3 out of 5 eggsFollow up to previous review

Pros: same as before, see other thoughts.

Cons: same as before, see other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: I am writing this review to respond to the manufacturer who responded to me. (Newegg really should have a option to respond back to the manufacturers publicly so people don't have to make multiple reviews.)

There is only one other wireless I can see from our house and so I originally set the AP to automatically choose the best channel. Please don't tell me that this AP is unable to do that when there is only one other channel in use.
The wireless security is set to WPA2-PSK(AES).
When I originally set this AP up, I set the output power to the max. My old AP made it to our garage, this one does not.
And as for the username and password on the user interface, they are 5 and 8 characters long respectively. Well below what you say is the max of 10 and 12.
Question, if there is a limit on the number of characters, why would anyone be able to enter more?

I still haven't reset it because I am to frustrated that I even have to do so, so I haven't tested any changes yet. I'm just going on what I remember from when I set it up.
If I remember wrong, I guess we will never know because I have to reset it to find out. It still allows access to the internet, so I guess that's a plus.

3 out of 5 eggsNot as good as I expected

Pros: Good range
PoE
Lots of options
Good web interface

Cons: Was restarting when I got it. (See other thoughts)
Not great range, has about the same coverage as my old $50 AP it replaced.
My older smart phone doesn't automatically connect. I have to view available wireless networks and then it connects. My old ap never had this problem.
It just forgot the password I had set to log into the web interface!!!! (See other thoughts)

Other Thoughts: I got this AP to replace my 5 year old AP that was constantly restarting.
When I got this new AP set up, it was randomly restarting, so I took it off the wall, unpluged it, and looked at it... put it back and it hasn't restarted since. I assume it didn't have a full connection to the ethernet and wasn't getting consistent power.

NOW today,5 months later, I was trying to transfer some files over my wireless and it was going at a pathetic 2.0 MBps. (this is a wireless N AP right?) So I wanted to log into the AP to see if my devices were connected at the proper speeds. BUT when I went to my AP's ip and clicked log in to the web interface with my saved credentials, it says my password is incorrect!! So I entered the password I used, and it still says its incorrect!!
What gives? Apparently it forgets the web interface login password. Now I will have to reset the stupid thing so I can log into it again.
And that is why I went through the trouble of posting this review today. And all that is why I give it 3 eggs.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We are sorry to hear about your experience.

Slow wireless connectivity can be caused by various factors. Perhaps changing some settings might help your connection. Please scan the area for other wireless signals and change the wireless channel that is set on the EAP350 to a channel with less congestion. If the range is not enough you can increase the transmit power of the access point from a default of 20dBm up to 28dBm although usually setting it to 20-23dBm is more than enough for most users. We also recommend that you set the wireless security to WPA2-PSK(AES) and to update the firmware if necessary.

The issue that you have encountered about accessing the user interface could be because your password has more than 12 characters. For the EAP350 the username should not be more than 10 characters long and the password up to 12 characters only. This is true for most EnGenius devices.

If you have any questions regarding Engenius and our products you may reach us through our number at 1-888-735-7888 (Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 4:00pm PDT) or e-mail us at support@engeniustech.com (Saturday, Sunday 8am - 4pm PDT). Our support team would be glad to be of service to you.

Thank you for your patience and we look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Engenius Customer Support Team

3 out of 5 eggsWell, one of mine just started failing

Pros: I've installed about 10 of these so far in various client sites. The devices have good range (when installed correctly, ceiling or wall mounted). It supports PoE, 802.11q VLAN tagging, multiple SSIDs, and it supposed installing several of them in the same area with the same SSID and laptops seamlessly roam from one to the other.

Overall, this is my "go-to" access point for small business installations with <20 devices. They have always been very reliable

Cons: ... until now. The first one I bought about 2.5 years ago has now started flaking out. The device boots and appears to work, but wifi connections just drop and fail, high pingtimes, and generally data just doesn't seem to go through. I did all the regular troubleshooting, it's the Engenius device itself causing the issue.

Replaced it with another identically configured EAP350 and everything's working fine again. So it was definitely this particular device that was defective.

That seriously makes me reconsider installing these in the future. I'm imagining a client who has 3x of these installed on premises and one of them is flaking out... they'll have nonstop intermittent and impossible to diagnose WiFi issues for YEARS before they figure it out.

Also... this thing is running on 802.11 draft N. It doesn't have dual radios and it doesn't do 5.4ghz. With 802.11ac coming out this thing is starting to feel pretty old.

Other Thoughts: Engenius's warranty policy is awful. It's a 1 year warranty (so mine is out of warranty anyways), but their RMA policy consists of a manual form you fill out and fax in. There is no automated serial number checking, and they require the actual original receipt of purchase. Don't have it? Tough luck. You also have to agree to pay $55 + return shipping if they "can't find any fault with the device". And you have to give them a credit card number when you submit the RMA!

So... that means intermittent issues like mine could very well turn into wasting $55 + shipping BOTH directions if Engenius's RMA dept is incompetent and fails to find the issue I'm experiencing.

No thanks, i'd rather just buy something else from now on.

2 out of 5 eggsInterment issues and then the unit died

Pros: Good interface and lots of features on this unit. The unit worked well for about 3 months.

Cons: Devices started being unable to connect to the unit and I ended up rebooting twice a day. The unit has now died, so I now need find a replacement.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Micahel,

We appreciate your time in posting your comments and feedback. We are sorry to hear about your experience.

Rest assured that all EnGenius devices have a 1 year limited warranty starting from the date of purchase from an authorized reseller. Since your EAP350 is still within the 1 year warranty period please call our customer support team to RMA your access point. Our RMA department will need a copy of the proof of purchase and the serial number of your EAP350.

Thank you for your patience and we apologize for the inconvenience.

Sincerely,

Engenius Customer Support Team

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little access point packs a punch

Pros: One of the best GUIs I've ever worked with. User friendly yet provides access to all of the necessary settings you needed for a WAP.
Ships with it's own POE injector, which easily would run $30-50 with other brands.
Nice connected clients list that also shows the dBm connected. Helped me in planning the "right spot" to mount it for good coverage.
Can change between Access point and repeater mode.
Was able to setup in under 5 minutes. Plus I really like the fact that I can configure all of the settings I want then use the "Save/Reload" option in the top of the settings tree to apply at once.

Cons: Only has 2.4 GHz mode. May not be a drawback to some, but if you use in B/G/N mode you'll only be able to use the 20MHz channel. This limits you to 130Mbps max on speed.
Since i have a separate network for wireless G devices, I was able to use this device in wireless N mode solely and flip it over to 40MHz to get 300Mbps thruput.

5 out of 5 eggsReally Nice WAP

Pros: Works extremely well, I've been installing these throughout our school to rave reviews from users. Our building is three story, expansive, old (solid) construction, and the signal from these is just great. Whereas with other WAPs I need to mount inside each room, these guys go in the hallways and penetrate remarkably well.

Cons: Just waiting for Trendnet to produce a gigabit/fiber switch so I can drop all of the injectors.

Other Thoughts: Trendnet consistently produces nice product for frugal users. I can claim my knowledge to be "somewhat high" having set up about a dozen of these and really played with the config settings to get the most of out them.

1 out of 5 eggsEasy to setup, but doesn't work!

Pros: Easy setup. Feature list is adequate. Appears to be a good performing AP on paper.

Cons: it will not hold an IP, even after a reservation. I'm not quite sure what is happening there. I have many other reservations on my Cisco small business router.

The EAP350 kit just flat out does not deliver a solid signal. Associated clients are connected, but have such poor throughput that I had to shut this device down and go back to my old AP. Pings to the EAP350 from a wireless client drop packets, and have horrible ping times when it does respond (>200ms). Dropped responses can take 30 seconds before being picked up again. Wired clients can ping the device just fine; the device can ping other wiredd devices just fine. I'm certain the problem lies in the antenna portion.

I have reset the device many times. I have tried using default settings for everything I can outside of configuring the SSID. Nothing I do can get this device to work properly. Very disappointed.

I will be sending this back in for a replacement, hopefully the next one will work as advertised.

Other Thoughts: Be wary.

Manufacturer Response:

3 out of 5 eggsWorks good...mostly

Pros: Easy to set up, great range.

Cons: Loses internet connection and must be powered off and back on to reestablish the connection.

Other Thoughts: Other people have reported the same issue on various internet forums. The client computer will still be connected to the EAP350, they just won't be able to see any other network resources or connect to the internet. The client shows a strong signal from the EAP, and the EAP shows a strong signal from the client. The connections drop randomly, and not all clients drop at the same time. If I wait a while, it usually reconnects to everything, but the only way to clear it quickly is to power down the device and let the client reconnect.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent WAP

Pros: Very easy to setup and impressive unit mounted to the ceiling. Its not noticeable at first because it looks like a smoke detector, however, has bright blue indicator lights showing its status with the network. User interface through a web browser is easy to navigate and has a ton of features. Its high performance covers a large area of the office.

Cons: None
