Tips for Optimizing your Powerline Performance

The theoretical maximum channel data transfer rate is derived from HomePlug AV specifications. Actual data transfer rates will vary according to a network environment's distance, traffic, noise on electrical wires, quality of electrical installation and other adverse conditions. In order to ensure the satisfaction of HomePlug AV powerline products, we recommend

1. Plugging the Powerline adapter directly into the wall plug without using a power strip or surge protector

2. Using the Powerline adapter within the same power grid as the router.

5 out of 5 eggsDefinitely better than the 200s

Pros: - Small enough to use other outlet
- easy access security button
- gigabit ports
- price was right.

Cons: - Came with cat 5 cables. Probably fine for this application, but I recommend Cat6 everywhere.
- Software doesn't have that "polished" feeling compared to D-Link.

Nothing worth fussing over.

Other Thoughts: Bought 4 of these (2 kits) to replace 4 D-Link DHP-307's (200Mbps). Actual throughput (not 'software stated' connection speed) went from 5-6 MegaBytes/s to 19-20 MB/s using large file copy. Same (Cat6) cables, same outlets.

I also noticed speed gains with these units when I unplugged my X-10 Hardware (think power line for light control). I didn't re-test the D-links.

These fit into outlets much better.

Articles on the chipset used imply that these should work with Wake-on-Lan. I haven't tried that yet, but it would be another nice bonus, as the D-Link's definitely didn't.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: I have had these for 3 months now, no problems at all. I ran a constant FTP and ping flood test from one end to the other for a couple hours, I got 485 mbps with very few packet drops. I have not had to unplug/power cycle them a single time and I have yet to see any issues.

Cons: With a single particular switch devices (older portwell switch) the duplex settings would not negotiate properly after a reboot of the switch. This would happen about 10% of the time. I do not think it is big enough an issue to mark it as a con. Every other device has worked perfectly.

Other Thoughts: Own over 10 of these. No failures or issues.

3 out of 5 eggsSo So

Pros: Works

Cons: ANY power intensive device in the same outlet will render connection useless
Speed averaged mid 50Mbps, which is on the low end relative to some of the other 500Mbps kits out there
Manual was not great
Looks like firmware is still in version 1.0

Other Thoughts: I live in a new apartment. Didn't want to put in the effort to wire up the place as I didn't know how long I'd live there.
Plugged these in, and with an old laptop sharing the outlet, connection dropped every second. When I removed the laptop plug, connection worked fine.
I used the free totusoft lan test program. Max throughput was in the high 50's from living room to bed room, about 40 feet. Both computers recognized a gigabit ethernet connection, with the only intermediary being an Asus RT-N56U router. With an older laptop running w/ a 100Mbps NIC, speed was ~35Mbps.
This is obviously a lower price competitor compared to the other options out there, so I expected a somewhat worse performance. However, I am somewhat disappointed that the performance drop was so significant. smallnetbuilder.com has a chart of AV kit speeds, and most of the 500Mbps kits hit > 80Mbps. So the ~55Mbps speeds I got was >30% slower. Speeds were quite similar to the Actiontec kit which is at the same price point.

On a Mbps/$ basis, this unit was in line with the others, but it wasn't the bang for the buck purchase that I thought it would be. However, it was a step up from the 200Mbps kits. I'd say that if you were looking for a powerline product in between the 200Mbps and 500Mbps categories in terms of both performance and cost, this kit is an option.

3 out of 5 eggsMix Feelings

Pros: Worked good for a while, solid connection once you get it.

Cons: One of the units went out on he 3rd day, the more items you plug into the electrical circuit the less performance you can expect from this units.

Other Thoughts: The house is 5 years old, and I was able to get red lights (while it lasted) I could never get orange or green lights even though I rearranged all the items plugged to the walls, even with red lights I was able to stream 1080p 5.1 video without any problems.

1 out of 5 eggsChanged MY MIND !!!!

Pros: Woks Great, but not more than 1 Day

Cons: couldnt add, nor change my previous review about this adapter, So, I am writing a new one. THIS ADAPTER IS THE WORST !! my connection kept dropping / reconnecting every 5-10 seconds, the first day it was ok, next day, started, and now after almost 5 days, it is WORSE !!!!!, intermittent cuts All the time, and the speed (500Mbps) DONT EVEN DREAM ABOUT IT, the dadpters are in adjaecent rooms, and the Max speed I got the first day( as on the provided utility) was 130Mbps, Now after 5 Days, it is 71Mbps . I think I will return this to NEWEGG, and check for some Decent adapter, which can keep connections.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: First hours I used it, I was amazed, need it to reduce the congestion in my Wireless network, and this seemed like a good solution, wasent getting off my 20Mb subscription, more than 3Mb, when used this adapter, it reached 17Mb, was So easy to use, configure, worked just fine with a pair of Actiontec adapters.

Cons: The next day, it started Dropping connection, IE stopped working many times, showing no connection, then back again, all the time, THIS IS NOT WHAT I EXPECTED !!!

5 out of 5 eggsJust WOW !!!

Pros: Extremely Easy to set up, and use, Really improved speed, I couldnt get more than 7Mbps, From my Congested Wireless Network, although I am subscribed to the 20Mb, the speed reached 18Mb, with this small wonder, purchased it with a pair of ActionTec PWR500, no compatibility issue, all work fine, but this one has around 30% more speed than the Actiontec. anyway, this is my first Day using this, and my first Powerline adapter, So, I dont know what will happen next.

Cons: None So Far (after 1 day)

5 out of 5 eggsSuper fast

Pros: 6 of my 8 my Trendnet 303 rated 200 died all at the same time (dont know why) so I tried my brother in law's Rosewill 200s. Those 200s are much faster than my Trendnets so I go for the 500s and they are FAST. My kids are playing online games and I can still stream a 2Gb mkv to my bedroom with no slow down. the trendnet 303 could only stream small AVIs. They are very small. Got them on sale and they were cheaper than other 200s. 8^)

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Time will tell
