- Pros: great range extension
cheap
- Cons: annoying high pitched whine -- easily fixed
would have been nice to ahve a longer extension cable
- Other Thoughts: grwat product -- really extends the range of g networks.
went from 2 to 5 bars in 1 location and from 0 to 2 bars in another.
High pitched noise is very annoying -- but i just wrapped 2 inch thick foam around it and duct taped the whole thing and voila no noise
doesn't appear to get hpot enough to be an issue -- but i am checking specs as we write
works for my situation...
- Pros: Max (500mW) setting does increase signal strength when replacing the Routers oem antenna with the hawking unit
(see below by how much)
- Cons: Versus my existing PC setup using a high gain directional antenna:
Low (100mW) setting did not show up on a scan
Med (200mW) setting showed same signal strength as oem antenna on router
Slightly audible high frequecy buzz coming from amplifier when plugged in. Its one of those situations where you don't hear it from 5 feet away but if you turn your head this way or that, you can hear it a little bit... more annoying than an issue as my dog doesn't seem to be bothered by it.
- Other Thoughts: My setup:
Recieving pc sits in a far SW corner bedroom of a 4K sf one story house, has an SMC directional 6dB antenna aimed through 7 walls to the farthest NE corner home office. The office router (D-Link DI-624) had the oem antenna. Without the SMC 6dB antenna, the pc recieved no signal, with the SMC antenna it ranged from 45-51% Signal strength and 11-18Mbps transfer rate. With the H2B2 booster on the router at 500mW, I got 63-67% signal strength but no increase in xfr rates. When I moved the H2B2 to the top of the desk hutch (about 2 feet higher than where it was in the first test, the signal strength dropped down to 53-57% but my xfr rates doubled to 24-36Mbps.
I ended up leaving it in the higher position for the higher xfr rates not to mention the high pitch noise was less apparent.
Originally, I considered getting another SMC 6dB antenna for the router but I decided that was too dedicated. Using the H2B2 allows me to use my wireless laptop anywhere throughout the house now
