1 out of 5 eggsGood on paper, alot of grips. now that it died..

Pros: Gigabit switch.
Wireless N that had good coverage.
Interface of software.
Looks of the unit.

Cons: This unit would over heat to a point where the plastic on the bottom of the unit is discoloured yellowish due to the board heat.
Internet kept dropping out for my mobile devices, it would lose negotiation with dhcp.
Ethernet was also experiencing wireless drops as well, not as frequent as the wireless.
Now my unit has finally stopped working. The power supply is working, but the unit would try to boot up and just die. If I disconnect and connect the power, it would come on and repeat the process.

Other Thoughts: A shame that the unit has excellent specs, but the quality of it , killed its luster. I would not get a unit from ZyXel again. It worries me that it has a serious heat issue, I even think other could be a fire hazard. I also have a gigabyte switch as well, same heat issue but worse.

1 out of 5 eggsAmended review

Pros: Gigabit switch, good UI and docs

Cons: Unreliable

Other Thoughts: Forget my previous review. A few days later, the router began to lock up regularly, losing wireless connectivity and the ability to access the UI. this occurred even overnight when the only traffic was NTP updates and DHCP lease renewals. Upgrading to the latest firmware had no effect.

Sent it back.

4 out of 5 eggsGood, reliable router

Pros: Reliable, good signal strength, 1000mbps switch, good docs

Cons: None significant

Other Thoughts: I bought this unit on the strength of my good experience in the distant past with Zyxel dial-up modems and after trying two TP-Link TL-WR1043NDs that constantly dropped wireless connections, among other problems.

I've now had this router running continuously for 1 week with absolutely no dropped connections or other problems. Setup was straightforward via the browser interface and the unit provides a good wireless signal throughout my house. Unlike many of the other consumer level routers, it has the useful ability to log traffic, not just administrative events and to log to a syslog server. It also saves each configuration backup with a different filename so you can easily keep multiple different ones. This router seems to have been designed by people who are used to designing pro-level equipment.

I'm running the 3/2009 firmware and don't know whether I'll bother to upgrade to the 9/2009 version since all is working well.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks, now

Pros: 802.11n, good range, no drops, lots of configuration options.

Cons: Firmware problem when purchased.

Other Thoughts: We have 5 laptops. Out of the box, router would not connect to more then one computer at a time. Download speed sucked, even when only one computer was on. Flashed firmware. Works fine now. Should have been right from the start, would have been 4 eggs.

5 out of 5 eggsJ. A. Brony says > Works Well

Pros: Works great!!! Many settings, can be configured as an access point or router. "N" band capable, got it to 270mbps.

Cons: None really. Entering the gui is a little peculiar.

Other Thoughts: Buy it.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Wireless Router

Pros: This is an excellent wireless router with many useful features. It supports the usual security mechanisms including WPA/WPA2 and WPS. Configuration is straightforward using the WEB configurator, and a command-line interface is provided via telnet. Performance is excellent, and I did not experience the much reported service loss even before installing the latest firmware. As is usual with ZyXel products, the device provides more features than you would expect for the price. The firmware update process is quick, easy, and trouble-free. The documentation is extensive (340 pages) and well organized, but it would be nice to have a command line interface reference. ZyXel often provides new features instead of just bug fixes in their product firmware updates, and the 3.60(BFD.2) update of March 2009 adds WDS technology.

Cons: -The firewall is not very robust. I would not use it for my main network firewall. (Thankfully, I have a ZyWall 5 for this.)
-There is no documentation for the command line interface. (A basic command chart can be obtained by downloading the latest firmware update.)
-The features of AP mode are limited. This may be due to the nature of AP technology, or it may be a price-point limitation, which is not unreasonable. I was forced to router mode for the DHCP and “All IP” features which are not available in AP mode.

Other Thoughts: This is an great product at a great price. I have long experience with network firewalls both professionally and personally, and I would NOT recommend using this in a public-facing network boundary. Other ZyXel products offer superior capabilities for this purpose. Other aspects of the device are rock solid and much superior to the more well known brands. I have been sold on ZyXel for years, and this device is one more solid performer in an extensive product line.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Absolutely none, DOA / nothing personal, Newegg excellent to deal with as usual.

Cons: Did not work, period. Wireless did not connect at 3 feet,
firmware update is useless, absolutely no difference. For reference my X550 G Band has a solid unwavering/never drops or resets at 90YDS. yes Yards (shot with a laser rangefinder) I have seen the same issues with other N band units.

Other Thoughts: I am amazed as the owner of a X550 and a P600-H series ADSL modem, and having installed numerous Zyxel routers (ie. experience with the quality) that someone could a decision so STUPID as to replace a unit as rock solid as the X550 with this flawed N Band unit. Careful Zyxel your ruining a good reputation, those of us who work with this equipment will respect you far more if you stand your ground with top shelf G Band units that Work, Period! than if you just jump in and yell me to with a poor working N Band unit.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid Performer

Pros: It works great. Has a nice strong signal and a good amount of options.

Cons: -As with the last ZyXEL i owned, the WebGUI can be cumbersome
-There is an issue printing to my wife's shared printer. Instead of figuring it out I just plugged the printer into my NAS.

Other Thoughts: Good price, plenty of control, a solid router.

1 out of 5 eggsMost expensive and worst router

Pros: 1. It has many advance features.
2. Never had problem with wired Ethernet

Cons: It is not that my particular device is broken, because it was already replaced. It is how this router works. Here is my experience:
1. 802.11n shows high connection speed, but effective data throughput is even lower than 802.11g.
2. Multiple devices (Skype NetGear phone, Brother printer) have problems connecting to the router if WiFi is set to WPA. The same devices have no problems connecting to other routers with WPA. They can also connect to Zyxel without WPA
3. Immediately after connecting Zyxel X-550N to my network I lost connection between XBOX 360 and Windows XP MCE. Zyxel support offered very limited help. After spending many hours, I found that XBOX-MCE needs Multicast IGMP which is OFF by default. XBOX-MCE works on other routers on factory settings.
4. The router offers many advance features, like bandwidth management, but they are implemented in a user-unfriendly way. Very difficult to set anything up without spending hours of research.
5. In general, WiFi connection wit

1 out of 5 eggsGreat performance but not reliable

Pros: Fast gigabit switch. Didn't have a chance to test N wireless yet but G devices work faster then Linksys & TP-link G-routers. Runs reasonably cool.
Wanted to give it 5 eggs the first 2 days but...

Cons: Now, This is crying shame that all that performance is worthless because of simple bug in the firmware.
Disconnects Internet almost every day! Sometimes it disconnects on me when I'm downloading multiple files from fast severs (like podcasts or updates) at 1.6 Mbyte/s suddenly Internet is gone. I still can log in to the router and reset it from the menu. Other PCs are still visible as well. This is WAN issue.

Other Thoughts: Please hear me Zyxel techs! Would it kill you to add "keep alive" function with option of automatic reboot when it fails? I can live for now with occasional disconnects if it would reconnect automatically, but it doesn't until manual reboot. Last firmware update is 3/11/9?!!! You are not even trying to fix it!
