5 out of 5 eggsWonderful

Pros: - Plugged it in, configured it, and haven't touched it in about 4 months.
- Good range.
- USB hard drive feature works with minimal configuration.
- DD-WRT works very well and operates the hardware flawlessly.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: You definitely get more than what you're paying for. I've been searching for several painful years now for a faster router that's just as reliable as my WRT-54G (which I still end up going back to after 10+ years). This unit seems to be very reliable so far but I suspect it's due to the auto-reset feature. Something to think about/consider!

5 out of 5 eggsWZR-600DHP

Pros: Just wanted to let ya know that this works perfectly under Linux. Fast. No problems. DD-WRT. Easy setup. Did I mention FAST?

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: Disclaimer - I didn't buy this off of NEwegg. Got it on sale as a refurb for 1/2 price.

5 out of 5 eggsBuffalo Router

Pros: It's a Buffalo Router. Was extremely easy to setup, even using the "default" interface. Has a good strong signal to all areas of the house (mine is located in the basement). Dual band (even though I don't have anything that utilizes the 5ghz band at this time). Has a USB port for a media drive.

Cons: The stand is a bit cheesy if you want it to stand on it's end but I have mine laying down flat, so the stand works great this way.

Other Thoughts: I highly recommend this router. If someone with average computer knowledge
such as myself can set it up with relative ease, just about anyone should be able to do it.

5 out of 5 eggsBest router I've ever owned

Pros: * Two separate wireless APs in one: 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz
* Nice FAST WiFi and Gb Ethernet
* Thoughtfully configured custom edition of DD-WRT (or load OpenWRT?)
* Easy to setup DNSMasq, shell access, flexible DDNS client, shell access, much more
* External USB drive performs pretty well, if file system configured appropriately (no NTFS!) ... I'm planning to attach a 1+TB drive on it for convenient local/remote file access
* Integrated DLNA media server / Windows-compatible Samba server / FTP /etc
* Low power consumption
* Convenient wall mount

Cons: * Tricky/non-obvious steps to get a PPTP VPN server working (but it does work)
* Base was not easily attached to unit for free standing use (can make it work, lay down or wall mount)
* It's weird to have physical switches for configuration settings like "router on/off/auto" and some media thing. Why aren't there switches for the settings *I* want to fiddle with?

Other Thoughts: I don't need to leave a server on all the time any more, due to the rich capabilities of this router. It's great, and I would recommend to anyone looking for a high-end router for home or small office. This might be more than you need, if the only thing you're doing is browsing the Internet over DSL - but even then, you might get a kick out of its cool features.

5 out of 5 eggsVery, Very Nice

Pros: Build Quality, 680MHz processor, more RAM than you will probably need. Runs cool at default settings.

The DD-WRT firmware contains everything you may want as well as a bunch more that you can but probably won't use. The USB is extremely handy for wireless setup.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: If you have noted some of the lower star reviews complaining about range, note that the range is easily adjusted in the Wireless Setup tab- default TX Power can be adjusted up.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for VPN use

Pros: --Powerful
--Easy to set up
--Stable
--Multi-voltage power brick

Cons: --It's not free

Other Thoughts: Set this up, flashed to the newest firmware, and then set up with OpenVPN config files online. Worked right away, and worked when I transported it overseas and used it there. Crazy powerful, had to shut off the SSID broadcast to keep from hotel complaining that I set up my own sub-network. Plan to buy a second as a backup.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Value for Software/Network Engineers

Pros: For anyone that really knows what they are doing with networking and the linux command line, this router combined with OpenWRT installed is an amazing value.

* Port based VLAN tagging.
* The OpenWRT OPKG package manager and repository with all sorts of goodies. Happy to find prepackaged zabbix2.0 agents.
* All sorts of web/file servers available.
* Fine grained manipulation of wireless attributes
* 32MB of flash to install your favorite scripting language for automation and leaving tons of room for installing other software packages (relative to other routers, especially for the price).
* 128MB of ram keeps the system running smooth with all the different services you may setup running concurrently.
* iptables and ip6talbles netfilter firewall management.

Just a small fraction of what you can do with it.

Cons: The only con would be that it doesn't come with OpenWRT in the first place and that you have to install that yourself if you want more capabilities.

Other Thoughts: I have the C0_B2 hardware version mentioned in the OpenWRT wiki. Installation really wasn't bad at all if your know your stuff. Just set an ethernet port on a laptop/desktop to 192.168.11.2 (router defaults to 192.168.11.1). Have a ssh client and server running on the laptop/desktop. SSH to the router and from there SCP the OpenWRT firmware from the laptop/desktop to the router. Then run the "mtd" command mentioned in the C0B2 section of the OpenWRT wiki for this router. Done.

1 out of 5 eggsIf you want dd-wrt, stay away!!!!

Pros: If you stay SIMPLE, the dd-wrt software works

Cons: Stay away!!!! I'm an IT guy and know a great deal about routing. I spent many long nights trying to get it working correctly and I give up. I'm looking at buying another router from someone else.

I bought the WZR-600d after my WZR-HP-G300NH stopped working (300 hangs, and only syncs with cable modem after booting both). I loved my 300 with the dd-wrt features and bought the 600 thinking it was an upgrade. Now I'm thinking of buying another 300, but not sure that their buggy software will be on it.

The preinstalled 600 dd-wrt is buggy and doesn't work.
I use it as a gateway with openvpn (routed) and "Firewall Builder" to configure the router's firewall policies and NAT redirects. Both which worked like a charm on the 300 now don't work on the 600.
Here are a list of issues:
• LAN routing between subnets with the router being the gateway doesn't work (can't get to the internet). And yes I added the subnet routes via advanced routing).Results in no openvpn hosted on the router or from my server.
• The dd-wrt guys messed with the Linux IP command. They removed the show logic. So utilities like Firewall Builder ( that makes gateway config a charm) don't work. They can't query interfaces. So I had to manually configure the NAT tabled.
• The NAT configuration is a pain. The GUI interface is amateur, terrible and problematic. Documentation terrible. Try removing a nat entry, and it only allows you to remove the last one in the table. You need to hack to get the setting working. I find turning off the firewall makes the nat redirection work better.
• The openvpn GUI config doesn't preserve the netmask
• Going to Buffalo discussion board for help and found others with similar issued that have no responses. Guess they don't monitor their own forums.

I'm going to pull this router and use something else.

John

Other Thoughts: Fix dd-wrt or revert to an earlier version (like the one on the 300.

1 out of 5 eggsI got the lemon!

Pros: Newegg:
Their customer service rocks! That's why I've been a loyal customer for over 10 years!
(See more in the 'Other thoughts' section below.)

The Router:
It was easy to configure and put out great signals.
The open-source firmware is easy to configure and get running to your specs.

Cons: The antennas on top feel flimsy and of poor construction. One popped loose while I was adjusting it.

The 5GHz band worked for about 4-5 days and then the transmitter would cut out about 70% of the time and then went dead. Buffalo's service techs tried to help me over the phone but it was no use. The last time I called them I was on hold for about 40 minutes with no one to respond to... just canned music and the occasional obnoxious "Please hold on... someone will be with you shortly."

Other Thoughts: After the 5GHz band went out I called Newegg Customer Service. They immediately issued me a prepaid UPS shipping label via email then I shipped it back to them that day. They received it 3 business days later and I was issued a full refund the next day.

You just beat good customer service like this!
