5 out of 5 eggsSimple & Works

Pros: Installation is simple. Read the short easy-to-understand Owner's Manual and install their software CD. Worked the first time. Printer is a Canon Pro9000. Supplied CD will support XP/VISA/Win 7. If your OS is Windows 8.0/8.1, go to Hawkings web site and download the software Version 2.23 - Windows 8 compatibility. Like the Auto-Connect feature. With the software update, the HMPS1U is working with XP, Vin 7 and Win 8.1 CPU's.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Next time I need a print server, Hawking will get my business.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Supports scanners and Usb drives? Appears to be a shared USB server rather than a printer server.

Cons: New Eggs Claims this support: DHCP, IPP, Raw TCP, LPR, SMB, SNMP, UPnP, FTP

There seems to be no way to setup and printer to IPP nor LPR out of the box and in another review the manufacturer admitted certainly that LPR is not support, yet NewEgg lists it as a support protocol. For the record DO NOT SAY that a PRINT SERVER support LPR/IPP/SMB/SMNP unless it actually provides those services in a generic manner to normal clients of such protocols. Anything else is gravely mistaken at best or lying at worse.

1 out of 5 eggsbad customer service, average tech support

Pros: worked with my Canon PIXMA MP780 sometimes

Cons: I just got off the phone with Customer Support for Hawking Tech after trying Tech support for this product yesterday.

I had wanted to set a static IP on the device but could not login to change any setting. I followed the instructions from the support engineer but the device could not be reset back to default settings. Since I first logged in to set a static IP, the device has been unreliable and partly defective at best.

Other Thoughts: I had previously called within the warranty period and was not offered a replacement when it was clear that the device was not functioning fully. The support engineer I spoke to within the warranty period managed to put me off long enough with a workaround (setting up a new IP port under Windows XP) and an unwillingness to offer another solution (my mistake to not push harder) and now the product has completely failed (of course, outside the warranty period). HawkingTech refuses to offer a replacement now, hiding behind their warranty policy, when their own support logs show that the device was defective during the warranty period. On top of all this, the support engineer yesterday said my only recourse was to purchase the product again.

My other option is to warn everyone about a company that is unwilling to issue a replacement under questionable circumstances where they admit a defect in the warranty period rather than take an opportunity to win a loyal customer.

1 out of 5 eggsnot as expected

Pros: Works great for a single computer that needs to print over a network connection. Fast and efficient. The device appears to be well-built and designed.

Cons: Does not work well for the common scenario of multiple computers needing to share a USB printer. This device does not provide an LPR port. Instead, it installs a Windows device driver that appears to Windows as a USB printer. The device driver apparently delivers the data to the Hawking print server without LPR. Then it prints. For multiple users, each user has to manually "connect" and "disconnect" using the included Windows software. If you want a simple LPR port on the network, this is not the device you want.

Manufacturer Response:

Sorry that we could not support LPR. The HMPS1u doesn't support LPR because it uses a control center software installed on each computer that creates a virtual USB port on each computer. This is done because the print server also supports the multifunction printer aspects such as scanning and faxing. LPR printing wouldn't support this. We will look into whether we can implement the LPR feature in the future. Thank you for your feedback.

Pros: Works well, Small, Easy Install

Cons: Had to used software included, instead of just adding TCP/IP Printer.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks as designed

Pros: small, easy to set up and works as designed

Cons: Should be designed to work with multiple accounts on windows 7.

Other Thoughts: As long as you are only printing, you don't need the supplied control software. The printer properties should be set to use the HMPS1U printer port that the driver creates, then it works fine for all accounts. the automatic connection didn't work so well with multiple accounts using the control software. I use the control software only when I want to scan from the multifunction printer, then I exit the software to resume normal printing usage to let other accounts print to the assigned port. it took a little while to figure out the best settings, but it works fine.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with LaserJet 3050 both printer and scanner Win 7 64-bit

Pros: - Small nice hardware (little bigger than matchbox size)
- Works with both printer and scanner features of multi function printer
- Works with Win 7 64-bit

Cons: - It didn't work with my printer (LaserJet 3050) out of box (see other thoughts) and cost me extra half an hour to setup

Other Thoughts: This was the cheapest print server I could find online (50 bucks shipped). I used another Hawking product (directional wifi antenna) in the past and I was happy with it so I gave another shot. It works beautifully with HP LaserJet 3050 USB printer / scanner. Please note that this printer is not in the list of supported printers list of manufacturer. Maybe that's why it didn't work out of box but when I upgraded the firmware to 2.33 it recognized the printer and worked fine. I tested on both Win 7 64 and 32 (print and scan). Software is very nice.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Polished Interface

Cons: List of compatible printers is really small. What's more, just because one printer is compatible does not mean the next closest model will work. Call them and find out if your printer is compatible BEFORE you buy!

Other Thoughts: Would be awesome if it was more compatible. When I asked a tech support supervisor why it wasn't compatible, I was told it was because it uses proprietary communication protocols. Wonder why it's so hard to support more printers like most MFP print servers claim to.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertised ...

Pros: Works as advertised with Epson All-in-1s like my CX4200. Somewhat complicated setup - have to follow the setup sequence. Got good reviews from others.

Cons: Complex setup software. Had to juggle the home network restart sequence to get "everybody" working again. Initially lost my VOIP line when I used it; reconnecting, rebooting cleard the problem.

Other Thoughts: Pricey. NewEgg service is superb!! My IT vendor of choice! Very much like the featured comments of previous users.
