1 out of 5 eggsAvoid at all costs

Pros: Functional paperweight
Wired connection is great

Cons: WiFi is next to worthless
Factory reset does nothing
Buffalo RMA process is pitiful

Other Thoughts: I bought the original WZR-600DHP in November of 2012. It was great when I first hooked it up. Lightning fast, solid WiFi. After about 10 months it would no longer obtain a connection from my modem so I RMA'd the unit. That process was a giant cluster with multiple calls to Buffalo before I finally received my replacement router.

The replacement worked great for about a year until the WAN ports died. RMA'd again. Again, Buffalo's site never showed the received it. Communication between tech support and the warehouse is only accomplished via email at Buffalo. They literally cannot just call the warehouse for a status update. They ended up overnighting my replacement.

Received my replacement on 8-14-14. It will be going back via RMA on 8-18-14. WiFi is dead out of the water. CONSTANT drop outs. The 5GHz band no longer broadcasts. Updated the firmware. That changed nothing other than the GUI. But, the WAN ports work.

This will be my 4th Buffalo router in under 2 years. It will also be my last. I highly advise you to reconsider your purchase. I understand some units have problems, but 4 units in 21 months?!?!

3 out of 5 eggsGood Hardware, Frustrating Software

Pros: - Dual-band N
- ARMv7-based chipset is fast
- Wireless Bridge Mode capability built-in
- Some nice extras like USB port that can turn it into a media server
- Those extra features still work in wireless bridge mode, which is nice
- Buffalo-provided software is very capable
- Stock firmware is Linux-based and can be accessed at command-line with the right tricks (see Other Thoughts)

Cons: - Very difficult, if not impossible to upgrade to DD-WRT (possibly due to a firmware bug in 2.09, which might be fixed in 2.13)
- Poorly written documentation that buries important points and requires a lot of guesswork.
- Changing it into Wireless bridge, AP, or wireless extender mode is only possible by pushing a "mode" button on the back of the router a certain number of times. The lights don't make it terribly easy to tell what mode you're in, and it changes default IP address between certain modes.

Other Thoughts: I bought this intending to flash it to use it as a wireless bridge (take existing 5Ghz wireless network and turn it into wired ethernet ports for my office.) It comes with no real documentation, and the GUI interface gives no indication that wireless bridge mode is even an option, so I tried to flash it to DD-WRT.

I have Buffalo firmware v2.09 on it, and I followed exactly what others had done to get this model with that firmware to flash to DD-WRT, but no success. It even went through the flash process with the progress bar and declared success, but always back to the same stock firmware. Eventually, I looked at Buffalo's site and the release notes for the newer update of firmware 2.13: they fixed a bug that prevents flashing the firmware in that version sometimes. Presumably, that means the bug existed in my device at 2.09, so I'm guessing my device is in the "sometimes" for that bug.

I also noticed that they claimed the stock firmware supported wireless bridge mode, so I downloaded and picked through the very long official manual. Lo and behold, the mode button and nothing else can change it to wireless bridge mode. It was not a particularly user-friendly experience, but I did get it into wireless bridge mode and configured properly without too much trouble after that. It's working like a champ right now.

If you are really set on using DD-WRT firmware, I suggest getting the WZR-600DHP2D (extra "D" on the end) That supposedly comes with a buffalo-modified version of DD-WRT preinstalled, and presumably allows upgrade to other DD-WRT versions. Newegg has it listed as out of stock as I write this, but if they don't have it in by the time you're looking, I can confirm it exists in the wild... They do price that version higher than the non-"D" version. If you want to save cash, maybe try upgrading the stock buffalo firmware on this one to 2.13 if 2.09 doesn't work for you using the webflash with DD-WRT 23503 or later. I haven't tried it, but others have credibly claimed that they were able to get this working.

NOTE: If you use the special secret admin account it gives you some extra links with options like enabling telnet on the router under Advanced ->Admin -> System. That didn't help me DD-WRT the router, but it is nice to be able to access the shell.

It took many frustrating hours to get this to do what I wanted it to, which was a pretty basic wireless bridge function. Yes, I should have RT"F"M earlier, but info about basic mode changing functions shouldn't be hidden that far in the (online only) documentation. Also, there should just be an option to change the mode in the GUI itself, not just through a push-button that has to be pushed in some secret sequence. Lose two eggs for that.

1 out of 5 eggsMissing WDS Feature

Pros: I like buffalo tech but....this model is a dud.

Cons: Missing WDS feature...manual has it listed...really helpful phone tech...returned router because "WDS" is not there, where the manual and other models have it. I need this feature for my LAN.

v2.13 has bug where the UI for some pages have funny text.

Other Thoughts: I really like buffalo because their WDS has WPA2 with possible speed upto 300Mps. Their competitors are in the dark ages with WEP at max 54Mps..

And buffalo's models operation time usually rocks but this one...what a waste...I later got different model.

2 out of 5 eggsbuffalo not what it used to be

Pros: Decent signal strength but questionable signal to noise

Cons: No Firmware download available
Buffalo customer service has gone down the tubes

Other Thoughts: This is the latest from buffalo, but so new they don't even have the firmware available on the website. No problem right? Tech support should be able to hook you up - WRONG. Tech support by email and phone are not even familiar with this device yet and think it is still international only (US drivers completely different btw). It will run DD WRT, but word of caution, you can't currently get the native firmware (Buffalo no longer using DD WRT) back on the unit because there is no where to download it.

Signal is okay, but signal to noise ratio not nearly as good as my old 54G unit.

Also, no antenna hookup on this.
