The EPS supports Norton, Kaspersky and TrendMicro AV client software, among others. Additionally, personal firewall software such as Kaspersky Internet Security 2009/2010, Windows Firewall and TrendMicro PC-Cillin/Internet Security 2010 are also supported with the new EPS feature.

Using IPSec VPN, companies can secure connections to branch offices, partners and headquarters. Road warriors and telecommuters can use SSL VPN to safely access the company network without having to install VPN software. The Series provides a flexible and easy way to enable mobile employees, vendors and partners to confidently access your network resource for better efficiency. (The following features will be ready in a future firmware upgrade in December 2011; 1) VPN Fail-over / Fall-back, 2) SSLVPN Reverse Proxy Mode, 3) SSLVPN File Sharing.)
  • newegg Application Firewall More and more network applications bring malicious software into your office. This kind of unwanted software, especially IM/P2P applications, may cause bandwidth waste or even system damage. Using the application patrol and bandwidth management features, you can have full control over traffic blocking or rate limit settings.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well, fast but licensing $$$

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20 Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support

Pros: Lots of options, it is a true firewall
Fast, utilizes the full bandwidth of my provider
Fast, with multiple users playing online video games, no drops

Cons: The content filter and email filters cost more then the firewall!. I am not falling for that, sorry. If it was like $50 a year total for both, I would probably pay for it.

5 out of 5 eggsUnbelievably awesome

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20 Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support

Pros: Simple hardware, complex enough software, SUPERB support

Cons: Blocking or allowing certain addresses must be done by puitting each address into an object. Multiples must be put into a group, then a group can be added to a firewall rule. There's no way to add a raw address to a rule, nor is there a way to add a raw address to an address group. Meaning if you have 10 addresses to block, you have to add 10 address objects, then add an address group, then add those 10 addresses to the group. It's a bit over-complicated

It has no way to specify certain settings for DHCP clients. I use this in my home in conjunction with my office where we have a couple USG50's. But it doesn't support upnp, so I have a secondary router that handles xbox traffic for the 5 xboxes in the house. Each xbox has to have a static IP configuration rather than me being able to specify that each DHCP reservation has a different gateway address.

Other Thoughts: Their support is awesome and free. When I call they absolutely never ask for a serial number, and don't care how old the device is. They are quick to log into the device and help with any configuration or troubleshooting. Because of this, I will continue to buy ZyXel devices for our network.

1 out of 5 eggsBurned out after warranty expired

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20 Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support

Pros: Very powerful, flexible. A (seemingly) good choice for a high end home office.

Cons: One day the thing simply stopped working. It booted and gave connection lights, but the network connections never worked. Reset it several times to factory settings, but still got same wonky network behavior. Weather has been clear around here, so there's little chance of a surge having fried it.

It's a few weeks out of warranty so I'm out of luck. Save yourself the same risk, go with a better brand.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed - QoS/BMW broken

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20 Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support

Pros: Cheap affordable unit. Has SSL VPN capability. (Limited to 1 connection.)

Cons: This unit has failed to meet my needs. I purchased this with the hope that IPv6 Prefix Delegation with Comcast would work. It has failed to do that properly with my own setup. Since I use Comcast Business, it's possible that it has not been enabled for my service. Various forum posts suggest that this unit still does not work with Comcast's IPv6 setup in places where it should.

The biggest sin of this device is that it can't even manage do a decent job of QoS. It's called BMW in their interface. My Buffalo Tech wireless router does a better job of managing QoS. Supposedly the latest version of the firmware broke BMW. I also wonder if the processor being used is a bit on the slow side. With the few rules that I had enabled for QoS, I saw the CPU usage spike 30% - 50%.

I own Zyxel powerline networking products, but I won't buy or even suggest that someone buy their firewall products.

Other Thoughts: If you want to buy this, I suggest that you look through the various forum posting about the device. I'm going to wait for another firmware revision before I completely dump this device. Current version 3.30 BDQ.2.

I'll probably end up building my own unit using Linux when I can find an Intel Atom setup that I like.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat web UI, not for beginners

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20 Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support

Pros: Extremely powerful web interface! It is object oriented, that is a new experience for me when it comes to networking hardware configurations. After 15 minutes of poking around it makes complete sense. Tons of bells and whistles, a lot of features are not going to be used by a small business. Medium to large businesses (and network requirements) should find almost everything you're looking for.

Cons: Plastic housing. Fan cooled, just another possible failure point. Extremely limited VPN abilities. Seriously, only 2 IPSec tunnels?

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for VPN capabilities, this is not the device for you. It meets my needs, but is limited.

If your experience in configuring routers is limited to the simple web-based GUI the likes of Linksys and D-Link, this is NOT for you. Unless you're willing to learn, which I highly suggest. It isn't THAT hard...

1 out of 5 eggsDifficult to program, VOIP issues

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20 Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support

Pros: Their customer support is easy to get hold of and very knowledgeable, helped me out with VPN and RDP port setups.

Cons: I am able to do setup VPN's and open ports on other routers like Linksys and Netgear business class equipment, but not this guy.
Also no one could get a Polycom IP331 phone to work behind it at all, but the phone would work fine on any other router, even 3 chained together !!! I even put a phone on a DMZ port and nothing.

Other Thoughts: Sorry Zyxel, won't be using your stuff again....maybe I am just too dumb for your gear !!!

3 out of 5 eggsNot Impressed

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20 Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support

Pros: Its inexpensive for what it is.

Cons: I had my cousin purchase this for his small business specifically for the SSL VPN functionality. i failed to read the fine print evidently it only support 1 concurrent SSL VPN connection? what exactly is the point of that? for our use it makes it slightly better than any cheap firewall on the market.

The admin console is almost completely useless; its worse than a radware load balancer gui as a comparison and doesn't really follow any convention that's recognizable from other networking devices i have had experience with. Poorly layed out and difficult to navigate.

5 out of 5 eggsCheap Powerplant

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20 Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support

Pros: Things i like about this little unit.
1. Gigabit ports. Made network fast, and worked great streaming blu rays from my NAS.
2. SSL VPN- I tied it in with my Domain name, and now i can hit my server from anywhere. If i need to check anything at home i'm only a web page away.
3. The interface is laid out nicely.
4. Snappy and quick. No lag when setting the device up through the GUI.

Cons: 1. The zyxel 50 has a metal housing, the 20 has a plastic one, and its not rack mountable, the 50 is. The 50 also has another WAN port, and a few more SSL lics.
2. Initial setup, and finding your way around the interface can be a daunting task, but once you spend some time with it, it becomes natural.

Other Thoughts: Get it, for the money its worth it if your looking for a Firewall/VPN appliance. I was going to get the Cisco 5505, but it doesnt have gigabit ports.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic value

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20 Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support

Pros: Amazingly configurable. Some learning curve learning how to configure, but once you get the paradigm, it saves you a lot of effort in the future. The only fw/router I've owned that supports IPV6 and has usable VPN options that actually work for me. I've actually got my Android phone connecting to this thing over IPSEC/L2TP using the latest firmware. I'm impressed. Over 6 months of use and not even the first glitch.

Cons: Case looks a little cheap and flimsy. But not bad at this price point.

Other Thoughts: This is a terrific home router. The upgraded firmware provides some highly sought after features that you'll find on much more expensive routers. I got this one on sale, but even at full price, I'm would be very pleased with this device.

2 out of 5 eggsI might have to think again!

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20 Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support

Pros: Features are robust. (Note: Please see my other review by : "defilm".

Cons: I have 3 of these firewalls. One arrived DOA (Bad power connecter on the motherboard), and Newegg replaced it. But it was a major inconvenience. It was replacing a Sonicwall TZ-170, a device I trust far more because it is a sonicwall and not a Zyxel. I have one in my media center to protect my media login's etc. I have one in a small home office environment. Now I purchased it in early September, and the second was DOA as well.

So I have 2 units purchased. 9/16/12, that was DOA. Another unit 9/25/12 I just booted and the login screen does come up, but upon logging in the default account, clearly there is a firmware issue. Because it is over 90 days I have to send it off to ZyXEL and I know that is going to take a few weeks. So I just purchased another while I send a Brand NEW UNIT out to what I understand is terrible support and prey for the best. In the mean-time I dropped another $150 on a unit so I can have it in a week from Newegg.

The irony is that when the REFURB unit is sent back to me to replace my second DOA Brand new USG20, I am really concerned that this interim unit I just ordered is going to be DOA, or have a motherboard, or firmware problem.

My professional assessment having been in IT Design for nearly 30 years is that there is little to no Q/A in their process. If they are ISO 900x compliant I would be shocked!
As far as security, I have not had a test done, but I suspect I should do so. I have access to a Tiger Team. I believe I will have them test the unit, and publish the results. Who knows if there are holes. I am certain there are as we find them all the time in commercial firewalls that are $50K and up. This is only $150.

Other Thoughts: I figure I will keep the RMA unit, once it is returned, as a "cold backup". However, if the unit I just ordered arrives and is DOA, which I will not make the mistake of letting it sit for over 90 days, than I will indeed lose all confidence in their product and will seek a refund on all three units. I realize that may be an uphill battle, but I have taken companies to court before. Often once the papers are filed, before it goes to trial, my attorney gets a call, and I get my refund and filing fees back. If not.. it goes to court. In the interim I think I need to take a step up in quality. I made a mistake buying ZyXEL in my opinion.
