3 out of 5 eggsSeemed promising, but lately troubling

Pros: Good price for a business-class device, strong range, good speeds when working properly

Cons: After a few months of mostly trouble-free use, these things began giving us headaches that seem to be worsening as time goes by. During periods of high demand, they will often slow down or grind entirely to a halt (web and telnet interfaces continue working but they stop passing traffic to clients) and require a reboot. Firmware updates have not fixed the issue, which seems to be hardware-related.

Other Thoughts: We are using four of these in our public facility, positioned to cover the areas where people most often need wireless access. Unfortunately, once there are more than a handful of people actively using a given AP, it ends up bogging down or stalling entirely. This issue seems to depend on how much traffic each person is using; I've seen these things continue working normally with as many as 15 clients, and conversely I've seen them act up with only 5 or 6 people connected.

Because of the way our building is laid out, I can't see any way to alleviate this problem aside from replacing our EAP350s with more robust devices. Disappointing, but maybe we were just expecting too much from these relatively cheap devices.

5 out of 5 eggsProfessional Grade

Pros: Professional access point, not for beginners using wizard installers. It took me 15 minutes to get it up and running, and probably an hour to set it up the way I wanted. Great Job with this unit. Love the feature set. Zero downtime, best signal range i've ever had so far.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Do the firmware update right away like reviewers say. Just do it right away before anything else. Its easy.

2 out of 5 eggsDon't buy if you need more than one

Pros: 1. Good range
2. multiple vlan support

Cons: 1. No roaming capability whatsoever (Support verified that no roaming capabilities are built in to these units)
2. Engenius support is aweful (not just because they aren't U.S. based)
3. To get these to be stable, you must flash them to the latest firmware, change a few settings, then reset to factory defaults before applying your actual configuration. Not sure why.

Other Thoughts: I purchased 10 of these units to attempt to cheap out on a wireless deployment. While the units do have a pretty decent range on them, setting them up in a standard multicell configuration (neighboring APs on different channels using channels 1, 6, 11) yeilded aweful results in regards to roaming between the units. Calling Engenius support got me no where (they didnt have a clue what I was talking about) except being told the units don't support roaming.

If you are planning on purchasing one of these for use as the sole AP in a home, go for it, however if you are thinking you can deploy these in a multicell setup, save your time and $ and look else where. I'm not sure why they advertise these as being made for hospitals if they arent compliant with roaming standards in 802.11 specs - I've never seen a hospital that only needs one AP.

4 out of 5 eggsReliable, Low-Maintenance

Pros: Set-it and forget-it; no problems, zero dropouts (so far).

Cons: A little weird to install.

Other Thoughts: I used three of these to provide wireless connectivity in 40,000 sqft warehouse. Once wired and setup, I haven't had any problems -- the warehouse operates smoothly without any dropouts.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Perfectly

Pros: Works perfectly. The range is outstanding. Very easy to setup and works great with all the other access points we have at the facility. Will probably be replacing all the other access points with these due to the professional look and the low likelihood of them receiving user damage since they can be securely wall-mounted

Cons: Signal drop-off was a bit more than I expected throughout the building. That being said, it is probably just the architecture of the building because the signal that reaches outside is outstanding.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: Looks great, very easy to install. The configuartion utility is one of the cleanest I have ever seen. Great coverage when configured properly,

Cons: Non that I have seen.

Other Thoughts: I decided to wall mount this as I didn't want to run new cable through my ceiling. The unit is located on the first floor of a 2700+ sqft 2 story house. It works great in this configuration and I have great signal strength on both floors.

2 out of 5 eggsStalls every few minues

Pros: Was easy to set up, has great signal strength, worked great at first.

Cons: Now the router just stalls all traffic for a few seconds every 10-30 minutes. This makes playing games wirelessly online really annoying.

Tried having the device reboot itself every day, but it does not help. Would not purchase again.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect AP for a small business

Pros: This is the perfect device for a small business wireless network. Signal strength is great, it's solid as a rock, I've put about 10 of these in for various clients so far and everyone's been happy with them. The PoE and 802.1q VLAN tagging works as advertised when used with a proper managed switch (e.g. for example, the Cisco SG200-08P)

Also, these work perfect for having multiple APs on a single network, all configured with the same SSID and security settings. I can put three or four of these into a client's house and walk around and roam seamlessly from one AP to another.

Cons: On my laptop, copying files from my server to my laptop ran at about 5-6 MB/s. Not the greatest speed there, but the connection was consistent and solid.

Other Thoughts: Smoke detector design is cute, but beware these are a fair bit "deeper" than your average smoke detector. You can turn off the LEDs, which is a nice touch.

The AP only allows 25 clients to connect simultaneously PER access point. This is by design. This is not a con - NO CHEAP CONSUMER ACCESS POINT will work with 25+ clients, it's just the Engenius actually puts a hard limit on it so you don't get carried away like the guy a few comments down who thought this would happily carry 1000+ people at his trade show. Ridiculous.

5 out of 5 eggs2 month in and doing what it should

Pros: Strong signal. Not a single hiccup in 2 months. Despite what other have said, I like the no non-sense interface.

Cons: not really a con, but you have to remember that as you change things in the interface, you have to commit them...not a big deal. Just something to get used to. I think I actually like this better than immediate changes - helps with the "shoot - didn't mean to do that" issues I sometimes have.

Other Thoughts: I took a really long time deciding on what to replace my old WAP54g. It served me well for years and finally started needing to be rebooted every month or so. A replacement was in order and first tried an ECB9500 and was not impressed. But, wasn't ready to call it quits on EnGenius...and I'm glad I didn't. This is a home application where we have a couple smartphones, a tablet and a wireless wdtv. I like how much faster our phones establish a connection and certainly the distance is a plus - even though the WAP54G was pretty good...this is definitely better. Streaming Netflix to the wdtv via wireless isn't much different than wired for me.

I had plans to use the PoE and run it up to the main level, but I actually have it laying on it's back pointing up from the basement (about 5 feet above the concrete floor) and it easily covers the basement and the other two floors above. And it works further out in my yard than my previous wap.

Was just about to pick up one of these for a client and realized I hadn't shared my thoughts from the original purchase. Now I have.
