2 out of 5 eggsTerrible Documents

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL USG50 Internet Security Firewall with Dual-WAN, 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 5 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN, and 3G WAN Support

Pros: It's fast, I bought it to replace my Sonicwall TZ190 at home. The TZ190 has very slow throughput and this unit used every bit of my download band width with qos on 7 for the wan port.

Cons: This is not my first firewall, I have worked with other brands including Sonicwall, Cisco andPalo Alto at work. This firewall has the worst documents of any I have ever seen. Creating rules and nat policies are pretty much the same as any other firewall but the settings for options and connectivity are sometimes hidden and the manuals are by far the worst I have ever seen. I had to use google to find procedures for simple things that I should not have. I never used tech support so I can't comment on the support side but I really shouldn't have to use google to find answers to some of the questions I had.

Other Thoughts: The CLI documentation seemed to be better than the manual but since it uses different commands you have to learn a whole new set of commands that are different from Cisco to make changes.

5 out of 5 eggsTop Notch Support, Nice Unit!

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL USG50 Internet Security Firewall with Dual-WAN, 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 5 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN, and 3G WAN Support

Pros: Received from Newegg right on time, basic set up was a breeze. After a couple of weeks it stopped connecting to WAN but was good on LAN. After trying to get it to connect I gave in and called US tech Support. Was talking to Timothy within 5 minutes. He was very patient and together we went through the settings and had it up again within about 15 minuets. It had dropped my ISP's password but still showed the dots in the field.

I knew going in by reading the comments here that it was not a toy and had a steep learning curve. It indeed has, however to run through the basic set up to get online is a breeze. It is not till you get into the serious side that you will need to do some reading. Or just give them a call.

Cons: None Really

Other Thoughts: All said I am very pleased with both the product and the well above average support.

5 out of 5 eggsoutstanding!

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL USG50 Internet Security Firewall with Dual-WAN, 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 5 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN, and 3G WAN Support

Pros: for the money, this is one extremely capable product!

Cons: configuration of this unit is more confusing that it ought to be.

Other Thoughts: if you already know what you're doing, then you'll enjoy using cheap/powerful little firewall. if not, then you're in for an experience. ;-)

2 out of 5 eggsNice if you don't care what your traffic is up to.

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL USG50 Internet Security Firewall with Dual-WAN, 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 5 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN, and 3G WAN Support

Pros: Works almost as described. No issues setting any of the features up. The admin is a bit ehh but who really see's that. Don't bother trying to configure without google.

Cons: Trying to find out whats happening with your traffic isn't very good. You can get an overall throughput of each physical port, and interface but there's no way to get live traffic throughput per ip address. If you have one user on your system sucking up all the bandwidth good luck finding them! There's also an overall traffic view in the admin but it doesn't show throughput, only how much traffic was sent/received per ip if the user is in the middle of downloading a huge file it will not show up here until the whole file is downloaded. This was a huge negative for me and I'm surprised a device like this doesn't have those options. (not even through snmp)

Other Thoughts: Overall I'm disappointed. Knowing what traffic is happening per IP I think is pretty important. I figured at the very least I would be able to snmp to get the information. I also thought of transferring the traffic statistics over to a server and grepping through them to get a live view of whats going on, but the same problem exists thats in the admin is you won't get a current view of whats going on, but a view of whats already happened.

1 out of 5 eggsWhat Protection?

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL USG50 Internet Security Firewall with Dual-WAN, 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 5 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN, and 3G WAN Support

Pros: It powered on..
Nice user interface..

Cons: This happened twice.. I upgraded firmware and fully locked down the firewall. As soon as I connected it to the modem I saw that my network was being attacked. I have one Linux machine on my network thats it.. I use this for home protection, Instantly I had multiple admin sessions on the GUI, I used Wireshark to watch my egress packets leaving with probably all of my personal data to multiple ip addresses that shouldn't have been on my network (confirmed with scanning via mmap). I immediately contacted tech support, they guy replied in broken slang english saying "cause it's shipped fully locked down by default", O' okay, now I feel better. THE FIREWALL IS NOT FULLY LOCKED DOWN BY DEFAULT! I invite you to check the Vulnerability section inside the GUI. This firewall is a joke, I noticed multiple PTPP tunnels in my system both times within minutes of turning on the network.. Spent hours setting and re-setting this useless paper-weight up, wish I could return it.. I have lost ALL confidence in the ability of this device.

Other Thoughts: I wish I would have saved the log files to show everyone what a joke your product is.. I only hope i can sell this on an auction site to recover my investment..

5 out of 5 eggsGood product; Excellent Support

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL USG50 Internet Security Firewall with Dual-WAN, 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 5 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN, and 3G WAN Support

Pros: Device is very powerful as far as configuration and capabilities go. I'm only subscribing to Intrusion/Anomaly Detection and Antivirus but they seem to work well. IDP has blocked a few intrusions attempts (we've been under attack and a Linksys SOHO router/SPI firewall didn't stop it; but this has).
Documentation is fairly complex (especially if you are new at networking) but more detailed than most I've scene.

Zyxel phone support is AWESOME!!! I've called them 3 times in the last week for assistance setting up the USG50. Wait time was <5 min and I got an english speaking 1st tier tech who knew the product. Each time the tech got right to the problem without wasting my time with scripts and stupid questions. They use remote sessions (join.me and remote login to the device) to good effect. On my last call they even help me troubleshoot non-Zyxel VPN software! He walked me through configuring Windows IPSec/L2TP and troubleshot it to find an IKE service that had been disabled. He also downloaded the free TheGreenbow VPN client (not the Zyxel one) to his computer to help me get it working. Their tech support is WAY better than Linksys (which wasn't bad).

Excellent price for the features (see below for performance comments).

Unit outputs to Syslog and SNMP as well as email alerts. Syslog has quite a few configuration options to get the detail you need.

You can run the device without the IDP/AV/Content subscriptions. You get 30 day trials on each subscription.

Cons: This device seems to straddle SOHO and enterprise gear as far as features go. It's powerful but has a decent learning curve. Not really a con since adding capability also increases complexity; just be sure to leave time to play with the device and learn before dropping into production on a deadline. Again it's not really a con; it is what it is. And Zyxel phone support certain makes up for the added complexity.

The tradeoff on this device is its performance. LAN-WAN throughput is around 200 Mbps and NAT/SPI drops it to around 90 Mbps. Adding Intrusion/Antivirus scanning reduces it to around 30 Mbps. It wasn't a problem for me (30 down/2.5 up) but it might be a bottleneck for some folks. Again, at this price point it's not a con. For $210 it's great for most small businesses.

Other Thoughts: Great value, outstanding phone support, decent learning curve you're new to enterprise grade networking and especially if you're new to networking in general.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great one configured

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL USG50 Internet Security Firewall with Dual-WAN, 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 5 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN, and 3G WAN Support

Pros: Great throughput, handles multiple VPN tunnels with no problems. Price is right and so far, reliability seems good. Top notch tech support.

Cons: Configuration can be a bit tricky. Some things which were supposed to work automatically (as per Zyxel support) didn't. One example is that when you have multiple subnets, they are supposed to be able to talk to each other by default. Not the case. Had to define policy routes and firewall rule to specifically allow.

Other Thoughts: Like every router, this has its own set of peculiarities. Things that are called one thing by vendor have a diffrerent name. Once you get past that, it is a very robust router. I compared it to Cisco products with the same functionality and this won hands down for my small 4 site network.

Zyxel tech support is not always quick to pick up the phone and are not good about returning messages. However, once you get them on the phone, they will stay with you until your problems are resolved and they seem to be based here in the US, which is a plus. The techs are knowledgeable and will seek out a senior tech if they cannot figure out the problem in short order. Never did they just say "reset the router and start again" or "it seems to not be our problem". They always work to resolve the problem and keep you up and running. Their tech support alone makes these products worth buying,

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome little box

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL USG50 Internet Security Firewall with Dual-WAN, 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 5 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN, and 3G WAN Support

Pros: Too many features to mention. flexible, granular customization capabilities, with a nice GUI making it easy enough for a home user to use

Cons: The subscription services are too expensive and should probably be bundled at an affordable cost some of the terminology used in the GUI is ambiguous or just odd. You may need to look at blogs, and google a few things to understand what some fields are really asking for, and the manual is a bit weak, but it does have a lot to cover. It stops short of giving you all the details you need to configure some services to your preference.

Other Thoughts: This unit may not be for a large enterprise, but on the second try i was able to configure firewall rules, an L2TP/ipsec VPN, set up ADP and IDP, logging and test the functionality i was interested in, and this thing seems rock solid, I have read that the current firmware tanks performance if you use bandwidth management (QOS), but my connection isn't fast enough to begin to test that - I saw no difference between speeds before and after applying the few features i use. Don't forget this device also costs a little over half of what a low-end Cisco ASA does, and you don't have to learn Cisco's CLI just to get basic features running.

5 out of 5 eggsPerforms Well Beyond its Price Point

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL USG50 Internet Security Firewall with Dual-WAN, 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 5 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN, and 3G WAN Support

Pros: Reliable, Highly configurable, Dual WAN support, good Tech Support, good value.

Cons: User interface may be a intimidating.

Other Thoughts: I'll echo what the previous reviewer said. Let's understand exactly what this is: a reasonably low cost, business-class router/firewall. We needed one that had dual-WAN support, and it came down to this and a couple of Cisco's lower end offerings. Given the relatively poor reviews of the Cisco's, I decided to give the USG50 a whirl. After several months of continuous service, I'm glad I did.

Job One: Reliability. The USG50 passes this with flying colors. In the months it has been in service, it has not rebooted or required rebooting once. It has not dropped a connection that I can see, nor has it cough, hiccuped, sputtered, or otherwise misbehaved. It just functions reliably and with no attention from me.

Job Two: Handling Dual WANS. Yep. We have a cable modem that carries most of the weight, with DSL as a backup and overflow. It handles the spillover fine, when I have induced failovers, it handles those quickly, and when the failed WAN is restored, it comes back quickly.

Job Three: Configurability. Yep. My needs are few, and it handles all of them. I have certain IP addresses (an outgoing mail server) that has to go through the DSL line for authentication. That took about two minutes to set up, 75 seconds of that finding the IP address of the mail server. I have other addresses I want to ensure always go through the cable modem (WAN1) unless it is down (video streaming). Again, it takes as much time to look up the IP address of the sites as it does to enter the routing rule. I could also just assign the IP address of the internal streaming devices to WAN1 (again, unless it is down), but I am too lazy to do that (and it would probably be a better solution).

Factor Four: Tech Support. Check. When the cable modem was installed, I was having a problem that appeared to be the USG50 defaulting to the DSL speed. I called Zyxel Tech Support twice, and although they were scratching their heads, they at least knew what they were doing and understood their product. Had I bothered to check the error log, I would have found the USG50 was working exactly as it should when the patch cable on the cable modem is faulty.

Add to that the firmware upgrade process is relatively painless.

It takes a bit to get used to the object oriented user interface. But, once you figure out what exactly each of the fields wants and the logic of how it works, it is pretty easy to work with. I've messed with the command line interface, and it is cryptic, but they all are.

I can't speak to the VLAN capability or some of the deeper functions. I have not tried the UTM features, although I had thought about the anti-virus. I may rethink that reading the previous review.

At this price point, I think I'd be hard pressed to find a better router/firewall. Given the cost, just using it as a basic, reliable, dual-WAN router/firewall is a decent value. The fact that it offers flexibility beyond that for more advanced needs and wants is a bo
