Rating: 5/5Easy to setup, excellent range, RADIUS capable
Pros: * Aesthetically pleasing design * Easy to setup (see other thoughts, though.) * Very fast wireless speeds * Excellent range * Seems very stable * POE capable
Cons: * Setup can initially be confusing because no documentation is included. * Admin password change is on the same page as SSID, but with a separate SAVE button. Saving the SSID will not save any admin password changes.
Other Thoughts: This is a really professional looking unit.
Apparently their target demographic is an experienced network admin, which might be safe to say. That being said, a little bit of documentation stating that you must use their configuration utility to set up the unit would have gone a long way. Once you download the AirStation Configuration Tool, setup is super easy.
Here's how you get their tool (and yes, it leaves a LOT to be desired:) Go to their buffalotech site, Support & Downloads, Downloads, search for WAPS-APG600H. You should see a "Quick Setup Guide" - click on that. In that PDF, you should see a section called Software Installation which has a couple of links under it. Choose the correct one. Click the "I accept the Software License Agreement" box, then download the AirStation Configuration Tool. I didn't need the "Client Manager V", so unless you need it to use AOSS, I don't believe it's used for anything else.
I have this setup in a small office to allow laptops and smart phones to connect. It's nice to automagically have the smart phones connect to help take some stress off cell phone data plans. Speed tests show that I'm saturating our 35mb/s internet feed with other users connected, so I'm confident this sill handle lots of simultaneous heavy-traffic users using WPA2. We never experienced any connectivity issues once setup.
Keep in mind that this is NOT A ROUTER. It does not do DHCP or firewalling. This is a wireless access point for use within your network, most likely a business environment. Their use of RADIUS is very good, so people can use their logins to access your business network.
If you're in the market for a quite affordable, stable and fast access point for your business or possibly remote part of your home, this is an excellent product. I would recommend it without hesitation.
Pros: It's got good specs. 300+300 Gigabit LAN VLAN Tagging Dual Band antennas can be replaced 2 year Warranty
Cons: difficult configuration no poe injector average range sub par antennas cant boost signal WPS on by default is a security risk (maybe not with dd-wrt)
Other Thoughts: I have tried to review this on 3 different days and just didn't have enough time to figure it out. This is my main problem with it:
It comes with no CD, just a little quick install guide. Which is fine if it was all you need. I want to type in 192.168.1.1 admin password and go from there.
Instead the guide says: start the air station configuration tool blah blah blah blah
I try a bunch of ip's from a browser with no luck
so, I go to the website shown here (buffalotech dot com) and get into wireless/business class/this thing/download
and find the only executable in there is client manager
I download that, install it, and it does nothing but install some startup program that pops up it's name by the clock and has no uninstall in the folder.
so, I download the quick setup guide thinking maybe they changed something, no luck.
I get the manual thinking maybe there is a manual way to login to this thing without software.
It basically say the same thing. Start the air station configuration tool.... but on page 10 of 100 it shows you where to go in japan to get the air station configuration tool.
so i get it, but i notice the drop down defaults to XP, so I get it again (need to checkbox agreement before download shows up)
I install it. It asks if you want to enter the web amin interface or give it an IP address. I try enter the web amin interface with no luck, go back give it an IP, then finally I get into this thing.
I just don't have time to mess with stuff like this in the field. I want to plug a laptop into this thing, give it a password and plug a POE injector in the wall near the ethernet wall jack and have 2 ethernet cables in the box (1 in off white that will reach the ceiling) and go.
Thats why its 200 bucks. I can buy a dd-wrt router for 100 and mess with it quicker and have it's power brick stapled to the wall too.
They just don't get their customer with this. I want fast, secure, better range, and pretty.
These are for Doctors Offices and such. They don't care that it's 100 or 150 more, but they want it to be easy and pretty. I want it to be easy and secure.
It's a decent piece of equipment. I just would rather use a dd-wrt router. What would make it worth the difference to me would be to be able to log straight into it with a laptop before it gets an ip (and have those directions in the box) and I want a POE injector. Then I don't care what it costs, because I'm not buying it anyway (and time is money)
Again, it's a decent piece of equipment.
I just want fast and pretty in this price range.

Pros: The Buffalo WAPS-APG600H is a pretty powerful access point. Designed for both enterprise and home use, it has a very large number of configuration options while providing great range and speed.
Speed is fantastic on this device, pushing approximately 75 Mbit/s over 2.4Ghz Wireless-N and about 115 Mbit/s over 5Ghz Wireless-N at 20 feet from the base station (0 walls). Moving out to around 75 feet (1 wall) proved that this station could maintain speeds around 22 Mbit/s.
The best parts of this Access point are all under the hood, in the management and access control features. Because this unit is designed for more professional setups, I was able to connect to my RADIUS server within minutes with full support for 802.1x with EAP authentication. If you require strict QoS controls, this unit also has WMM support, which allows for much more detailed bandwidth control on video, voice and background traffic.
The hardware Ethernet ports on this device are configurable to connect to separate VLAN IDs with both 11g and 11a routable to separate VLANs. The configuration was simple and painless, with changes taking effect immediately after clicking apply (no reboot required). The added Management port is also a huge benefit, as it gets its own IP address on the network and can be managed from a separate VLAN, allowing for separation from a client network. Logging on this device is also a little more in depth, allowing you to transfer all logs to a Syslog server or an attached USB device.
All of the above features combined create a very powerful enterprise level access point. The access controls and logging make me feel safe that even if I set this up in a public place, I could still have control over who can access different parts of my network.
Cons: This access point is powerful all around, and my only complaint is with the interface of the management console. The pages can occasionally appear unresponsive, but a refresh of the page makes dead links work again. Other than this, everything works great and I haven't experienced another hiccup yet.
