece of documentation included or available on download from Buffalo site showing what the physical buttons on the device do. Zilch. All quick-star guides, instructions, user manual etc deal only with the software. Period. There is very little useful information about the router button "on/off/auto" configuration settings or even which one would be a power button. Or even a good description of what the lights on the unit mean. The unit seems very well made and easy enough from the software end but they must have had the software guys write all the manuals and left out the hardware guys.

5 out of 5 eggsStrong wireless AP

Pros: Using it as an access point and works well with my Sonicwall TZ210. Got rid of the Zyxel AP since it always have connections problems.
Easy setup, I had to use wide band and pick my wireless channel since I live in an apartment with about 15 different wireless devices in the area which did cause disruption to my old AP.

Cons: So far so good, I hope this one last.
