5 out of 5 eggsGreat switch

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1100-16 Unmanaged 16 Port Unmanaged Gigabit Rackmount Switch

Pros: Does everything they say it does. Haven't had a single performance problem in the 8 months of constant up-time.

Cons: Didn't come with mounting screws for a rack.

Other Thoughts: I got this switch because my router only had 3 LAN ports on it and I picked up 2 new computers and a dual LAN server. I've had everything running on it without issue since I got it. It fit perfectly in my server rack.

The only thing I was dissappointed with is that it didn't come with rack mounting hardware. I guess in a business environment you would probably buy a large package of cage nuts and screws, but I didn't want to drop the money on that for this one item. Not removing an egg because I think my situation is not the norm.

4 out of 5 eggsInteresting comments...

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1100-16 Unmanaged 16 Port Unmanaged Gigabit Rackmount Switch

Pros: Not moving parts so silent. Negotiates fastest speeds reliably. Compact yet still still rack mountable.

Cons: Not really a con as much as a user problem, but it has a button on the front for 802.3az functionality. I have found buttons to disqualify any product from being idiot-proof. Eliminate any buttons to keep this working as intended. Otherwise its the first thing that gets punched when a problem arises.

Other Thoughts: Some areas of my company tend to use left over hardware, some that is even from the late 90's. These guys if they drop a port won't replace a switch, they will daisy chain another switch to it. A troubleshooters nightmare. Being the guy they call when they can't figure it out what's happening, I won't even try to support their old Bay Network stuff still in production. I bought a small supply of these to hand out when they complain of problems. Once they replace their old stuff, then I will help them.

These are NOT routers despite some of the reviews. Also, since there are no fans, you can't put these is as harsh of an environment before they overheat. You need A/C! Not saying that's the problem of the other reviewers, but just something to be aware of.

2 out of 5 eggsown two, bad ports on both

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1100-16 Unmanaged 16 Port Unmanaged Gigabit Rackmount Switch

Pros: No issues with ports that work.

Cons: Some ports do not function.

Other Thoughts: Purchased two of these about a month apart. I have experienced issues with both where I plug a device into one and get no connection, then chose another port and the device works fine. Oddly, the ports that do not function on both units are on the right half. We will see how reliable the device remains overall. One purchases a device with 16 ports expecting all 16 to work, and this does not appear to be the case with this model, which is very unfortunate. No issues with the ports that work. I have not had issues with other ZyXEL products in the past.

2 out of 5 eggsGood while it lasted - close to 3 years

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1100-16 Unmanaged 16 Port Unmanaged Gigabit Rackmount Switch

Pros: This is an inexpensive, unmanaged switch - and it did fine for what it was asked to do, which was route some traffic in my home environment after my Netgear R6300 did DHCP and handled the wireless. It gave me many more ports and worked well.

Cons: Died without any warning or indication. Only thing it does now is flash the power light just a little, but zero ports. I won't buy another as I have many smaller switches that are older and have been used harder that lasted longer.

Other Thoughts: It lasted almost three years and as I am coming to see, we, the consumers, are demanding cheap and so the vendors are doing the best they can. I plan on supporting the higher quality vendors going forward to ensure they stay around and I am not left with only mass produced items such as this.

1 out of 5 eggsWorthless

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1100-16 Unmanaged 16 Port Unmanaged Gigabit Rackmount Switch

Pros: Doesn't use a wall wart, has a power switch

Cons: Doesn't work, ports are intermittent, some ports have died altogether.

Other Thoughts: This non managed switch should be plug and play. I thought zyxel was a decent brand but this is the worst switch I've ever owned. Ports will die just because and you'll rack you head around why you can't connect or why certain devices are dropping. I swapped out an older D-Link back into service and all the headaches go away. Seriously, half the ports have problems getting an IP address from my DHCP server. Not even worth 1 star
