EAP300 offers a "smoke detector" look, and is a high-powered (up to 29dBm) wireless-n access point / WDS Bridge / WDS AP that operates seamlessly in the 2.4GHz frequency spectrum supporting 802.11 b/g/n standard high speed feature. It is the best way to add long range wireless capability to your existing wired network or to add bandwidth to your wireless installation.

EAP300 features high wireless output power and receive sensitivity along with antenna diversity. High output power and high sensitivity extend wireless coverage to reduce the roaming between access points and to provide a reliable wireless connection. It also reduces the total cost of ownership on hardware.

To protect your wireless connectivity, it can encrypt all wireless transmissions through 64/128bits WEP data encryption and also supports WPA/WPA2. The MAC address filtering lets you select exactly which stations should have access to your network. In addition, the user isolation function can protect the private network between client users. The attractive design, high performance and array of features make the EAP300 a suitable wireless solution for your residence or office.

  • newegg HIGH-POWER, LONG-RANGE WI-FI Up to 29dBm RF Tx power provides greater Wi-Fi coverage over mainstream competitors.
  • newegg WIRELESS-N 6X SPEED OVER 802.11G NETWORKS The EAP300 delivers up to 6x faster speed than 802.11g, providing maximum date rate up to 300Mbps with 802.11N MIMO Technology.
  • newegg AESTHETIC DESIGN “Smoke Detector” Design – Unobtrusive design supports easy mountable to wall and ceiling (accessories included).
  • newegg Multiple BSSID & SSID TO VLAN MAPPING The EAP300 supports up to 4 BSSIDs with blocking SSID broadcast and wireless encryption 64/128-bit WEP, WPA/WPA2. Plus, it supports 802.1q mapping of SSIDs up to 4 VLANs.
  • newegg 802.3af PoE Compatible The EAP300 supports Power over Ethernet (IEEE 802.3af) and allows deployment in areas where power outlets are not available.
  • newegg INTEGRATED ANTENNA The EAP300 includes an internal 5dBi antenna with optimized configuration and RF performance.

4 out of 5 eggsNot the best, not the worst.

Pros: - Smoke detector-like style is definitely appropriate for a business setting.
- Impressive set of features, which is expected if this device is to be the wireless backbone of a populated network. WDS mode, client mode, AP mode.
- PoE compliant.
- Ethernet port is expected but beneficial if you wanted to link up a switch if need be or use the PoE.
- Can disable ALL LEDs. Otherwise this unit is a bright blue color. Disabling all the LEDs makes it so there are not lights at all.. you cannot even tell if the unit is on or not.
- Intuitive interface that is mostly simple to use with one exception mentioned in OTs.
- Unboxing the unit included the basic necessities including mounting screws to secure the two-piece bracket so you can easily remove and replace the device.

Cons: I would definitely expect there to be gigabit ethernet port (at least.) This isn’t really a con in smaller networks. But I imagine that these devices on larger networks, being N300 devices, could experience some overhead if there is a larger user base or heavy bandwidth consumption. A gigabit copper backbone would avoid saturation. A 300Mbps signal halved and slowed by numerous WDS hops (and signal noise in between, packet error correction, etc.) can drop from that theoretical top speed to 2 or 1Mbps easily.

Also it was a bit buggy with working together on my network. Everything connected well with wireless security disabled but for some reason it would not connect for WPA or WPA2.

Other Thoughts: Tip: If you’re one to skip reading the manual then you’ll probably want to know that you have to manually enter a static IP address when setting the device up. In fact, the pdf of the manual is included on a disk. You should probably at least skim the contents…because DHCP is disabled by default and you should know that no changes take effect when you click to submit them. You also have to click “Save/Reload:#” in the top left of the navigation pane. If you do not, then it will read like your changes saved but they will not apply.

Being assigned only one unit, it’s a bit tough to test this out in a practical scenario, but overall this about as well as expected. On the software side, any tech admin or competent techie can set up an efficient, controlled EAP/WDS wifi network. I did not test EAP on this device but I tested WDS and Repeater modes. I wasn’t actually able to get it to work with any encryption. It’s likely an error on my part somewhere, I’m sure.

There is a command Line interface but it is VERY limited. Logs show it running Busybox 1.19.4 but when you connect via Telnet it never gives you shell access. It’s not a pro to have a CLI if you can’t create and run custom scripts or actually do something you can’t easily do on the web interface..

Over all this seems like a decent solution for a smaller network. It seems a little buggy in my testing but I also am using equipment different than Engenius’ brand (DD-WRT devices.) I'm not sure that I would value these at the current $100 price tag, however. I would recommend someone to explore other options in this range..

4 out of 5 eggsGood for the money

Pros: The EAP300 is a good wireless access point for the price. It is simple to program and I have coverage a quarter mile radius from the access point. I have 2 of these in operation. One is a V1 and the other is a V2, If you are using more than one, make sure that you set the wireless channels away from one another.

Cons: I ordered my two at the same time on the same order. I received a V1 and a V2 of the hardware. The programming is a bit different on the different HW versions. The V2 keeps losing the WPA2 password in programming.

Other Thoughts: Two of the same HW version would have been preferred, but It was easy to figure out the differences in the programming.

2 out of 5 eggsThe good the bad and the ugly

Pros: - Definitely high power; our warehouse units reach as far 150 ft away through concrete walls. We've had to turn the power down on some units close to walls with adjoining tenants because of complaints our wireless network was overpowering theirs.

- Works in a pseudo-mesh arrangement with multiple WAPs for large area coverage.

- Easy to install on ceilings and walls (very unobtrusive).

- PoE works great with our lower end PoE switches (TrendNet, Netgear).

- Inexpensive for a business class router (you can get these for as low as $90/ea on sale or in bulk).

Cons: - Poor quality/longevity. We've experienced over 25% failure rate between 6 & 18 months. The ones under 12 months are covered by warranty but it's still annoying as many of these units are on 24' warehouse ceilings.

- The units sometimes "freeze" requiring a power cycle.

- Poor customer service. In all fairness I occasionally get a decent rep but most times I get a person that struggles with English and worse tries to feed me explanations I know are blatantly untrue.

- Apple devices don't seem to play well with these WAPs (or any of the other Engenius units I've tried). Often the Apple device will stop passing data even though it says connected and you have to disconnect/reconnect or in extreme cases restart the device. These same Apple products work flawlessly with Linksys and Ruckus WAPs so I have a hard time believing the problem is solely with the Apple hardware. Engenius reps I've talked to claim to not know about this problem or be able to reproduce it.

Other Thoughts: Over the last few years I have purchased about 60 of the Engenius PoE smoke detector style units for work and a couple other models for home (most recently the ESR750H). With the high failure rate we're no longer buying Engenius and instead are replacing them as they die with business WAPs from Ruckus (so far 0 failures and much more sophisticated but they're also more $$$).

On the home front, the ESR750H has been a huge disappointment. The 5GHz band is too unreliable to use (I have no idea if it's environmental, half-baked hardware, or what), the admin interface has timeout issues (an Engenius rep tried to convince me this was by design, as if), and the Apple connection issues are frustrating.

Your mileage may very but I'd be careful before buying Engenius products in general.

2 out of 5 eggsSubstandard PoE WAP

Pros: PoE

Cons: Wireless issues going across a 9' room! Streaming media (usually radio) would skip and cut out regularly.

Other Thoughts: Thought my ASA was doing something weird to streaming media at first but then I dusted off my old DIR-655 and set it up as a WAP. Wireless has been perfect since.

2 out of 5 eggsConflicts with existing Engenius AP

Pros: Visually invisible because it looks like a smoke detector. The User interface is easy to understand.

Cons: Will not work well with another Engenius AP. I bought it to replace a linksys for aesthetic reasons. The wireless freezes if I have both Engenius on at the same time even with different channels, ssid's and of course I have different IP's.
No problem setting up with a netgear, Linksys and Engenious combo. Just 2 enGeniuss on the same network.

Other Thoughts: I tried upgrading the firmware but it did not improve things. I've spent hours trying to make it work but...

2 out of 5 eggsWas ok...for a while

Pros: Nice features, good price.

Cons: I've had this about ten months now. I'm starting to have to restart it more and more the older it gets.

Other Thoughts: Wish I could find a reasonably priced WAP that would last longer than a year.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Range and Performance

Pros: I purchased an EAP300 to replace a cheaper Cisco WAP that kept failing. The EAP300 has given me many months of flawless, administration-free service. It also has excellent range without having big, ugly antennas sticking out of it. (*Note: Primarily Windows and Android-based environment)

Cons: None
