4 out of 5 eggsupdate !

Pros: this is a 3rd review update as I stated before in my last to reviews. Grate signal and range. but as suspected the problems I was having with being dropped. was a Comcast issue. bad Comcast modem ? so I have to reassure you all this is a pretty good little unit. definitely for Wi-Fi gameing

Cons: user inter face could use some improvement..

Other Thoughts: I wasn't fair in the last review and jumped to a wrong conclusion. sry

2 out of 5 eggsThere are better alternatives in this price range

Pros: As much as love to talk highly about something, this router just didn't really prove itself to be that great of a unit, at least not when compared to other units in the same price range, both retired and those still in retail channels.

I'll say that the range should be good enough for most households. I have the router in an upstairs bedroom that faces the front of the house. I took my iPhone 4s connected to the 2.4Ghz band and walked behind my backyard shed which is about 120ft away. The signal passed through at least 4 walls (including the outside wall) and behind my shed.
It also maintained a wireless connection speed of 270-300Mbps to my media server in the basement.

It also proved itself to be quite sufficient in handling network traffic. I essentially created a network flood by kicking off simultaneous 7GB transfers among 4 computers (2 wireless, 2 ethernet), meaning I was pushing 7GB per PC and thus receiving 7GB as well. While that was running, I fired up some 1080p video on my Roku3 box. To pile on a little more, I kicked off some "speedtest" tests on my mobile devices. At no time did anything ever lag or stutter. So for people that have console gaming systems in their house, the built in QOS on this unit shouldn't have any problems.

In further testing this unit, I set it up as a secondary router on the network and did a factory reset. Using the setup wizard, for all intents and purposes, it correctly identified it's place on the network and allowed it's connected devices out to the internet.

I also did some basic testing with the URL filtering and it seems to work about as well as you can expect. Filtered URLs simply won't load and sites that have 'keywords' also don't load. No filter is foolproof and if you get carried away trying to add a bunch of content, you'll slow everything down and end up filtering safe content. However, it's something that parents or administrators can play with as a simple means of restricting internet content.

Cons: Where to start? As others have noted, the initial setup wizard does not appear to properly negotiate anything. And just to be sure, I went through a factory reset twice. Same results- nothing.
At this point, your average Joe & Jane User would get frustrated. Afterall, it did come packaged with a rather nicely written quick setup guide. It was disappointing that it wasn't working.

To add insult on to that, there is no real built-in on-screen help to assist anyone in determining what all the settings mean. Most(?) routers nowadays have assisting paragraphs somewhere on the current settings screen giving you some idea of what it's function is. If you want to find out something about all the various settings, you'll need to refer to the included PDF on CD or download it from Rosewill's website. And even the PDF is somewhat sparse. I don't expect someone to learn everything about networking by reading a setup guide, but I've seen consumer routers with better on-screen help & descriptions.

Whenever you want to make a change to the router, you get the lovely "Wait 15 seconds" countdown. This gets old, fast. However, most of the time you can simply click to a different settings page, then click back and your changes are there. I'm guessing the 15 second wait is just a globally applied setting to cover areas that do take longer to internally reconfigure.

I like all the known devices on my network to have static IP addresses, so after first setting them all manually, I then went back and tried a few using the router's DHCP reservation system. While the functionality works, the setup is cumbersome. For example, the DHCP tables shows the MAC address in the format of ##:##:##:##:##:##, but right below you can't cut & paste because the reservation input field only allows for 12 characters, meaning no dividers. And once you have a large list of reservations, there's no way to sort the list. The order that you enter them is the way you have to search it. Granted, you can use the browsers search function, but that just seems less intuitive than a sortable HTML table.

I also had a problem with my Asus USB-N53 wifi adapter that is both 2.4 and 5Ghz. For whatever reason, it never negotiated more than a 54Mbps connection. In fact, it never even saw the 5Ghz SSID. But it works just fine on my other 5Ghz routers noted below. I double-checked both the adapter and router. Even the configuration menus deep-down in Device Manager looked correct.

Other things that stood out?
- I didn't see a place to change the "admin" login name, only the password. Being able to create a different login would be nice.
- When I changed the default internal IP addressing from 192.168. to a 10.0 network, it didn't automatically update the DHCP scope. Those should be dynamically linked together for ease of use and configuration.

Other Thoughts: All my PC's are running Win7 Professional x64.
My home/lab consists of the following network equipment either used in testing the T600N or used as a control/reference unit. (NewEgg SKUs where applicable).

Overall, this unit just doesn't impress, especially not in the price range which is currently $65. In order for something to be listed in the PROS section, it really needs to stand out for something. The fact that it appears "stable" or "does well in getting near it's theoretical transfer speed limits" is what one should expect; It shouldn't be a bonus at this price range.

As an Eggxpert Reviewer, we try to get our reviews up within 2 weeks of getting the unit. Unlike testing a single function device like a HDD/SSD or power supply, for me, two weeks is simply not enough time to fully test the capabilities of the unit, such as VPN passthrough, tinkering with QOS, hardware acceleration, DMZ utlization, port triggering/forwarding, etc. Also, this is by no means a commercial grade router, so doing a deep dive into those areas are places that most of you won't go, so it's not really relevant right now.
Given the fact that 1) it essentially failed the first OOBE ("Out Of Box Experience") FOR MULTIPLE REVIEWERS, which is to have the wizard get you up and running quickly, and 2) some of the other low-to-mid-level functions only received an "Ehhh" rating, doing a deeper dive didn't seem like good enough reason to go beyond the 2-week review period.

So...my final/other thought? A 2-egg rating. I'd pass on this one.
Does it work? Yes, for the most part. I'm certain for some, once it's configured, it would offer years of trouble-free operation and would probably garner a 5-egg rating. For those, it's "$65 well spent, no muss, no fuss."
Are there shortcomings? Absolutely. Would these shortcomings be deal-breakers? For some, yes. If anything at all, the shortcomings would be annoyances that would lead to calls to Rosewill or NewEgg's tech support. Nothing burns a buyer more than having buyers' remorse and having to eat the re-stocking fee and/or RMA return shipping fee. Those that would decide to keep it would likely always be second-guessing their purchase.

3 out of 5 eggsNice router, but mine had issues

Pros: Dual band allows you to get off the highly congested 2.4GHz range which may interfere with other appliances, or double your possible throughput.

Gigabit WAN, plus 4 gigabit LAN ports are a really nice feature, and with the way ISP speeds are taking off, they may be necessary before long.

Very good hard-wired throughput. Throughput maxed out at about 50% (50-60MB/s) for my setup, which is what I see with my existing gig switch, so that is likely due to limitations on one of the PCs I used for the test.

Pretty good wireless throughput. Both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands were configured to use WPA/TKIP security. When connected at 2.4GHz, my throughput maxed out at 45% of a 54MBps connection. When connected at 5GHz, my throughput maxed out at 52% of a 54MBps connection. Unfortunately, I don't have any 801.11n devices to test with this router.

Great range on 2.4GHz band. I had a perfect connection all over my house (router on second floor). Coverage in the yard was slightly degraded, but still very good. It wasn't until I walked several hundred feet away from the house that the signal fell off. I am confident I could connect to this router from any of my immediate neighbors houses, and probably even from another house away.

There is a neat real-time bandwidth monitoring screen

Cons: For some reason the unit I received will not automatically get a DHCP address from my cable provider, nor would it take one from my existing router. This was eluded to in another review here. For most people, this will be a show-stopper. I was able to test this unit further by noting my existing IP from my current router and statically assigning it to this one. Obviously, this is not normally an option.

While the wireless throughput is better than my existing 5 year old 802.11g router (which maxed out at about 32% of a 54MBps connection during the same test), I would have expected better from a brand new unit. I tried multiple copies from different sources, but could not get any more bandwidth out of a single connection. Again, it is possible that this is a limitation of the laptop I was testing with, but it is a pretty new laptop.

Not so great range on the 5Ghz band. Coverage was very good inside the house, but dropped significantly when taken outside. Walking around my back yard, the signal dropped off completely, and would not re-establish.

Like most home routers, the built in web configuration software is pretty poor. On this router, however, you are forced to wait 15 seconds after every change you make while it "restarts the module." The router doesn't actually reboot however, it just makes you wait. This gets pretty irritating during the initial setup, but probably won't be too bad long term.

You cannot configure time-of-use filters for LAN connections (ex: allow computer 1 to access the internet only between 8am and 11pm)

After only a short period of testing, the router and power pack were getting noticeably warm. By the end of my testing, they were both quite a bit warmer than I would have expected, leading me to believe that the life expectancy of the unit may be shortened as a result. You will definitely not be able to hide this router away in a confined space, it will need as much airflow as you can give it.

Some quirky English translations.

Does not support DD-WRT firmware (yet? fingers crossed).

Other Thoughts: Oddly, this unit does not have a default MAC address, which means you have to make one up, or hit the clone button to take the one from the computer you are using to configure it.

Cosmetically, the status lights are insanely bright, but they are on the top of the unit, so if you have it setting on shelf, as I did, you can't see any of them - aside from the area above it that looks like it's being targeted with an LED flashlight.

Based on the positive reviews here, I must assume that the WAN DHCP problem on mine is an anomaly, however I am still dinging it an egg. That being said, I would still recommend this to anyone who is adding a router to their network or is replacing a really old one. But, if you have a router you are happy with, I'm not sure this is worth it - especially if you get a bum one like I did, and have have to return it (I haven't yet, but I know Newegg is awesome about returns).

4 out of 5 eggsnot to bad

Pros: Wireless Range. I have used this Rosewill T600N Gigabit Router at thirty feet for gameing. on my wireless desktop computer it has an Asus Wireless adapter Model PCE-n13. 300Mbps 802.11b\g\n PCI-Wireless Adapter. and at thirty feet away from the unit I am pulling download speeds of 26.58Mb/s and upload speeds of 4.19Mb/s . this is with comcast modum and comcast sevice. so in my opinion. this has a nice rang and is very suitable for gameing and videos. this unit replaced a Netgear G54 Wireless router Model WGR614v10. and i have no gameing lag as i did with the Netgear unit.

Cons: the setup was not that grate. due to the fact the time and date in the router interface page was set to 2011 and it was suppose to auto download the time and date. which It did not do. so I linked it to my computer and tried it that way it would not let me change the time and date. it returned every time I tried. to the 2011 date and pacific standard time. so one more time I told it to get the time and date from the computer. it had a : at the end. so I back spaced it to remove it. and it finally took the right time and date. after four times. i have also used to other laptops and another compuer wire to the unit. with no issues. and with all four computers two desk tops and two laptops on the network i still get no lag in online games. :)

Other Thoughts: the web interface takes a good thirty to sixty seconds to save changes. and it isn't very user friendly I don't think. but that's just me I guess. but good for gameing

4 out of 5 eggsSolid wi-fi for the home

Pros: Real fast, can’t tell the difference between the wired network line and the wireless. I have Verizon Fios 75Mbps Download and 35 Mbps upload. I did the following tests using the website speed test. I was using the wireless that came with the Verizon router for the last few years.

Wired: 84.21 Mpbs Download, 28.77 Mbps Upload
Verizon Wi-Fi Fios (Old Unit): 7.97 Mbps Download, 9.57 Mbps Upload

Rosewill T600N Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz: 83.48 Mbps Download, 38.43 Mbps Upload

So there really is no difference between the wired and wi-fi anymore with the new unit. You can run both 2.4GHz and 5GHz at the same time as the unit has 4 antennas. Two external ones which are for the 2.4GHz and two internal ones that are used for the 5Ghz.

Setting it up was very easy, just remember you have to connect your PC directly to the unit to set it up and make sure you turn the security all the way up.

Cons: I was a bit disappointed in the range of the unit. The 5GHz actually has a shorter range than the 2.4 GHz and that is probably due to the antennas being inside the unit. I was only able to get a connection about 30 feet in any direction from my home. This may be a high issue as I do have the unit in the first floor of my home but it is not underground so it really should have worked. I assumed the 2.4GHz would have a similar range that a house phone does as the same frequency but it does not.

Other Thoughts: I tested the unit with a desktop using a wi-fi network card. Also tested it an Asus gaming laptop and finally used 2 cell phones for the final test which were Samsung Galaxy S2. The cell phones where the only ones that could connect to the device at 5GHz the laptop and desktop could only connect at 2.4 Ghz but that is a hardware/network card limitation.

4 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: Not bad as far as routers go. Antennas ensure complete coverage of average sized homes, as far as I have experienced. Not too pricey. For a router that covers almost all types of networking I mean. Works fine with all of the components in my household either wired or wireless. Decent encryption and firewall with selectable levels of security. Setup is 1diot-proof. Pretty much plug and play. Very little needed to get it up and running. My 11 year old daughter is getting into technology and wanted to learn some things, so I let her setup this home network. With very little guidance she set the whole thing up in under an hour. All of this with 11 devices in the house included in the setup. So very easy to use IMO. Activity lights are a plus. My old router didn't have them, making it impossible to tell if anyone was using the internet or not. This one has super bright LEDs that you can see from anywhere in the room, very nice.

Cons: At first randomly wouldn't let devices logon when first booted. I unplugged it once and reset the system, and no problems since. HUH? Oh well, now it works fine. Tried updating the firmware, but none can be found for it yet on the Rosewill website. Guess maybe it was just a glitch that fixed itself. For larger coverage areas you might want to look elsewhere. Covers my 1200 square foot home with no problems. 4-5 bars everywhere. Even get 3-4 bars outside. But might not work for a really large house or application though.

Other Thoughts: This replaced a netge@r 600 g/n router that would randomly kick you off. Didn't even get 5 bars when in the same room as that thing. This works flawlessly, except for the self fixing glitch I ran into. Handles three people using it at the same time for online gaming, streaming video, and just general browsing. I own a lot of Rosewill products, and none have ever let me down. A very trusted product name IMO. Let's hope this remains true for this little new addition to my home network.

1 out of 5 eggsNot for use with an isp

Pros: connected my network great at 300mbps

Cons: does not work with bright house modems. Had to call tech support at bright house to disable the wifi built into their modem, and set it permanently as a bridged modem only to find out that this router still will only throttle to 1.5 mbps download speed when hooked to bright house modems.

Other Thoughts: may work well with another isp, but if you have bright house do not buy this. I am rma now.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

It appears your modem was not just a plain modem but a modem/router which will cause conflict. What Bright House did is correct as only one of the two routers can be the one to control the network while the other acts like a switch. Please be advised the ISP may have not been the issue but the connection of the two routers was most likely the cause of the setup becoming a bit more challenging.

4 out of 5 eggsRosewill T600N

Pros: I bought this to replace an earlier Rosewill Gigabit router that was starting to show its age after 6+ years, This unit fit in the same location as the old one even using the same mounting screws and location.

The router comes with mounting screws and an Ethernet cable, although it is a bit short. Installation is quick and easy and took less than 15 minutes to complete. The most time was spent waiting for reloads of pages.

Cons: 1. The included Ethernet cable is short.
2. When setting up the router changes are made on individual pages. When each page is done the page is refreshed and it takes about 15 seconds for each refresh. If a reboot is required it takes about a minute. It would be nice to be able to make all the changes and then one reboot.
3. The LEDs are very bright and the case is very glossy black and fingerprints show easily.
4. The LEDs are only visible when looking down on the unit. I have the router mounted vertically on my floor joist in the basement. When I stand under it I can't see and lights. If it was mounted on a shelf at eye level or above you would also not be able to see the lights.

Other Thoughts: Overall it is a nice basic router. It has gigabit ports and dual band radios. The unit is in my basement and I have the power set at 50% and receive at 3 bars or higher anywhere in my 2400 sq ft house.

The new super saver shipping is terrible. Most of my stuff comes from Memphis. The 3 day shipping is usually here in 2 days. The DHL super saver was usually here in 2 to 4 days. The new FedEx service took 7 days this time and my last order took 9 days total.

I live 431 miles NNE from Memphis in west central Indiana. FedEx took it to MS, then Missouri, then to Indianapolis then 65 miles west to me for a total of 637 miles. It seems as if they were routing this around to keep from delivering this any earlier. Maybe this is done so Newegg will get more people to pay for the 3 day service instead. It seems that Newegg is slowing down on their service levels.
