4 out of 5 eggsNice unit, typical range

Pros: Easy to configure as a wireless-to-wireless repeater using step-by-step instructions downloaded separately from dd-wrt website. Allows me to move around the house while maintaining connectivity.

Many other configuration possibilities.

Cons: Range was similar and no better than other wireless routers that I've owned. Buffalo does sell a directional hi-gain antenna which could help, I'd consider trying that some day.

1 out of 5 eggswhat does this switch do

Pros: comes preloaded with DD-WRT

you can get through to tech support right away.

Cons: tech support is beyond clueless.

absolutely no documentation of what this switch does on the back of the router. Switch is labeled as "Router." Has three positions... ON, OFF, and AUTO.

Called tech support, got through to someone immediately. Unfortunately, he didn't seem to know what the switch does either. He gave some kind of confused explanation that the switch pertains to something to do with bridge mode, and maybe in one position the switch tells the router to act as a wired only router, in another position it will connect with another router (bridge mode???) if it's already programmed to do so, and in auto mode it will automatically connect with other routers? What?

I complained to the tech that this is a pretty confusing experience getting a router with no documentation on what this switch does. He said he gets that complaint all day long.

Yet another company that doesn't provide the basic service and information the customer needs.

Awesome.

Manufacturer Response:

Sorry for the inaccurate reply from our tech support. The on, off, auto function is to switch between router and access point. In the on position it will be a wireless router. In the off position it will just be a access point. The auto function will let the WHR-300HPdetect if there is another router on the WAN port and shut off the routing capabilities if needed to avoid conflicts.

please contact me if you have further questions.
Thanks

2 out of 5 eggsToo many negatives

Pros: Stock DD-WRT. Now I have to find another router.

Cons: Recessed antenna ports, couldn't use my tp-links. What's the use of removable antennas when only yours will work?

Setting the router switch to off didn't take effect until latest firmware was installed. Then I wasn't able to access the interface any more even when setting a static IP. I can't even configure it any more.

Manufacturer Response:

Please send me an email to help troubleshoot your router. This unit uses RP-SMA type connectors for the removable antennas. RP-SMA is the most common antenna connection available. This router is rock solid and easy to update. If you are having problems then the router may need to be replaced. Luckily your router has a 3 year warranty.

thanks

1 out of 5 eggsNot Very High Power

Pros: Small foot print.
Lots of features.

Cons: Not very High Power, would hardly reach outside of my house even though it was next to a window!
Tried various settings but could not get any of my PC's, phone or Tablet to connect any higher than 54mps.
Not worth the money...

5 out of 5 eggsOpen Source!

Pros: Good price, open source, and shiney.

Cons: Doesn't seem to quite have the range of my old Buffalo G router with Tomato.

Other Thoughts: I wish I could flash it with Tomato, but DD-WRT seems to work well and has the same features from what I can see.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat router

Pros: Bought this for connecting 5 computers, 2 xboxes, and various smart phones wirelessly from three floors away. I replaced removable antennas with stronger ones. Replaced a amped wireless r10000 and I still get full signal.

-Open NAT on multiple xboxes simultaneously.
-Four bar connection from three floors away( using my own antennas)
-setup took about 5 minutes, only setting you need to change is ssid name and password for wifi and web interface.
-handles upnp correctly, allowing open NAT on two xboxes, something my r10000 which costs double failed to do.

Cons: Some users may find the web interface difficult to understand. The purpose of buying this router, for me, was the easy access to ddwrt firmware on a cheap router. I personally find the web interface easy to understand as an experienced user. All you need to do is follow the instructions first time you open the page and it will tell you everything to do. Ignore advanced features you don't understand.

-unit is very light, prone to falling over if you don't mount with provided screws.

Other Thoughts: Happy with my choice, it's a relief to get open NAT on my xboxes as I no longer disconnect from matches every few minutes, or at all. Also happy to be able to use my own antennas as most stock ones don't give good signal three floors away

4 out of 5 eggsNew router

Pros: I like it ! Price is right! Simply to setup but don't forget ur new I'd & password or u have to reset it . Just replace my Belkin N 750.

Cons: Reset button is hard to find. Under the unit use a small pin head pin. 2 mm. Thick. I just got it! Time will tell if it could handle 4 iPhone , 2. iPad , 1laptop & done desktop?

Other Thoughts: No USB connection? Can't find the icon for the router on my desktop if its on or active!! Changing the time zone is confusing. UTC ? What's that?

5 out of 5 eggsGood things come in small packages.

Pros: Has DD-WRT, out of the box
Small footprint
B/G/N connectivity

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Has a small footprint.
5 1/2 x 4 5/8 x 3/4 (without antennas)
9 3/8 x 4 5/8 x 3/4 (with antennas extended)
3 7/8 (antenna length)

I love DD-WRT, not because I need it, but because of the options, it provides. The WHR-300HP was very easy to setup for basic connectivity. I had my other wireless devices connected, in no time. This is a small router, as you can see by the specs, I've posted. So far, I've had no issues.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: none

Cons: This was supposed to be high power. I had this positioned 7 feet from an outside wall. I went outside about 15 feet away and did not have enough signal strength to even get online. I was told before purchasing this by Bufflo that it would reach about 100 feet. I changed the security settings and could not get online even with a Lan line. I changed the security settings back and could not get online ever again.

Other Thoughts: Spend the extra money and get something better.
