5 out of 5 eggsEAP600 is beast

Pros: Strength and quality of signal is great in my 1700sqft home
Have Comcast 25Mbps pipe, able to get 25-27Mbps on internet speed tests over the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz channels
Easy to navigate interface
Lots of options, maybe too many for the average user but I love the ability to customize
LED Control (turn any or all of the LEDs on or off)
PoE - This is the best feature because this access point was meant to be ceiling mounted. I ran some Cat5e through my ceiling and mounted this using a PoE adapter to provide power
Great design, looks like a big smoke detector
Firmware updates easily access from EnGenius website

Cons: Does not come with a PoE injector but I knew that going in. Still would have been nice to have one bundled with it. Without a PoE injector it is very difficult to use this access point as a ceiling mount which is what it is designed for. (unless a lot of people have power outlets on their ceilings.)

Other Thoughts: Overall I would definitely buy this access point again and recommend it to anyone look for good speed and signal quality. I would be very interested to see how two or more of these would operate together but my house is not big enough to warrant that. Looking at the web interface and on EnGenius' website, it sounds like a few of these would be great for a bigger home.

3 out of 5 eggsmulti-SSID with VLAN tagging does not work

Pros: Reasonable cost, dual band support, very pleasing appearance, easy POE installation.

Cons: These units are NOT enterprise ready, at least if you need to use multi-SSIDs with VLAN tagging. This function is just broken. Please see the enGenius forums www.engeniusforum.com, topic EAP600 Problems for additional details.
Note that this has been broken in all firmware releases up to and including 1.5.2. Note that this problem was reported to EnGenius Support by multiple users over the past year, and there has been no apparent progress.

Other Thoughts: The EAP350 works great with multi-SSIDs with VLAN tagging. Too bad the EAP350 is only single band. I sure with the EAP600 would work as advertised!

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Snichols,

We can assure you that the Multiple SSIDs and VLAN tagging function has worked since the launch of the EAP600. This is very common configuration and there are literally thousands of EAP600 units deployed in this manner.

We urge you to contact technical support for help on configuration. You may reach us through our number at 1-888-735-7888 (Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 4:00pm PDT) or e-mail us at support@engeniustech.com (Saturday, Sunday 8am - 4pm PDT).. Our support team would be glad to be of service to you.

Thank you for your patience and we look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Engenius Customer Support Team

5 out of 5 eggsGreat coverage for the $

Pros: Powerful, great coverage for the price

Cons: You have to read the manual, - some menu items are not as intuitive as other brands. That said, there is nothing that really compares at this price point.

Other Thoughts: I have deployed in grocery stores and when put in the center ceiling height, it works everywhere in the store (in the coolers, rear areas, parking lot… As with any WAP, make sure you do a site frequency survey an set the unit up correctly. I also used the 5G to bridge for a few distant IP cameras.

3 out of 5 eggsNot enterprise ready

Pros: Nice looking web interface. CLI access is available. 2.4ghz been very stable. VLAN tagging capable.

Cons: 5ghz has been nothing but a hassle. Unable to use a custom channel, only auto. Support has responded once to ask what model and firmware version. I have not heard back as of yet. Some config changes result in no more SSID broadcasting even though it should not matter at all.

Other Thoughts: I really do like the VLAN tagging feature, but I need to be able to set a static 5ghz channel. I chose this based on previous models having great reviews. Looking over at the EnGenius forums shows other people having similar issues with this model.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Frank,

Thank you for purchasing the EAP600.

The EAP600 has been deployed by the thousands in enterprise environments and we can assure you that the 5 GHz channel selection feature does indeed work. In fact, when deployed in a high user density environment where there are many access points, we recommend manually setting static channels. You may have tried setting the EAP600 to a channel in the UNII 2 range which are subject to DFS as mandated by the FCC. For indoor deployments we recommend using channels 36, 40, 44, and 48. Avoid using channels 52 – 140 for the reason already stated, and use channels 149, 153, 157 and 161 for outdoor.

If you require further assistance please call EnGenius technical support 888-735-7888.

Sincerely,

EnGenius Customer Support Team

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect WiFi

Pros: Blends well where mounted, LED control (by LED), strong signal, option to ignore federal broadcast regulations.

Cons: Weird interface

Other Thoughts: I put two of these in my home, one upstairs and one downstairs. I have 100% signal throughout the house and >90% signal outdoors on property. Solid, never needs reboot.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Access Point

Pros: * Dual band. This is nice since it makes it possible for 5G capable wifi devices to relieve congestion on the 2.4 band in my house.
* Fairly easy to mount in ceiling.

Cons: The antennas don't have good enough range in part of the house I live. I have bumped the power up a bit on the 2.4 and 5 bands and it does help but it isn't perfect. This might be because of HVAC/Furnace that is in direct path.

Other Thoughts: I am using along with a EAP 350 in my basement. This makes it possible to have *mostly* whole house wifi coverage.
The EAP 350's was originally in the same place (ceiling) as the EAP 600 but its poe port got fried over the phone line by a lightning strike. So, the EAP 350 only works via AC now.

5 out of 5 eggsVery easy setup

Pros: very easy setup. SAVE is done after configuring all the options. This is good when you need to change internal IP address.
It works for few weeks without touching it.

Cons: few came with wrong ac adapter.

Other Thoughts: 2 ac adapter came with European connector when I ordered 5 units We did not have problem because we had few ac adapters laying around.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello bae,

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great!

Pros: Smaller, looks like a smoke detector, runs fairly cool, POE, VLAN Support, Multiple SSID.... Wall mount works well, comes with all hardware. Well thought out, i'd say.

Cons: Internal antennas limit range, compared to say, Asus RT-N66U. But it's still fairly strong.

Other Thoughts: Easy setup, I like how you can queue up changes, and apply at the end... Seems stable, no reboots or weird issues yet. I'm using the VLAN tags with a Cisco ASA, works great.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Value for the $$ -

Pros: I've set up two of these units to cover 4500 sq over 3 storyes and separate garage. I've only had one issue with dropping which I configured around (see cons)
This unit supports VLANS and multiple SSIDs. Setting up a spanning tree network, I configured the two units almost identically and each support SSIDs, one SSID for the kid's access and one SSID for home-business access. The two SSIDs exist on different VLans assuring data separation and load segregation. (This did require a switch that supports Vlans) Also note, I actually set up 3 ssids - a 2.4Gz SSID for the Kids network, a 2.4 Gz SSID for the business network and another SSID on the 5Gz band for the business alone (no Kids on that band)

Additionally, because of the PoE support, it's easy to place these devices anywhere you can run the cat 5e cable.

Cons: One of the units was occasionally dropping packets (or so it seemed) making use of the AP painful. After some diagnosis, I found that the wiring to the unit was not quite up to par to support 1Gb *and* PoE. The solution to this was to administratively force the port speed to 100Mb. Unfortunately, this configuration option is NOT available on the EAP600, So I had to do it on the switch. Once I did this, I have had no dropped packets and the unit has run flawlessly.

Other Thoughts: As stated before, this AP may not be for the faint of heart unless you have good tech support. If you're going to use any of the advanced features, you almost need to have a very configurable managed switch (I used a Cisco 300 PoE 28 port switch)

5 out of 5 eggsWe installed 32 of these in a school

Pros: These access points are what I call "Mid Tier" business grade access points and are at a price point that is very good. We had had a tremendous amount of stability using almost all of the features. We have 5 SSID's on each radio talking to different VLANS and everything works pefectly.

Cons: We had some issues with configuration on how the VLAN settings were labeled. But once you understand how this works, it worked without any problems.

Other Thoughts: Overall - I don't think you will find a more feature rich dual band access point that looks good for commercial applications at a more reasonable price. They have held up to fairly high temperatures (130 degrees) and haven't had any issues.
