3 out of 5 eggsIt's OK

This review is from: ZyXEL PLA4225 4-Port AV500 Powerline Gigabit Switch, Up to 500Mbps

Pros: The 4-port embedded gigabit switch is a major reason why I picked this model over other powerlines for my small PC groups. The unit sits properly on the low half of an outlet that permits the plug above it to be used. Good design, solid. Plenty of LEDs that give you an answer on its status. If you can prevent it from going to sleep/standby, a very nice product.

Cons: Not sure if others are experiencing this grief as much as I am. It's standby mode is driving me crazy. Either side could go to sleep. Waking the *OTHER* side seems to be sluggish and (almost) impossible. I've set, and verified multiple times that I've disabled the sleep/standby mode with their latest software utility. Streaming youtube will buffer, then the network stream stops - these units go into standby, and cause youtube playback to error - FREQUENTLY. I have to ping something constantly, 24/7 on the other side of the powerline to keep a stable connection. It's bitrate varies, but seems to suffer especially when standby is being activated on either side

Other Thoughts: For the cost and time, I don't want the headache of an RMA. For the frustrating experience, I do want an RMA. These frustrate me greatly. This is the second ZyXEL device I've had the chance to work with. And both devices had some flaw. I'm no fan of ZyXEL and probably won't buy another..ever again.

5 out of 5 eggsbetter then the rest i tried

This review is from: ZyXEL PLA4225 4-Port AV500 Powerline Gigabit Switch, Up to 500Mbps

Pros: fast and stable

Cons: not 500mbps, non of them are

Other Thoughts: well out of the 4 I have used this one is by farrrrr the BEST.

the other 3 brands I have well one couldn't do 20mbps then the other one did 80mbps but would drop connections daily.the Linksys was the only one to come close to this one yet still only 1/3 and would jump around on its speeds but at least it stayed connected. this one tested on average 175mbps +- 20mbps and stable so stable I using with 4 HD IP internet cameras 24 hours a day 7 days a week and have not lost connection at all and the distance about 500 feet, new wiring 20amp so its new and thicker wire then normal 15amp house hold wire. yet the others did terrible in the same place

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great. Better than WiFi.

This review is from: ZyXEL PLA4225 4-Port AV500 Powerline Gigabit Switch, Up to 500Mbps

Pros: You plug these in and go. They work right away. Unlike WiFi, they require no setup. To enable encryption, just press the encrypt button on one of the units and do the same with the other unit within 2 minutes. Nearly foolproof. Speeds are much better than WiFi and signal is more stable. For a 100Mb/s LAN, expect to see at least 50Mb/s across the adapters. I was also able to set up a network connection with my neighbor's apartment in the same building -- I think we are on the same electrical main. The plugs are two-blade plugs so you can plug them in upside down or right side up, which at times can be convenient, and they don't block the second plug on a wall socket. This 500Mb/s adapter does seem to work faster than the earlier 200Mb/s AV spec adapters. ZyXel makes high quality network gear and support online and by phone is excellent. I have had good luck with their wired firewall and WiFi routers as well.

Cons: These adapters will work through a surge protector, but I noticed that the performance is greatly diminished. For best results, you need plug them directly into the wall socket and you may want to avoid having them plugged into the same socket as a motor driven device or fluorescent lamp - anything that will generate RF. You will need to experiment to see which wall outlets work best.

Other Thoughts: Powerline is the way to go if you want to connect over long distances or on different floors, or don't want to mess with setting up and securing a WiFi connection. Powerline is also the way to go if you want to stream video to your TV and don't have a hard wire Ethernet connection. You will get much better performance compared to WiFi and a more stable connection.

5 out of 5 eggsWorking great!!!

This review is from: ZyXEL PLA4225 4-Port AV500 Powerline Gigabit Switch, Up to 500Mbps

Pros: No muss, no fuss install... Just plug them in. I'm getting great transfer rates even with the units plugged into power strips which they expressly say NOT to do. About to buy more!!!

Cons: None that I've experienced...

3 out of 5 eggsIntermittently Working

This review is from: ZyXEL PLA4225 4-Port AV500 Powerline Gigabit Switch, Up to 500Mbps

Pros: Compact
Has 4 ethernet ports
Simple to setup

Cons: Works intermittently - even if connected in same room on same circuit. I could not get the connection to stay stable even in the same room on 2 plugs.

Rates across breaker room to room were under 100Mbps both directions.

There is no RESET instructions for this thing. Neither in the manual nor on-line. There is a reset button, but no instructions as to how long to hold it, when to hold it, etc.

Turning encryption is a one button push, however in my tests if you unplug and then re plug the one of the plugs it can't connect back up. So I ended up taking encryption off.

Other Thoughts: Tests done in a 6 year old house with both inroom and room to room setups.

All said and done 802.11n 5GHz gives me faster speeds for streaming.
