3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It worked well for 8 months. I got what I expected, a fairly complete (for a personal PC firewall) set of protections, without the complexity of a network system firewall. The most (or one of the most) inexpensive hardware firewall available.

Cons: I unplugged my whole system for a week and the firewall never worked again. It simply died. Ever since I kept using my software firewall, haven't tried again.

5 out of 5 eggsFinally, full broadband speed!

Pros: Allows your full broadband speed to pass thru. Compact. Very inexpensive, but not cheaply made.

Cons: Very difficult user interface for those who do not understand computer networking and VPN setups. Only 1 VPN to VPN tunnel.

Other Thoughts: My Office bought 2 of these to use for a test and allowed me to try one at home, I have an older Sonicwall Tele 3 that I could have bought 8 of these for the same price I paid for it! The Sonicwall somehow really choked out my full Broadband speed by 2 thirds. When I installed this unit I had my full bandwidth speed that I use to get only with my PC plugged straight into my cable modem. I will update this at some point in the future after I test 2 of these in a sit to site VPN and let you know how well they work in that configuration. The ZyXcel support said you can use 2 of these units in such a setup so we will see.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: Bought this to replace non-working software VPN clients for Vista. Works great.

Must upgrade firmware for best performance.

The feature-set is highly configurable.

The connection is solid, and relatively speedy.

Cons: Disable the connection keep-alive, since the ping times are not adjustable.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Easy to use with good throughput (see cons). Linux based (so I believe), Could just use an old box with two nic's and build your own for free using iptables, squid, snort, and clamav. But takes up no room! Size of a PDA. Very nice for that.

Cons: Congests network. I run a multi-boxed linux network at home and noticed that firewall likes to choke net when downloading updates/installs. Most likely because of ids and antivirus, although if settings are on, and you get choked, merely turning off this packet scanning requires reset of firewall to free up bandwidth. But I did not buy if for these pay services, only on using free trial. Also command line interface contains very few commands more or less restricting you to use the web interface.

Other Thoughts: For the price, this cannot be beat

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Product

Pros: Handles multiple connections. Works perfect for IPSEC site to site or client to server. Super Cheap for the capability. Support is excellent! I haven't used them, but I referred a client to use their support and they had a great experience.

Cons: Comes with cripled firmware in that DHCP only assigns one client IP address.

Other Thoughts: The firmware is easily upgradable from the website. There are IDS and Antivirus subscription services you can purchase from Zyxel.

4 out of 5 eggsbottleneck burden

Pros: after firmware upgrade, incredible feature set. easy installation and manageability. 1-month free trial of AV + IDP.

Cons: choked my cable connection to half the bandwidth i normally get. this was with all security enabled (AV, IDP, Firewall).

Other Thoughts: if this had more memory/processing power, it would be great as a first line of defense for a home network. it's still great actually if you're not keen on large video file downloads. does what is says and does it well. with all features on, i still get the same voip quality as when their off so if you worry about that, it's not noticeable. there's supposed to be a firmware release that enables content filtering as well. i can only imagine this eating up more resources and further inhibiting WAN throughput. still, a good product.

1 out of 5 eggsnewegg UPS RMA Return Shipping Label

Pros: Shiny, Good Price. If it works, I'm sure it does a decent job.. Bridge mode worked... but...

Cons: Not compatible with all usb (this is not specified anywhere) since it draws more power then some usb adapters can put out. Routing did not work. No amount of factory resets, firmware up/downgrades, etc. would make it route out to the wan. Only once was I able to ping the wan gateway, but after a restart no more. Also, IDP is licensed separately, ala SonicWall, which my $30 USR router does. CLI on the unit is very limited.

Other Thoughts: Item arrived and I plugged it in via usb. Apparently, it's not compatible with all usb, as my usb port didn't have enough power for it. Switched to plug power, upgraded to latest 4.03 firmware, so far so good... Plugged it into my cable modem, it picked up the wan ip. Apparently, it was able to get and cache dns data but nothing else, all routing was broken on this sucker.

5 out of 5 eggsOne powerful little box

Pros: once you update the firmware this becomes one of the most capable network devices I have seen, I bought it for the firewall and am very pleased, Im sure if I used the other features I would be equally pleased because everything is highly configurable. Also it seems to regulate network traffic really well like when watching a youtube video, it used to come in bursts, a little at a time, now the flow is much more regular, that is just an observation I have not tested anything.

Cons: the initial disappointment of the lack of features with the firmware that comes shipped with the device.
UPDATING THE FIRMWARE IS A MUST if before version 4.03!

Other Thoughts: it sits between my DSL router and network switch, and DHCP server is capable of servicing 30 addresses (after firmware update, only one address before).

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent little device

Pros: Does everything it claims to do.
Easy to setup
Good logging options

Cons: Manual that came with it didn't match the firmware that came with it, which was different still from the latest firmware that I put on it.

Other Thoughts: Bought this primarily to put my UNIX workstation over VPN connectivity from a remote site to my office, I didn't really care about firewalls and anti-virus, although it's a bonus. As a VPN I connected tunneled it to a Linksys BEFVP41 at the office and it works perfectly. Hasn't dropped connection is 4 days like I had troubles with a different device. VPN throughut it much better than my windows based VPN client. Easy to setup and use if you have experience with setting up VPN's. Good logging to show you whats wrong when your tunnel setup wasn't right.
