1 out of 5 eggsThroughput just isn't there

This review is from: ZyXEL Powerline AV 500 Mbps 4 Port Gigabit Switch Wall-plug Adapter with PLA4205 Powerline AV 500Mbps (PLA4225KIT)

Pros: Connects Ethernet at 1Gbps. 4 port-kit connects several devices

Cons: Throughput is only max of 10Mbps after attempts in several configurations. Had it reached near 100Mbps, I would not have been too dissatisfied.

Other Thoughts: Emergency use only. Maybe if connection is cut and all you have is power connecting the areas of a building.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat while it lasted...

This review is from: ZyXEL Powerline AV 500 Mbps 4 Port Gigabit Switch Wall-plug Adapter with PLA4205 Powerline AV 500Mbps (PLA4225KIT)

Pros: This thing was sweet when I got it, plug and play and SO much better than wireless......

Cons: ...However it was purchased in September 2013, It is now 4-3-2014 and as of last night it is junk. It went down to about a 2 mbps download speed for about an hour (upload was still about 5 mbps). I tried resetting modem, router, this thing. tried different cables, different ports, etc... Now it wont do anything and I am stuck buying another one (or a different one) and left without internet upstairs in the meantime.

Other Thoughts: Nice if it lasted longer...

3 out of 5 eggsSo So

This review is from: ZyXEL Powerline AV 500 Mbps 4 Port Gigabit Switch Wall-plug Adapter with PLA4205 Powerline AV 500Mbps (PLA4225KIT)

Pros: It was easy hook up

Cons: You have to be on same circuit for best results and Constantly dropping connection even when on same breaker circuit. Price too high for product that works part time.

2 out of 5 eggsTerrible Throughput

This review is from: ZyXEL Powerline AV 500 Mbps 4 Port Gigabit Switch Wall-plug Adapter with PLA4205 Powerline AV 500Mbps (PLA4225KIT)

Pros: Relatively quick, easy setup. Convenient as long as network speed and throughput aren't a concern.

Cons: Throughput is a joke. You have to have perfect wiring on the same circuit for speed to be anywhere close to reasonable. Tried every outlet in my house. For me, my adapters start off with a green LED that keeps degrading to red over a couple of days. Actual network speed is slower than my draft wireless N speeds--getting 5 Mbytes/sec (not Mbits) transfer over wireless N. Powerline starts at around 4 MBytes/s and degrades to about 1.

Other Thoughts: Barely could stream Hd content with wireless, since it was inconsistent. Now I can't do it at all. If I plug in a vacuum cleaner, it completely loses connection. I have to reconnect every time. This may be acceptable to some, but it is an absolute non-starter for me.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

This review is from: ZyXEL Powerline AV 500 Mbps 4 Port Gigabit Switch Wall-plug Adapter with PLA4205 Powerline AV 500Mbps (PLA4225KIT)

Pros: Love it!! So much better than wifi or drilling holes and running cords! The modem, and router are on the bottom floor of the house. my room is on the second floor and at the opposite end of the house and it works great. I even have a wifi router plugged into it in my room and although it messes up if you plug an ethernet cable in the wifi router, the actual wifi works great and it leaves 3 other ports. i have 2 plugged into desktop computers and 1 to the xbox 360 and i always have a laptop on the wireless and it is all working great. (not to mention the computer downstairs.)

Cons: none

4 out of 5 eggsConnected Outlets

This review is from: ZyXEL Powerline AV 500 Mbps 4 Port Gigabit Switch Wall-plug Adapter with PLA4205 Powerline AV 500Mbps (PLA4225KIT)

Pros: They work out of the box and will interoperate with the older 200mbit units.

Cons: Though they are faster than the older 200mbit units, they still don't work at 100% speed in my house. Unshielded motors will interrupt transmissions. My paper shredder will stop all activity until it is shut off. This is why I've deducted an egg.

Other Thoughts: Both units are on different circuit breakers and as far away from the breaker box as possible and still inside the house. HD video on a Windows Media Extender will jitter and pause from time to time. I have had no luck getting one to work in my detached garage which is off of the same feed and powered from the house breaker box. On the same circuit and closer to the breaker box, they will run full speed. These are much better than WiFi but not as good as a CAT6 cable from a gigabit switch. They have saved me from having to run cables for 7 years but as bandwidth demands rise, I'm going to have to pull a cable between floors and that's going to suck. Still good for the remote printer and anything that just browses the net. Even backups work better than WiFI with these.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Devices

This review is from: ZyXEL Powerline AV 500 Mbps 4 Port Gigabit Switch Wall-plug Adapter with PLA4205 Powerline AV 500Mbps (PLA4225KIT)

Pros: Sable connection.
Green, energy saving.
4-port giga switch.

Cons: No where close to 500Mbps.

Other Thoughts: Purchased this kit, along with the 4205 kit for a total of 4 devices (one with 4 ports). The devices are plug-and-play, totally unmanaged. No software was used.

This set is used to replace the unreliable wireless networking. I never get good n connection with the D-Link router.

With this set, I can connect up to 6 devices to the network. This is plenty.

The speed is ok. I do not know how and who can get the 500 mbps speed. But it is more stable and definitely faster than the wireless.

This is my first set of powerline, so no comparison.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes Good IF!

This review is from: ZyXEL Powerline AV 500 Mbps 4 Port Gigabit Switch Wall-plug Adapter with PLA4205 Powerline AV 500Mbps (PLA4225KIT)

Pros: WORKS

Cons: Software and manuals

Other Thoughts: Forget the manual! Forget the software (OK to use to 'look at and see', but not for setting up a secure system.

I needed to mount 2 security cameras in my detached garage, and figured these would be easier then running RJ45 cables. Ordered the PLA4201KIT, and got one working, with some extra reading and playing with the software, then ordered the 2nd set for another camera. Here the problems started. Should be a simple mater (according to the manual and quick install sheet) to 'add' an adapter. Finally got both working (had to -re-do the first!!), took to the garage, plugged in. Cameras had a very low frame and bit rate, and kept dropping off line (not good for security cameras). Software is very frustrating, and manuals even more-so!

After reading more, decided to take a chance and ordered the PLA4225KIT with the 4 outlet remote. Had to run a 50' Cat 5 line for 2nd camera, but no problem there. Decide to take advise from previous review, and plugged the first in with the cable to the router, and let it find it. You don't NEED the software for this, just watch the lights. But I used the software to WATCH as already installed, but did NOTHING IN the program. Once it is found, plug the remote (with NO RJ 45 cable connected) into the SAME outlet, and wait for the green light to come on and stay on. Because these are large, used and 3' cheap extension cord for the remote to establish the connection. Once connection is made, un-plug and move to where-ever you are going to connect it, and install.

Will most likely add one of my PLA4201 adapters to this, but same method. Leaving me 3 that maybe I can unload on someone else.

I would like to make my system more secure, but I live in the country, and don't think I will have a problem. BUT the point is, I'm afraid to try with the software, as I don't want to keep playing with these things. These have a encryption button, but afraid to use it after the problems with the others, an thinking if I add one more, more problems! The manufactures need to learn the old 'KISS' still applies! KEEP IT SIMPLE!

5 out of 5 eggsSo helpful

This review is from: ZyXEL Powerline AV 500 Mbps 4 Port Gigabit Switch Wall-plug Adapter with PLA4205 Powerline AV 500Mbps (PLA4225KIT)

Pros: These work great. I always have problems with my wireless reception on my computer (perhaps it's the settings), but having the hardline is so much better. It's fast, reliable, and never cuts out. Setup is simple; plug and play.

Cons: Nothing.

5 out of 5 eggsupdate

This review is from: ZyXEL Powerline AV 500 Mbps 4 Port Gigabit Switch Wall-plug Adapter with PLA4205 Powerline AV 500Mbps (PLA4225KIT)

Pros: fast and stable, just make sure to use the software to set it up

Cons: noda

Other Thoughts: I forgot to add in my review update that the second time I tried it after it failed the first time I used the setup software to set it up and it has been completely stable since.

yes they are plug and play , plug them in and they work but for some reason using the setup software makes them completely stable
