3 out of 5 eggsWork great in a "safe" environment

Pros: >Can handle pretty impressive distances (I was able to link up from 2 miles through dense pine trees)
>Delivers an effective invisible wireless link to connect buildings

Cons: These units simply can't handle the elements. I've lost 4 of them in the past 9 months. Even a relatively nearby electrical storm seems to be enough to destroy the PoE injectors, AC adapters, or the ENH units themselves. Even when properly grounded using the grounding stud on the PoE injector and plugged into an APC UPS, they don't hold up.

In fairness, I was asking these units to function under very undesirable conditions. They were all located at a ski resort on the side of a mountain above 10,000' elevation, often exposed to high winds and sub-zero temperatures. Nevertheless, I would have expected an outdoor unit to be better equipped to handle transient voltages and relatively nearby lightning strikes.

Other Thoughts: If you can place these in ideal conditions where they are not exposed to harsh elements, they are probably suitable. Though beware of the slightest voltage variations and nearby electrical storms.

I have opted to move to Ubiquiti units for my purposes, as they seem to be better built for the elements. Time will tell.

5 out of 5 eggsLove it

Pros: Turn it on and forget it! Runs forever and you don't have to worry about it.
High-power, has been running our outdoor wifi securiy cameras for a very long time with no issues.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Wish they made a version that would run off a 12V POE, then I would use one in my RV also!

3 out of 5 eggsIt's alright

Pros: Long range
Cheap
Decent features
Great Outdoors

Cons: Not great stability

Other Thoughts: It works great when it works, but it needs rebooting quite often. These have an auto-reboot feature for a reason, we have ours set to reboot everyday or throughput drops to practically nothing after an unspecified amount of time. Leaving ours running for over a week is really pushing them, then the complaints start rolling in.

Auto reboot is kind of lame because you can't pick the time that they reboot. It's from the time you press the apply button.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect Device For My Needs

Pros: I have used a lot of these devices in an array of various scenarios. To summarize these up, they are perfect for expanding a WDS network.

Have purchased over 100 of these, and other similar radios (EOC1650) and they all work great. Every once in awhile one of these radios will have a panic attack or something, and freeze, lose its connection to the wifi cloud, or other weird issues. Simply resetting the device, and restoring the appropriate restore file to the radio brings is back online.

Cons: Way too much packaging.

I use these radios all the time, and the leftover packaging is a job in itself to regulate. For example, the radio comes with a nice hose clamp that is well constructed. This clamp is inside a zip lock style bag, in the retail box. The PoE injector is inside a sealed plastic bag, which is inside a fitted card stock box, which is located in a cardboard holder thing, that is inside of the retail cardboard box. The AC adapter is inside a card stock box, inside a cardboard mold, inside of the retail cardboard box.

There are two zip lock style bags that contain worthless drywall mounts with plastic inserts that you shove into a drywall, wall, and screw the screws into them, to provide mounting points for the radio to hang from. I highly not recommend mounting this onto a drywall, wall. Even when installed correctly several times, I have had many radios fall out of the walls over time. The failure of the mounting system is the plastic things you shove into the wall, they just fall out of the wall over time, due to vibrations, or gravity, or whatever else. Point being, don't use the drywall mounting screws. Kinda strange that every radio I have purchased has had 2 bags of worthless mounting hardware. The provided CD is something I do not use, and can argue that is unnecessary to include in the packaging. The documentation of the radios, as far as configuration can be improved.

I am giving this product a 5 egg rating because it works really well, and does everything it claims it can do once you figure out how to configure it, and understand what it can and cannot do. However, I do have a personal issue with the amount of packaging. I understand that I have been purchasing retail packages, and understandably making sure that a customer gets everything needed to use these is a goal of engenius. I am VERY interested in purchasing OEM style ENH202 radios with minimal hardware. There are many applications where I would have much rather used a PoE rack mount switch to power the radios over all the single PoE injectors included in the retail version.

I want to see a package where you sell say, 12 ENH202 radios, with a PoE switch and nothing else. I can get the hose clamps, and other mounting hardware myself.

Other Thoughts: One of these radios can be used as the router of your network, but is not recommended, as the 10/100 NIC cuts the 300mb throughput of your wireless network by 2/3's. I strongly recommend using these radios only as WDS stations to extend a wireless N WDS network.

If you have the same need I do with maintaining full wireless throughout into your wired gigabit network, use the ENH210EXT (has gigabit nics) as the main WDS AP and use the ENH202 radios to extend the signal. This approach gives your wired gigabit network resources like network drives etc full throughput of the wireless network while accessing them through anywhere on the wifi.

I have a gigabit wired NAS box on the wired side of the network, and can access it with full wireless throughput anywhere in the wifi cloud.

Highly recommend saving a restore file of each device, and name them accordingly. Only restore a restore file to the exact radio you saved if from. Example, I have a network with a dozen radios on it. Most are ENH202 radios. I have a flash drive with a folder in it that stores a config file for each and every radio of the network. If a radio ever needs to be reset, or dies, I can simply replace/reset, and restore that radio with it's exact needed file, seamlessly reintegrating the down radio back into the layer 2 wifi cloud.

I would like to see a package where you sell say, 12 ENH202 radios, with a PoE switch, or a package similar. I can get the hose clamps, and other mounting hardware elsewhere.

4 out of 5 eggsMore work than you think

Pros: It is a little stronger than the eoc2611p ap I had before.

Cons: No support by the company except during the week. Also you must change settings in you client bridge if it happens to be a different modle say eoc2611p client. Took me 8 hours to figure out that wds client in the client bridge has to be disabled. Where when I had two eoc2611ps setup it is recommended to be enabled. it was connected the whole time but you could not ping or log in to enh202 or dsl router soon as I disable wds bang it went.

2 out of 5 eggsBeware, product is NOT 802.3af PoE Compliant

Pros: I was not able to actually use the unit. Bricked.

Cons: False advertising on NewEgg.com

Other Thoughts: Bricked this unit hooking it up to a 802.3af PoE Compliant switch. Contacted EnGenius and they said the product is only designed to work with their included propitiatory PoE injector and if hooked up to a standard 802.3af PoE Compliant switch, it would brick the unit.

NewEgg product page indicates the product is 802.3af PoE Compliant, this is false.

NewEgg refused to accept a return of the product because I was outside their return window when I finally needed this unit in the field.

1 out of 5 eggsBe VERY CAREFUL

Pros: Cheap
When they work - they work great

Cons: Engenius Customer Service is HORRIBLE!!!! Sent unit in for repair and got ZERO feedback. I had to call twice to see if they were actually doing anything with the repair. SEVEN Weeks later a replacement is supposedly on it's way. There is no doubt that they will take your money but if the unit is defective it really seems like a chore for them to assist you with their defective equipment. Check their RMA policy before you buy...and if you have clients that need immediate turn around on their repair just plan on having a brand new spare unit in stock because my head would explode if I was a customer that had to wait almost two months for a repair of a $75 bridge unit!!!!! Get what you pay for I guess - at least relative to customer service. I will definitely be looking for alternatives when I purchase anything like this in the future.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsbetter than eoc2611p

Pros: i use it in client bridge mode.. they fixed the save and apply hassle making the earlier mods confusing. added a reboot to factory settings on the power injector...big help, so you do not have to get it down when your configuration fails. just push button on side of 24volt supply for 10 sec.

Cons: configuration guide still has to be read carefully.

Other Thoughts: you better understand DHCP and IP address assignment
