- Pros: Really inexpensive for Wireless N + Gigabit.
- Cons: Like many other users have stated, it's extremely hot. This causes the router to drop the wireless signal from time to time, and actually even the wired connection fails. I have to reset it once or twice a day. I wish I'd have just done it right and bought a reputable brand. It's going to be hard to convince the wife we need ANOTHER new router when this one is only 4 months old.
The problems started about 2 months in, in case anybody was wondering.
Not bad at all.
- Pros: So many options. It's in the same league as $80+ routers in terms of features. Even WDS capable.
Very good signal. 5 bars everywhere inside my 1300+ sq ft. apt.
Very good speed. 15MBps in mixed mode WITH security enabled is the best I've seen in a $40 router. Instant playing of music & video between n150-300 devices. N 300 get 270Mbps in mixed mode and 300 in pure N mode.
Outer build is solid. It's metal so it feels more solid, like those wired routers from 1999 and business routers....a far cry from the plasticy stuff we're used to now. It's thus warmer than your typical dlink/linksys but I havent experienced it being hot.
- Cons: Fugly gui. Oh goodness, ugly. Like a web page straight out of 1994.
First run isn't "plug n' play" like most other modern routers. Doesn't 'stick' onto your dsl/cable modem like most others do. You need to manually set an IP and login. Also, save 10 mins and reset it out of the box. I tried using the quick guide to set it up and just could not get in. Finally I decided to reset it, and voila, got in fine.
Ugh...did I mention fuuuuuugly gui!? If DDWRT can look so nice then this is just laziness. Alas, looks arent everything....and the price and features outweigh my gui issues.
Non intuitive lights. The ONE thing I liked with the belkin I had was the lights changed color and blinked if there was an issue with the related area. These lights are just, there. But thats not a real problem anyway.
- Other Thoughts: I live in a 2 bedroom 1300sq ft. apt. and I get close to 100% signal everywhere, that's 5 bars on XP/Vista/7 all the time. Was getting 3/4 and sometimes 5 on my Belkin. I have a HTPC and several laptops which feed from it and where there used to be a minute or 2 on starting up playlists from a 'fresh' boot on the laptops, it's now instant. Likewise, copying to/from said PC is also much faster, almost 15MBps which is awesome considering the fact that I'm not channel bonding, am running on a mixed network so my G stuff still works AND am using wpa and wpa2 for security/compat. I'm a happy camper.
Some things to note: Reset the router out of the box. I spent 10 minutes trying to access it and it wouldn't work. 1 reset fixed it. Also, upgrade to the newest fw asap.
I'm probably the one person on here not being affected by the router being 'hot'. It's warmer than all-plastic routers but is metal so that's understandable.
Nice Router
- Pros: Plenty of options, default gateway address did not work well with one of my old 98 machines. Changed the address in the menu to 198.168.0.1 from 198.168.1.2 and was off and running. Firewall works fantastic. Has good wireless range. Haven't lost a connection through Comcast since I set up.
- Cons: LED's are brighter than needed, does run warm to the touch, but so did the Trendnet TEW-432BRP. Took a spray can cap and put it under the router to let air under the unit, seem to run a little cooler.
- Other Thoughts: Fast menu access, unlike the Trendnet.
