1 out of 5 eggsjunk

Pros: none

Cons: connects automatically no matter what the settings are, makes connections WORSE. junk

Other Thoughts: Total waste of money. Connecting Wi-Fi through internal laptop is stronger and faster than this CONtraption. Using this junk makes signal and speed WORSE. Tried various settings, still JUNK.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for Most Folks

Pros: Good price for a rather large coverage range and suprisingly it has been wonderful in just about every instance. I would really recommend this to anyone however if you read my cons below and if it doesn't match your current internet bandwidth, then by all means GET THIS!!!

Cons: The only gripe I have over this is that if I try to download with a bandwidth of 6MB or more, it stops working, or rather it stops sending/receiving data. It still shows that there is a connection however nothing goes in or out. I simply just have to disable(2 seconds) then enable(2 seconds) and I'm back!! However that is pitiful.

I found this out when I was Reinstalling World of Warcraft, 20GB download. I have Comcast Extreme 105 and when I'm wired in I get a down of 12-13MBps, however with this thing, as soon as I go over 5.8MB and stay in the 6+ zone for more than 10-15 seconds, it dies.

Sure I could always make a new SSID on my router and limit the band on it but that's pointless and stupid if you're going to pay $200 for the internet but can't make full use of it.

The wow install is threaded p2p download, but that has nothing to do with it, because I run a minecraft server and from time to time I have to back it up or download a backup from the cloud and its a single thread download and I still lose my connection.

Other than this one thing, It's a wonderful wonderful adapter.

Other Thoughts: I went through two of them and both of them died at the same area of my bandwidth. At the moment I'm just running an extender and a ethernet cord which works but is a bit of extra clutter I could do without.

4 out of 5 eggsComparison with Alfa AWUS036NHR

Pros: The 9603H uses the Realtek 8188S(U?) chip; Alfa uses the 8188RU high power chip. Both client apps are based on a Realtek code base. The Engenius registers as an Engenius device; the Alfa as a Realtek device. Comparisons were made with an Asus RT-AC66U AP/router, firmware 3.0.0.4.246 (latest). Signal was through two floors, near or at “100%”, link speed reported 72mb/s with both adapters without channel bonding. Throughput measured with LAN Speedtest Lite, v1.2. Identical 5dB omni "rubber duck" antenna swapped between adapters.

Engenius throughput without client program installed: 3-18 mb/s
Engenius throughput with client installed: 35-45 mb/s
Alfa throughput with or without client: 5-20 mb/s, frequently slower than “g” speeds.

The Alfa client app appears to be a simple branded copy of the Realtek app. It does not recognize the Engenius adapter. Since Alfa uses the higher end chip, the implication is that the Engenius client program loads something into the firmware that makes a positive difference.

Cons: The Alfa/Realtek and Engenius client apps conflict, and cannot be simultaneously installed. The drivers do not conflict, but as previously noted, the Engenius client seems to provide a beneficial code tweak. The install packages do not offer to install the drivers without the clients. To run both adapters on one machine, first install the entire Engenius package. Then run the Alfa install, use “system restore” to remove it, then manually install the Alfa driver left over by the Alfa install program in the folder “036NHR_WindowsDriver_0104”.

Other Thoughts: The Alfa/Realtek and Engenius clients conflict, and cannot be simultaneously installed.

Caveats: The Asus RT-AC66U new, with frequent firmware revisions. Your results may be significantly different.

5 out of 5 eggsDependable

Pros: We installed this last spring on a PC on our factory floor. The PC is in a steel mobile cart. The cable was long enough to put the antenna outside the cart.

Signal strength has been solid. This has worked flawlessly. We used to use Cisco Wireless PCI adapters, but they weren't compatible with Windows 7. This adapter was.

I bought a second one today for a computer we are upgrading.

Cons: none

2 out of 5 eggs2 Eggs becuase I am in a good mood.

Pros: Tripled the networks you can view and gives you the false sense of strong connection.

Cons: This adapter has serious issues with connecting to G routers. It connects and shows 5 bars, even pings well, however when downloading anything the download rate keep fluctuating.

I am on DSL so my max download rate is 300 kbs. Using this adapter my download speeds would go from 300 kbs to 0 and back up constantly. It stayed more on the low end than high end.

I figured maybe it could have just been a connection issue, so I tried many different internets, many different routers, on many different days, in many different locations the issue persisted. It is great for seeing networks and pretending that you have 5 bars. I put this baby in and I tripled the networks I could see and put the network I use to 5 bars from 2-3 but that is where it stops.

Other Thoughts: If you are looking to get an network adapter for super long ranges (300+ feet) then I would recommend the Alfa AWUS036H 1000mW 802.11b/g USB Wireless WiFi network Adapter. They also have N adapters which I do believe AWUS036NHR 2000mW is the best one for N which also does G. When I put this in I had basically the same amount of networks show up as I did with the enGenius but the connection was super solid. It never drops signal, never skips a beat. When I ping the router or google it is constant, and when I download it maxes out my bandwidth until the download is complete.

Unfortunately Newegg doesn't stock these adapters for whatever reason. I did research on this and these adapters are known to be the best long range adapters in the industry for under 100 dollars. I have had the G version now for a few months and I would have easily paid double for this baby. They cost around 30 and about the same as this enGenius for the N version.

Newegg you must stock these!!!

4 out of 5 eggsworks with windows 7 64 bit

Pros: big plus: software and hardware both install and work on windows 7 64 bit....most adaptor's don't work on win7 64.....if you download this driver u get a bit better gain....realtek RTL8191SU driver. not listed on engenius site. this driver kills engenius's software tho.

Cons: cable to short....needs to be 3 or 4 foot long. or 1 short cable for lap and long 1 for desk. duel usb plugs.. they claim the output is 2000mw max.... ah, don't think so. also they don't tell u how to get that much power.

3 out of 5 eggsEngenius 600mw

Pros: REPOSTING to a review I just left recently. This was the most awesome adapter i have ever used as far as strength goes. it pulled in 5 bars from afar where other adapters would only get 1 or 0 bars. Due to the 600mw amplifier inside this thing i am sure of.

Cons: Only lasted 2 weeks with solid connection....the the problems began... I could see access points that still show 5 bars but when you try to connect windows says "Cannot connect to any available wireless networks, perhaps you are too far away" or something to that effect. I say "too far away???... with 5 bars of reception???"

Other Thoughts: I tried this on 3 different PC's and played with channel settings on router, and uninstalled and re-installed engenius's software for the sake of saying I tried that too. Then after resorting to an older adapter with less signal strength the problem was resolved, seemed to narrow it down to this part. Stuff like this happens i guess. It was the best i have ever used while it worked.
