5 out of 5 eggsTerrific!

Pros: Just works great! My laptop (Toshiba satellite) has an appallingly weak wifi receiver, I had to basically set it on top of the router to get useful signal, and it was worthless in hotel rooms.

I plugged in this antenna, with no setup required, and went from no reception in my back room to 5 bars. In fact I even pick up my neighbors signal now (not that I'd take advantage....;-).

This antenna delivers as promised and more. A great deal, and solved a very frustrating situation.

Cons: None. It comes in 3 pieces so keep them together.

3 out of 5 eggsAverage performance, good range

Pros: Pros:
- Affordable price
- Easy setup
- Compatible with most Windows based PC's
- Very good range, but expected with a large 5dBi external antenna

I've never understood why the more recent routers all use internal antennas. Perhaps it is mostly just a perception thing, but I've always felt external antennas were much better for range and performance. I am so glad the high end AC routers these days are back to external antennae. This wireless adapter has excellent range even through 3 walls/floors of my house!

Cons: Cons:
- Build quality feels a bit cheap
- Speeds are rather low for an "N" adapter
- No USB 3.0 support
- Occasional disconnects (not related to distance from source)

I have a feeling the slower speeds on this "N" adapter are from the lack of USB 3.0 and poor drivers. USB 2.0 only supports about 35 MB/s throughput. USB 3.0 supports almost 10 times that amount of bandwidth. While this device can support only about 20MB/s (still less than USB 2.0), I can't help but feel the speeds would have been improved with the newer generation of USB and better drivers.

Other Thoughts: Keep in mind that if you have Wireless G devices connected to the same router as a Wireless N device, you will end up with Wireless G speeds on all devices unless you have dual/multi-band routers.

Overall a good product for the price, and I do enjoy the range from the external antenna. But it is still a bit on the "cheap" side of quality and performance so it receives an "average" rating of just 3 eggs.

3 out of 5 eggsCheap/average

Pros: Small and simple.
Easy to setup.
Reliable*
Nice for older laptops stuck using b/g bands.

Cons: Range seems nice, although it is misleading. Despite showing strong signals or even max strength, the product will often slow to a halt or need a reconnect.
After a while of using the product you get a better feel for what the reliable range is.

Other Thoughts: *Assuming you are within range, it does a better job than other wireless cards that don't use an antenna (phones, most laptops, some PCI/PCIe cards, ect.) and for the current price of $15 it seems to be right where it should, although full price of $50 I would expect more. I feel 3 stars is appropriate considering $15 isn't standard price, at $15 a 4 would do, as it is cheap and reliable enough to cover any basic needs and may exceed some.

Other Thoughts: it could have had a longer cord.

1 out of 5 eggsjunk

Pros: none

Cons: connects automatically no matter what the settings are, makes connections WORSE. junk

Other Thoughts: Total waste of money. Connecting Wi-Fi through internal laptop is stronger and faster than this CONtraption. Using this junk makes signal and speed WORSE. Tried various settings, still JUNK.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi OwnsBusinesses,

We appreciate your time in posting your comments and feedback.

We are sorry to hear about your experience with the EUB9603H. The EUB9603H works best when both USB connectors are plugged in to the computer to provide the maximum power for improved range and performance. It is also recommended that the latest driver is installed for best compatibility and reliability. The latest drivers are downloadable from our website at www.engeniustech.com. If you do not want to connect to a particular SSID automatically you can simply disable the EUB9603H or make sure that the WiFi hotspot is not saved on the AP list if you are using the EnGenius WLAN Utility and the wireless profile on the default Windows wireless manager is set not to connect automatically.

If you have any questions regarding Engenius and our products you may reach us through our number at 1-888-735-7888 (Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 4:00pm PDT) or e-mail us at support@engeniustech.com (Saturday, Sunday 8am - 4pm PDT). Our support team would be glad to be of service to you.

Thank you for your patience and we apologize for the inconvenience.

Sincerely,

Engenius Customer Support Team

4 out of 5 eggsGood for Most Folks

Pros: Good price for a rather large coverage range and suprisingly it has been wonderful in just about every instance. I would really recommend this to anyone however if you read my cons below and if it doesn't match your current internet bandwidth, then by all means GET THIS!!!

Cons: The only gripe I have over this is that if I try to download with a bandwidth of 6MB or more, it stops working, or rather it stops sending/receiving data. It still shows that there is a connection however nothing goes in or out. I simply just have to disable(2 seconds) then enable(2 seconds) and I'm back!! However that is pitiful.

I found this out when I was Reinstalling World of Warcraft, 20GB download. I have Comcast Extreme 105 and when I'm wired in I get a down of 12-13MBps, however with this thing, as soon as I go over 5.8MB and stay in the 6+ zone for more than 10-15 seconds, it dies.

Sure I could always make a new SSID on my router and limit the band on it but that's pointless and stupid if you're going to pay $200 for the internet but can't make full use of it.

The wow install is threaded p2p download, but that has nothing to do with it, because I run a minecraft server and from time to time I have to back it up or download a backup from the cloud and its a single thread download and I still lose my connection.

Other than this one thing, It's a wonderful wonderful adapter.

Other Thoughts: I went through two of them and both of them died at the same area of my bandwidth. At the moment I'm just running an extender and a ethernet cord which works but is a bit of extra clutter I could do without.

4 out of 5 eggsComparison with Alfa AWUS036NHR

Pros: The 9603H uses the Realtek 8188S(U?) chip; Alfa uses the 8188RU high power chip. Both client apps are based on a Realtek code base. The Engenius registers as an Engenius device; the Alfa as a Realtek device. Comparisons were made with an Asus RT-AC66U AP/router, firmware 3.0.0.4.246 (latest). Signal was through two floors, near or at “100%”, link speed reported 72mb/s with both adapters without channel bonding. Throughput measured with LAN Speedtest Lite, v1.2. Identical 5dB omni "rubber duck" antenna swapped between adapters.

Engenius throughput without client program installed: 3-18 mb/s
Engenius throughput with client installed: 35-45 mb/s
Alfa throughput with or without client: 5-20 mb/s, frequently slower than “g” speeds.

The Alfa client app appears to be a simple branded copy of the Realtek app. It does not recognize the Engenius adapter. Since Alfa uses the higher end chip, the implication is that the Engenius client program loads something into the firmware that makes a positive difference.

Cons: The Alfa/Realtek and Engenius client apps conflict, and cannot be simultaneously installed. The drivers do not conflict, but as previously noted, the Engenius client seems to provide a beneficial code tweak. The install packages do not offer to install the drivers without the clients. To run both adapters on one machine, first install the entire Engenius package. Then run the Alfa install, use “system restore” to remove it, then manually install the Alfa driver left over by the Alfa install program in the folder “036NHR_WindowsDriver_0104”.

Other Thoughts: The Alfa/Realtek and Engenius clients conflict, and cannot be simultaneously installed. The drivers do not conflict, but as previously noted, the Engenius client seems to provide a beneficial code tweak. The install packages do not offer to install the drivers without the clients. To run both adapters on one machine, first install the entire Engenius package. Caveats: The Asus RT-AC66U new, with frequent firmware revisions. Your results may be significantly different.
