1 out of 5 eggsThere is a reason it is so cheap...

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1100-16 Unmanaged 16 Port Unmanaged Gigabit Rackmount Switch

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: Highly unreliable. I have never had any problems with my network until I installed this switch. It is too finicky and anytime I swap something out on the network I am in for a few hours of trying to bring it back up. And this is for connections made elsewhere in the network and not directly on the switch! I am ordering a different switch to replace it as this one clearly is not reliable.

4 out of 5 eggsZyXel GS1100-16 Unmanaged Gigabit Switch - UPDATED Review

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1100-16 Unmanaged 16 Port Unmanaged Gigabit Rackmount Switch

Pros: - Inexpensive
- 16-Ports
- Dual Backplane Gigabit Speed
- Metal Housing
- Reliable

Cons: None for the Updated Design.

Other Thoughts: I was considering getting another unmanaged switch and saw this ZyXel switch on sale. I had previously written a review about this switch where I had problems with the indicator light design and the spacing between the ports.

I noticed that this is an updated model that addressed the issues I had with this switch. First, the indicator lights are in two rows that are clearly marked as to which light corresponds to which port. The position of the lights in the row seems to directly correlate to the port which the light is associated with. This makes troubleshooting very simple. An excellent improvement over the model that I have currently.

The picture of the new GS1100-16 seems to show that the top and bottom row of ports are spaced slightly farther apart. This is also a great improvement to be able to more easily change out the cables when the switch is mostly, or completely, populated.

The current ZyXel switch that I have is still functioning flawlessly. I have the switch completely populated and the traffic on the switch is heavy. This switch has never dropped connections, diminished connection speeds, or done anything except work in more than 18 months of heavy use.

If you need an unmanaged, 16-Port, Gigabit switch, I recommend this one. The updated model looks to be a distinct improvement over the previous one. I hope it is as reliable.

2 out of 5 eggsTried to save a few bucks and lost

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1100-16 Unmanaged 16 Port Unmanaged Gigabit Rackmount Switch

Pros: Cheap, easy, quiet, and fast.

Cons: After about 5 months of ownership, a couple of the switch ports in bank one started malfunctioning. Though cables were connected, the lights would go dark for a while and then come back up for very short periods of time. Another month later, all of the ports on bank one are dead. Searching around I found this is not a unique problem.

Other Thoughts: Gave two stars because 8 of the 16 ports still work which is the bare minimum I need for my primary devices. Considered warranty replacement but I'm not sure it is worth the trouble from what I've read and I can't do without the switch during the exchange process. Will be easiest just to purchase something else. Next time I will spend a few more bucks in hope of getting something a bit more reliable.

4 out of 5 eggsZyXEL GS1100-16 Unmanaged Gigabit Switch

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1100-16 Unmanaged 16 Port Unmanaged Gigabit Rackmount Switch

Pros: -16 Ports
- Reliable
- Gigabit Speeds Uplink and Downlink
- Inexpensive
- Compact

Cons: - Speed and Activity Lights are Not Directly by the Ports.
- Ports are in Double Stack so Difficult to Populate the Bottom Ports.

Other Thoughts: After more than a year of service, this ZyXEL 16-port unmanaged switch is still working fine. The ports are all working even after regularly switching out cables. The housing is metal and holds up to moderate abuse.

The only qualms I have about this switch are design features which contribute to the compact design. The first is that the speed/activity lights are all together separate from the individual ports. It is difficult to understand quickly which light is associated with which port in case of problems. Diagnosing the problem is neither quick, nor intuitive with these indicator lights stacked the way they are. Also there are no markings on either the ports, or lights to indicate what light goes with what port.

The second problem I have with this design is that the lower set of eight (8) ports is very close to the top set. This makes it difficult to populate the bottom ports if the top set of ports is already filled. It also makes it more difficult to troubleshoot cables or change out cables in a particular bottom port if surrounding ports are already populated.

These are minor design concerns that are only pertinent if you are changing cables out on ports regularly or have network difficulties which require troubleshooting on a regular basis.

In conclusion, this ZyXEL 16-port unmanaged switch is reliable, sturdy, and inexpensive. It is a very good value if you need a no-frills gigabit switch that gets the job done. I recommend it.

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1100-16 Unmanaged 16 Port Unmanaged Gigabit Rackmount Switch

Pros: Great price
Works exactly as expected
Rack mount ears included

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Bought this because the old 5 port switch i had jury rigged to my home rack had failing ports. Got this on sale for around $45 and have absolutely no complaints. Has worked great with advertised throughput since i hooked it up.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes what it needs to do

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1100-16 Unmanaged 16 Port Unmanaged Gigabit Rackmount Switch

Pros: PRICE, small size, Quiet no fan

Cons: Instructions/documentation tell you nothing. Lights do not show link speed. What exactly does the power saver ieee switch do? No light to show if the switch is on.

5 out of 5 eggsMichael D's DHCP/encryption/handshakes/etc?

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1100-16 Unmanaged 16 Port Unmanaged Gigabit Rackmount Switch

Pros: It works great.
Has been working for more than 1 year.
No problems.
Can be rack mounted with included hardware.
No fans.
Low power consumption.
Can sit on a shelf.
Has 16 ports for a very low price.
Passes gigabit traffic without any issue.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: It's an unmanaged switch. What more do you want?

Michael D's review on 6/24/2014 mentions DHCP, encryption, hand shakes, security flaws, and other things that have absolutely NOTHING to do with an UN-MANAGED switch!

This is a simple layer-2 switch. It doesn't do anything with DHCP, encryption, hand shakes (beyond those required by the hardware), security, or anything else!

Don't write a review with negative comments when you know absolutely nothing about networking.

I read one review that claimed that this switch would only pass 100 megabit traffic. That is absolutely false. Perhaps the reviewer had problems with other equipment on his network?

5 out of 5 eggs802.11az Switch

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1100-16 Unmanaged 16 Port Unmanaged Gigabit Rackmount Switch

Pros: Uses standard power cord, no "brick" to fail. Has on/off switch on back for power and 802.11az on/off switch on front. Solid construction, ears for rack mount, rubber feet and wall mount holes. Truly a versatile product.

Cons: None -The 801.11az standard it allows the network connection between connected devices to utilize "low power state" signals, saving energy by turning off unused ports, and "sleeping" when not in use for data transmission.. Both the switch and the connected device must be IEEE 802.11az compliant for this feature to work. Most of the new devices will use this protocol without issues - older devices may not support it.

Other Thoughts: In short - if you need a really well built high speed unmanaged switch that is affordable (not cheap) get this one. Enable (turn on the switch) 802.11az and enjoy about 10 to 20 percent power savings per connection over standard networking equipment.

4 out of 5 eggsBest 16 port Gigabit Switch for the money

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1100-16 Unmanaged 16 Port Unmanaged Gigabit Rackmount Switch

Pros: Time to replace my DLink 8 port switch - I ran out of ports. For the money, I hit NewEgg on sale for $49 delivered, it can not be beat. Simply plug and play. Throughput and management seem to work very well. This unit has performed flawlessly. A plus is there are not set up procedures. Simply plug in your network cables, hook up the power and you are up and running.

Cons: This is an unmanaged switch. There is no way I can see to take positive control. In most cases this is not an issue if this switch is behing your firewall, however operations are a complete mystery unless you use a sniffer to make some guesses. My DHCP is handled by my main router, so I do not know how this unit would function as a DHCP controller. Encryption / hand shakes are not definable, and given intrusion problems, I can only hope I have no problems here. While the firewall should take care of many issues, compromises on the switch part could open vulnerabilities. I have not observed any of these issues, but . . .

Other Thoughts: For $49.00, a 16 port gigabit switch can not be had for anywhere near this price. As noted there are security / control issues. Overall, so far, and excellent value.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far, so good

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1100-16 Unmanaged 16 Port Unmanaged Gigabit Rackmount Switch

Pros: 16 port gigabit for 50 bucks after coupon code.
Rackmountable
Regular UL power cable input. (no power brick required)

Cons: None to speak of, does what it should. no complaints.

Other Thoughts: Rackmountable switches are a double-edged sword if they're not rack mounted. I'll be wall mounting this switch before long to make it a little prettier.
