1 out of 5 eggsToo buggy

Pros: Easy to configure

Cons: Sometimes no possible to access it, other times 5GHz crash after few hours without reason, need to reboot often. Only 2.4GHz seems to work correctly... Too expensive for this poor quality. Even with last firmware installed v. 1.00(AAAG.7)C0

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: Looks cool

Cons: Doesn't have a stable operating system. I'm on my second unit in 3 months, constant lock ups, doesn't pass NAT (WAN to LAN) after a few hours. ZyXEL Support doesn't know why this is, can't find anything wrong with my original unit, so they are sending refund.
Maybe it can't handle high speed internet? I have 150mbps Verizon FiOS service...

Other Thoughts: Hardware specs look good, running on OpenWRT, you would think it should work, but it's junk. Don't buy this unit.

2 out of 5 eggsPoor Support, Complexity without flexibility, Overpriced for features provided

Pros: Performs the basic functions expected of a dual-band router. Decent range and throughput. Based on open source software (openWRT) and can be accessed with SSH.

Cons: - The "easy" web GUI us useless.
- The advanced web GUI has the look-and-feel of ZyXel's USG series, which will intimidatingly complex for the average home user.
- Firewall looks powerful, but can only be configured to drop packets.
- No SSL for administration page
- IPSec VPN not fully interoperable with other Zyxel routers (ZyWall USG100 & 2WG).
- Incoming TCP connections, including VPN, are set unreasonably low - 10 packets every two minutes - and are not configurable. Which means that accessing a local server or a single web page (including the router login page) by a VPN client or site, causes all traffic from that client to be dropped for five minutes.
- Some configuration (e.g. iptables) can be changed via SSH, but these changes are not persistent.
- Poor support: I contacted ZyXel about the incoming TCP connection issue on September 9. On September 10, "Ronald" replied that he would forward the issue to the engineers and get back to me. I've heard nothing more. My subsequent emails to "Ronald" have been ignored, as have my the support tickets I opened asking what has become of my request.

Other Thoughts: I have used ZyXel SOHO routers for years (Zywall 2WG, 5, USG20W, USG100) and been very satisfied. I put this one at a remote home office site. A decent home office router can be had for much less, but we paid more for the additional features of the NBG5715. Specifically, I wanted a more flexible firewall, and planned to setup IPSec VPN tunnels between the NBG5715 a 2WG and USG100 at other sites. The price, specs and GUI lead one to expect that this will be a "home router on steroids" or a low end SOHO router. But the capabilities it provides can easily be had in dual band routers costing $50-$100 less.

I've had great experience with ZyXel routers and support over the years, and I'm surprised this one fell so short. It appears to have been crippled to avoid competition with the low end of the USG series.

4 out of 5 eggsFast and Reliable

Pros: Worked right out of the box.
The "beginner/easy" setting allows ANYONE to setup this router to work.
The Form Factor is what EVERY router should be. Antenna locations and ethernet connections really are convenient.
On-Off switch for lights
Push button connection
Have not had to reset one time.

Cons: The firmware that came with the unit was out of date.
The new firmware is a big improvement, BUT still needs more refining.
The USB port connection for an external drive does not consistently work and the software you install to link to it is wonky/noisy. Cannot turn off the sound.

Other Thoughts: Wish I could set it up to connect to the hard drive connected to the USB port remotely. Maybe it can be done, but I cannot figure it out.

2 out of 5 eggs5G band issues

Pros: stable 2.4Ghz connection

Cons: 5Ghz SSID works for a while and then disappears until manual router restart. This is an expensive dual-band router, if 5G is not working then what the point?

Customer support responds relatively quickly first, but then forgets about you.

Keeping it 2 eggs because it works at least in 2.4Ghz mode.

1 out of 5 eggsRegretting my purchase

Pros: Dual band.
Respectable signal strength in my apartment.

Cons: I find myself having to reboot the router 2 to 5x a day.
It drops both WIFI and physical Network connections even when not being heavily utilized.
Features in the documentation are not available until you upgrade the firmware first.
The web interface forces you to login over and over. Just switching from one screen to another triggers the login after only a minute on.
I could not find a tech support number .
I am still waiting for a reply from technical support their initial reply to me.
I disabled the 5ghz feature and it comes back up on when it reboots... EVERYTIME.

Other Thoughts: I am really regretting this purchase.
I tried the tweaks I've done with other routers and followed suggestions on the forums to no avail.
Assuming there is not a physical issue with the router I can believe that a new firmware can make it more stable. But I am doubtful from the reading the forums. I also have not seen evidence that the company interacts with users in their forums.

I have reached out to test beta firmware. I will give Zyxel a few more days then I am going to have to request a return to New Egg at this rate. An exchange would be unacceptable as there is no evidence that this just my specific router. I hate doing returns!

What am I looking for?
1. Connections that do not drop daily.
2. A stable web menu interface.
What I encourage
1. Strong interaction with your (Zyxel's) forums.
2. A process to collect issues and recommendations from user's and a place to post what you plan to actually work on.

5 out of 5 eggsSweet Speeed

Pros: I officially jumped ship from Linksys/Cisco! This router is the bomb! I only use the wireless for laptop/cell phone/ tablet ect, and I have yet to lose any signal strength that interfers with the internet. As with any router transfering files wirelessly is a pain. The wired portion which is attached to a Zyxel 16 port gig switch, I average approximatly 90mbs! On really good days 105mbs! The bad days approximatly 60mbs. If you want a reliable router this is it! The set up was pretty straight foward but I did upgrade the firmware which did take out some of the bugs.

Cons: humm...I am just being picky now. Yes, the original firm ware had some annoying bugs like not displaying the entire menu and forceing you to reload the page to get it to display right. Changing the time zone/state just doesnt work on either firmware or is not supported. You cant permanantly turn off a radio. I dont use the 5g band. I turn it off and it stays off until the router recycles itself (Which is actually not a con) so you just have to deal with it. I have had this router which I purchased from NewEgg for approximatly 10 months and these are my only cons.

Other Thoughts: I now recommend this router to all my family and friends when asked what they should get. Its got great range. I have aluminum roofing and I still can get out of the house and get a good signal, not great but good enough that it doesnt affect my internet speed. So if you do want a change from your old router, this will not disappoint you.

1 out of 5 eggsBuggy and incomplete

Pros: Good specification - if it was true

Cons: Very buggy 1) Open security - the default password is HARD CODED! into the web login page. 2) Could not get 802.11a to work at all 3) No solid beacon very variable signal 4) comes with telnet access turned on and open. This product should not have been shipped without more testing!

Other Thoughts: We have installed and used many routers over the years, this one is a big disappointment. The telnet interface banner identifies it as another Open wrt based product.

4 out of 5 eggsZyxel NBG5715

Pros: When I took the unit out of box it felt good. Good build quality, substantial weight, etc. Setting up was a breeze.
Went on the air within an hour with both radio enabled, USB storage device attached. This router will only get better with refined f/w improvement. Definitely it is based on OpenWrt? Had to upgrade from Ubiquiti Air router due to crowding 2.4GHz band in my neighborhood. Hope it'll match the solid reliability of Ubiquiti. I am giving 4.5 eggs
now and will see.

Cons: Pricy for now.

Other Thoughts: If unpleasant things happen I will post follow up review to later. VPN feature can be better. And IPV6?
